Message
from Bernadette Wulf
Greetings!
If
you feel like you have been on a roller coaster ride lately, you are
not alone. Between the crazy weather patterns, eclipses, and world
turmoil, it is sometimes hard to simply relax and enjoy the moment. Big
changes are in the works and that can feel like a lot of pressure
sometimes, at least it feels that way to me.
Fortunately, I do not live in one of the places experiencing the worst
of the turmoil. Not even close. So I'm taking a moment right now to
count my blessings and send a little love and light to those who are
not so well off. If we are all connected (and we are) a kind thought
can travel across the web of life to uplift someone we don't even know.
Can I prove it? No, but I don't have to. It is just something that
feels right to me. Maybe you would like to try it too. I know one
thing, It makes me feel a lot better.
So go out and enjoy the May flowers. They are amazingly abundant where
I live right now, popping up in the lawn and blossoming everywhere I
look. In the Celtic calendar May Day is the first day of Summer. I like
that.
This month we have a little motivation to eat more beans, and not
because "America needs the gas!" as the bumper stickers joke. Beans are
actually a very healthy food. So is coconut oil, which is the subject
of the next article. Then we have a couple of articles on skin care
products that will probably appeal to the ladies, though you men would
do well to read the last article on toxic ingredients to avoid. And
that wraps it up for May.
Have a wonderful beginning of Summer!
To
Your
Health!

Eat Beans for Your Heart
If
you are looking for the kind of fiber that makes your heart sing, i.e.
the kind the lowers LDL cholesterol, put beans and lentils at the top
of your list. LDL is the kind of cholesterol that can lead to heart
attacks, so the lower the better. Fortunately, beans are delicious and
versatile additions to many ethnic dishes. They are high in soluble
fiber, which makes them one of the best foods for clearing that nasty
cholesterol our of your arteries.
From Care2.com - "The
research group analyzed 26 randomized clinical trials involving over
1000 volunteers of various ages, with an average age of 51. They
concluded that eating 4.5 ounces of cooked legumes daily – the
equivalent of three-quarters of a cup – lowered LDL cholesterol by five
percent. This translates into an equivalent percentage reduction
in heart attacks or other cardiovascular events, according to the
researchers."
Here are some great beans to add fiber (in grams per cup of cooked beans) to your meals:
Navy beans (19 grams)
Small White beans (19 grams)
Yellow beans (18 grams)
Adzuki beans (17 grams)
Black turtle beans (17 grams)
French beans (17 grams)
Lentils (16 grams)
Kidney beans (16 grams)
Pinto beans (15 grams)
Mung beans (15 grams)
Lima beans (14 grams)
Chickpeas (12 grams) Read More About Health Benefits of Beans

Coconut Oil to the Rescue!
If
you have digestive issues, allergies, brain fog, unexplained aches and
pains, digestive problems, or chronic fatigue, you may have Candida
overgrowth and/or a bacterial infection. Candida is a natural yeast
that lives in the human digestive tract, however it often gets out of
control due to overconsumption of sugars and refined flour products.
The same is true of bacteria. Unfortunately, the usual medical
treatment involves toxic treatments like triclosan and antibiotics, but
there is a better alternative.
From
body Ecology.com: "The coconut oil was then tested against harmful
strains of bacteria. They found that coconut oil treated with
enzymes—mimicking the digestion of coconut oil—blocked the growth of
unwanted bacteria.
"That’s not all. They also found that enzyme-treated coconut oil
disrupted the growth of Candida yeast—the same yeast behind thrush,
yeast infections, and leaky gut."
Coconut oil, when digested properly, has anti-microbial and anti-Candida
properties. It is also one of the best oils to cook with, due to the
fact that it is not easily damaged by heat. If you have trouble
digesting fats, you may want to take the fat-digesting enzyme, lipase whenever you eat oils and other fats.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to support your liver with lots of leafy
greens, occasional milk thistle supplements, and bitter foods like
dandelion greens, as well.
One
added bonus of coconut oil is that it can actually help you lose
weight. It makes a pretty good coffee creamer, too - if you don't mind
coconut flavored coffee!

Top 9 Mineral Makeup Foundations
Have
you ever wondered if mineral
foundations are really as pure as their marketing suggests? The term
"mineral" can be used on any
product that is predominantly made of minerals, like mica, zinc oxide,
and titanium
dioxide, regardless of other
additives, like fragrance, dye, and preservatives. Some of them even
have nano particles, which I believe are very dangerous, because they
are so small they can cross the blood-brain barrier.
Environmental Working Group has rated many products that we use
everyday, from household cleaners to mineral make up. It is a great
organization that is doing a lot to pressure companies to provide pure
and safe products. The EWG score you see after most of these
Foundations is their safety rating.
I originally found the following list of mineral foundations on a
Martha Stewart blog page, but I can no longer find it, so I cannot post
a link. Still, it is a good list, and I thank Martha and her team for
doing the research and making the list available. Here are the brands
they found to be safest, along with a few helpful comments on their
quality:
* Alima Pure Satin Matte Foundation - goes on super light and blends easily, imparting even skin tone
and covering minor imperfections with an extra flick of the brush.
($22 for 7.5 g, EWG score 1 out of 10 - low hazard)
* Korres Mineral Foundation Wild Rose Talc-Free
Brightening Foundation SPF 30 -This powder gives you a subtle
"candlelight glow" rather than a matte finish. It feels light but stays put all
day. ($28 for 8.5 g, No EWG
score)
* Elegant Minerals Mineral Foundation SPF 15 - No-frills brand, very impressive, giving a photo finish that
lasts all day. ($9.50 for 10 g, EWG score 1 out of 10 - low
hazard)
* Youngblood Natural Mineral Foundation - If other
mineral formulas are too sheer for your needs, this one will not
disappoint. It has more pigment for greater coverage, yet still blends
easily for a natural look. ($42 for 10 g, No EWG
score)
* Faerie Organic Mineral Foundation [I love this one just for the name! - Ed.] - Very sheer, this
powder still gives a long lasting matte finish. ($18 for 30 g, EWG score 3 out of 10 - low
hazard)
* Rejuva Minerals Mineral Foundation - This 100%
natural and non-toxic powder gives you a warm, natural tone and
blends very well. ($29.95 for 10 g, EWG score 0 out of 10 - no hazard)
* Afterglo Cosmetics Organic Mineral Foundation - In
addition to being all natural, this formula is infused with organic
botanicals. [I've tried this one and frankly, I thought it looked a bit
dull, but if you are trying to minimize shine it would be great. - Ed.]
($32 for 10 g, EWG score 2 out of 10
- low hazard)
* Terra Firma Hydrasilk Mineral Foundation with Silk -
Terra Firma pitches this makeup as offering buildable coverage and it
delivers, letting you stop at a light veil or brush on seamless layers
of even, matte color - a great price for the quality.
($24.99 for 50 g, EWG score 2 out of 10 - low hazard)
* Zosimos Botanicals Mineral Foundation - Loads of
color options and light, long lasting, sheer
coverage. ($30 for 30 g, EWG score 2 out of 10 - low hazard)

5 Red Flag Ingredients in Skin Care Products
If you’re using skin care with these ingredients, you may be creating wrinkles and aging your skin much faster than is natural!
From Rawfor30days.com:
1. Sulfates: Harsh, corrosive, and drying ingredients you’ll
find in cleansers, body washes, shampoos, and even in
toothpastes. They cause skin irritation and corrosion, and over time, lead to
increased dryness. In fact, studies have indicated that sulfates
can age the skin. Avoid “sodium laureth sulfate” and “sodium lauryl
sulfate.”
2. Certain alcohols: Look at one of your anti-aging skin products and
you may find ingredients like “SD alcohol, ethanol, methanol, benzyl
alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol.” These are all drying
ingredients that strip away skin’s natural oils and lead to premature
aging and irritation.
3. DEA, MEA, TEA: In addition to potential links to cancer, these ingredients are
drying to the skin and hair. They can also cause allergic reactions,
resulting in redness and inflammation.
4. Mineral oil: It comes from petroleum, and it forms a sort of film
over the skin, clogging pores and hindering the skin’s natural ability
to get rid of toxins. The result is an aging effect that
can make fine lines and wrinkles much more visible.
5. Chemical sunscreens: Many so-called chemical sunscreens like
oxybenzone, benzophenone-3, and octyl methoxycinnamate can actually
encourage free radical damage when exposed to sunrays.
I know it is not easy to find skin care products without these
ingredients, even in natural food stores. The reason I know is because
I once worked in the body care section of a natural food store chain.
When there were no customers, I read labels! That was a very
enlightening experience. I encourage you to read labels too and avoid
any products with these ingredients. You may have to spend a bit more
for the good stuff, but can save yourself and your skin from absorbing
a lot of toxins that way.
