Peach season!Message from Bernadette Wulf

Greetings,

I hope you are enjoying the height of summer as much as I am. We are having a little heat wave and I love it!

Though my garden keeps calling me out to water and weed, I find myself back at the computer more often than not… and I’m having lots of fun writing and creating graphics.

House of Mirrors coverMaybe you missed my last email where I shared a link to download a review copy of my novel, House of Mirrors. I’d love for you to read it and give me your feedback, or write a review on Amazon when I get it posted there. Here’s where you can get your PDF copy.

I also announced a free one hour graphic design consultation to clarify your branding if you have a business — for your websites, marketing, logos, social media posts. Here’s my calendar link if you’d like to make an appointment. And here’s a link to more info. about my graphic design services.

I don’t have any workshops planned for the near future, but you never know. Sometimes those faeries start bugging me to offer one and it comes together quickly. Of course I’ll keep you in the loop.

For this month, I wanted to honor Dr. McDougall for the wonderful work he shared with us. I learned so much from him and was really sad to hear that he is no longer with us.

We also have some interesting articles on how to prevent strokes, relieve headaches and avoid the dangers of resveratrol. Once again, whole plant foods come to the rescue!

To your health and happiness!

Tribute to Dr. McDougall - free to share
(Feel free to share this graphic I created)

Though I never met Dr. McDougall in person, we lived in the same town for a long time. I had been aware of him for decades before I really understood what a gift he was to the world —not just to Santa Rosa, CA., but to everyone on the planet who wants to heal with diet rather than drugs and surgery.

Here in Sonoma County, he left his legacy of McDougall menus in many of our Mexican and Asian restaurants, featuring low-fat vegan whole foods. I can walk right down the street and order a McDougall burrito at our local Mexican restaurant!

His comprehensive knowledge and his ability to share it amazed me every time I listened to him, and I listened often, including a few days before he passed on. He could quote reams of scientific evidence off the top of his head and he had the clinical experience to back up his claims, which seemed extreme to some people.

Bottom line, it worked. His teachings and in-person clinics healed thousands of people from all sorts of life-threatening diseases.

He was able to keep himself healthy for six decades after suffering a massive stroke as a teenager that left him partially paralyzed. That is what propelled him into a life of healing, until he died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 77.

That seems pretty young to me, since I’m not that far behind, but apparently the stroke did a lot of damage that was never fully healed… and, it has been suggested by some that a certain round of injections a couple of years ago may have compromised his health even more, but I’ll leave you to your own conclusions about that.

His death was unexpected, which I think makes it all the harder to accept for those left behind. My condolences to his family and loved ones and to all of you who only knew him from a distance, but will miss him none the less. The world will not be the same without him.

Tylenol affects brain functionPreventing Strokes

Speaking of strokes, what can we do to prevent them?

Here’s what naturalhealth365.com has to say:

Based on the medical literature, we know that you can reduce the threat of thrombosis by consuming a healthy diet – loaded with antioxidants – and consuming high-quality, superfood supplements on a daily basis.  The problem here is an out-of-date, chemical mindset of conventionally-trained physicians.  They have a fantastic opportunity to teach patients about the value of good nutrition on health.  But they [most of them — ed.] don’t!

Once again, a low-fat, whole plant foods diet wins the race in preventing strokes. The article includes a list of foods and supplements that may be most helpful: olive, pomegranate, garlic, tea, quercetin, tomatoes, resveratrol [<<<wait a minute! Click the link to read what Dr. Greger has to say about that one. — ed.], grape seed extract, capsaicinoids, ginger, and curcumin.

The list also includes fish oil, but I hope you know better than to consume that. An algae-based Omega fatty acid supplement is a much safer alternative, now that fish have become so toxic with plastic, mercury and agricultural chemicals.

And sorry, but downing a glass of red wine every day for the resveratrol is really not doing yourself any favors. See the last article below for more info. about that.

Fat on the brain?Headache Relief

I suppose we have all had headaches from time to time, but for some people they can interfere with work, play and enjoyment of life way too often. Apparently, the foods we eat can make a big difference in the severity and frequency of headaches.

From nutritionfacts.org:

In terms of dietary treatments, the so-called Father of Modern Medicine, William Osler suggested trying a “strict vegetable diet.” After all, the nerve inflammation associated with migraines “may be reduced by a vegan diet as many plant foods are high in anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants, and likewise, meat products have been reported to have inflammatory properties.” It wasn’t put to the test, though, for another 117 years.

Now that plant-based diets have finally been put to the test, the results support Osler’s theory: “when put on a strictly plant-based diet, they did much better, experiencing a significant drop in the severity of their pain.”

One of the big factors seems to be saturated fats. Of course, that comes from animal products, plus a very few plant foods like coconut and palm oil.

Dr. Greger on ResveratrolWine-Not?

Resveratrol & Brain Shrinkage!!!

Still think drinking red wine is good for you? Think again.

Here’s an eye-opening video from Dr. Greger at NutritionFacts.org.

The tagline is: Resveratrol appears to triple the rate of age-related brain shrinkage.

Wow! And they told us it was so healthy.
