Beltaine/May Day Greetings!

It’s time to celebrate summer in the Celtic calendar, and the seasons are definitely shifting. The hummingbirds are back in my neighborhood and looking for healthy snacks. Encourage them to stick around by planting organic flowers and providing do-it-yourself nectar made with the recipe below.

We are focusing on purity this month. Learning how to choose pure foods and cleaning supplies, and avoiding contaminants, is becoming more and more important. Unethical companies spread toxins right and left, while others tell outright lies about what they are selling. “Let the buyer beware” seems more appropriate than ever. Fortunately, we have companies like the Environmental Working Group to help us avoid the worst products and find the good ones.

There has been a lot of buzz about Glyphosate (aka RoundUp) in the news lately. Seems like the stuff is everywhere now, and people are still spraying it with abandon. Science is finally letting us know how toxic it is, but a little too late. It is already in so much of our food, water, and wine. Thanks a lot, Monsanto – we really needed another toxin to worry about!

The good news is that we – you and I – have the power to change all this. You may not feel very powerful. I know I don’t sometimes. But when we join forces we can make a big difference. Look at how many countries have banned GMOs already, and we are on the verge of mandatory labeling in the U.S., all because of consumer pressure.

We can do this! Get informed. Spread the word. Shop consciously. We are creating the future. Let’s do it together for the health of ourselves and future generations of every form of life on our planet.

To your health and happiness!

It’s Time to Ban RoundUp!

Glyphosate, is creeping into our food supply and into our bodies due to rampant use of RoundUp. From naturalmentor.com: “And it’s everywhere. Packaged food products are just the beginning—just proof of how deeply it has penetrated the food chain. A U.S. Geological Survey found glyphosate in 59% of sampled water sites, 50% of soil and sediment samples, 8.4% of groundwater samples, and even 10% of water that had already undergone treatment at wastewater treatment plants. Glyphosate has even been detected in woman’s breast milk and urine.”

The state of California has just declared Glyphosate a carcinogen. This cancer-causing chemical is seeping into our water and food, especially non-organic foods! It was found in 100% of Sonoma County wines tested, even (though much less) in organic wine. Yet we are still allowing farmers and home owners to spray this stuff wherever they choose.

We are making good progress around the world on banning GMOs, or at least labeling them. Now it’s time to tackle RoundUp. Will you help to spread the word? We can do this!

Glyphosate Contamination Discovered in Popular Packaged Foods

Because of all these toxins in our environment, everyone needs to include lots of detoxifying foods in their diet, like fruits (especially berries), cilantro, Hawaiian Spirulina, Atlantic dulse (see my April newsletter for the Medical Medium detox formula), dandelion root, milk thistle, turmeric, and leafy greens. Over the last 75 years we have probably dumped more toxic chemicals and heavy metals into our environment than in the rest of history combined. Now we are finally waking up to realize that we ARE our environment. What we do to our planet, we do to ourselves and our children.

As consumers, we have the power to shape the market place if we just take time to think about the repercussions of our purchases.

  • Where did it come from?
  • How was it grown or produced?
  • What harm could it do after we are finished with it?

Making our buying choices based on the answers to those three questions can make the difference between living in a toxic, polluted world, or the paradise we would all love to experience. The choice is up to each of us every time we pull out our wallet.

I was delighted to find this recipe. I love watching hummingbirds and would like to set up multiple feeders, but the cost of keeping them filled with a good quality commercial food can be expensive. Plus, some foods have added red dye that can be harmful to the birds.

Why not make the nectar? Make sure to use white cane sugar, ideally organic white cane sugar. Beet sugar is GMO and NOT good for birds, or anyone else! (And who wants to support Monsanto by buying their products, anyway?) Though white sugar is not good for us, it provides the birds with the fuel they need for their busy lives and apparently does them no harm – though I’m sure flowers are better!

Here’s the recipe straight from the Audubon.org website:

Materials:

• 1/4 cup refined white sugar

• 1 cup boiling water

• Bowl

• Spoon

Note: There’s no need for red dye here. Red coloring is not necessary and the chemicals could prove to be harmful to the birds.

Steps:

1. Mix sugar and boiling water until sugar is dissolved.

2. Cool and fill feeder.

3. Hang up your feeder outside and wait for the hummingbirds to come.

Pretty simple and sanctioned by the Audubon Society, so you know it’s good for the hummers.

Is Your Olive Oil Pure? – Simple Test

You may have seen one of the many articles about all the fake olive oil that is being sold as virgin and extra virgin olive oil. I found that disturbing, but once I saw this I thought, DUH! Why didn’t I think of that? Olive oil solidifies in the refrigerator. Vegetable oils do not. Simple!

EWG (Environmental Working Group) has posted a new list of the best and safest cleaning products available. Every product we use for cleaning ends up in our water, air, or soil, and of course our bodies, so it makes sense to choose non-toxic and biodegradable products. Right? Of course!

EWG has made it easy for us to choose the best without having to get a degree in chemistry.
