Earth News
Earth has a message for us. Can you hear
it?
In the image above, it looks like there is a great abundance of water
on our planet, but take a look at the image below. It tells a very
different story.
Relative
to the size of Earth, water is only a thin layer that could be
contained in that little blue bubble. That sure gives me a greater
appreciation for our oceans, rivers, and tap water. What a precious
gift water is!
Click on the photo to see images of the even smaller bubble that
represents our fresh watter supply. I hope this image goes viral and
inspires people all over the world to treat water with much more care
and respect.

Butterflies
are back! It must be spring - and along with spring many people start
suffering with allergies. Read on for some great tips to help with
relief. Then check out the 8 foods that help to fight cancer. Many of
them are delicious, like hemp seeds, garlic, broccoli, onions,
mushrooms, sea weeds, and curry (turmeric). Eat 'em everyday!
We also have a couple of great videos on how dogs can help protect our
health, and how our words create "spells" that can trap us in patterns
we don't really like. And last but not least, some handy recycling tips
that may surprise you.
I hope the growing light of Spring fills your days with new life and growth.
If you are like
40 million other Americans, you may have come to dread the arrival of
Spring with the high pollen counts that get you sneezing and rubbing
your itchy eyes. I know how it feels. I've been there many times, but
the good news is that there are lots of solutions to help you cope.
Here are 20 tips from Care2.com by Melissa
Breyer: [I have edited to save space - link to entire article at end of
this section - Ed.]
1. Sign up for Allergy Alert email to find out what to expect in
your ZIP code for the next two days.
2. Know your enemy - Most pollen counts are the highest between 5 a.m.
and 10 a.m.
3. Remember the quirky pollens - example: birch offers up its
irritating pollen between noon and 6 pm.
4. Cloudy days encourage a buildup of pollen in flowers, which leads to
an exuberant release of pollen as soon as the sun returns.
5. Hit the beach; head for hills! The seashore and mountain peaks and
ridges are generally low in pollen. [I have definitely found this to be
true - Ed.]
6. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollen. For those with no
shame, wear goggles.
7. Cover your mouth and nose. Face masks that prevent pollen from
entering your mouth and nose can make a big difference - a scarf will
also offer some protection.
8. Adding a smudge of Vaseline just inside your nostrils (and breathing
only through your nose) will help trap much of the pollen. As soon as
you’re indoors, carefully wipe it away and rinse.
9. Elect not to mow the lawn if you have the option.
10. Keep your home pollen-free by following the tips below:
11. Do not throw open the windows - it will only invite more pollen in.
If it’s hot out, use an air conditioner that recirculates air.
12. Pollen will settle to the floor inside – some in as little as four
minutes – but only as long as the air is still. With this in mind, keep
fans off and rambunctious pets at bay.
13. Consider using a high-quality air filter. Also daily wet dusting
and/or vacuuming with a double bag or HEPA filter will help a lot.
14. Don‘t line-dry your laundry. We love line-dried clothes; so does
pollen.
15. Pollen and pet fur go together like magnets and steel. After your
animals have been outside, don’t pet them or let them back in until
someone has wiped them down or brushed them.
16. Change your pollen-dusted clothes as soon as you get home; keep
some pollen-free clothes on hand for indoor use only.
17. After longer periods outside or after activities during high pollen
days, shower and shampoo as soon as you get home; if that’s not
feasible, shower before you go to sleep to keep pollen off your
bedding. Also, always wash your face and hands as soon as you get
inside.
18. Keep your pollen-caked shoes outside; or at the very least, wipe
them well on an outdoor mat.
19. Combat symptoms with home remedies:
- A neti pot or saline nasal spray can help rinse
and soothe sinuses.
- Local honey for allergies has been debated; many
still swear by it.
- Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple, can ease
sinus inflammation.
- Spirulina, eyebright, and goldenseal supplements
are helpful for some people.
- A few drops of eucalyptus essential oil in the bottom of
the shower can clear sinuses.
- Make a mug of hot peppermint tea; before drinking,
breathe the minty steam, which can work as a mild decongestant and
expectorant.
20. If you remain miserable and nothing else works, the newer
over-the-counter drugs do not induce the same states of zombie-like
stupor that older antihistamines did. Talk to your doctor about the
gentlest pharmaceuticals; even if you don’t like taking medications,
there may be some solace in knowing that relief exists.
Editor's note: I would also add that homeopathty,
acupuncture, and Chinese herbs
have been used
successfully to relieve allergies at the causal level. Personally, I
would try any or all of these before taking pharmaceutical drugs of any kind.
Cancer is
running rampant in our modern world and we are now exposed to so many
toxins that we can't just expect to avoid it without taking some
steps to protect ourselves. Here are some great suggestions for
cancer-fighting foods to include in your diet. Fortunately, fighting
cancer can even taste good. Imagine a broccoli, shitake mushroom curry
with lots of garlic!
From NaturalNews.com - "With 44% of men and 39% of women now being
diagnosed with cancer, it has become more important than ever to
understand the foods that will not only nourish your body, but also
detoxify it of any cancer causing agents. Here are some of the most
potent cancer destroying foods and herbs [Edited to save space]:"
Sea Vegetables -
Kelp, kombu, and nori are three of the more common sea vegetables with
remarkable effects on cancer.
Algae - Chlorella
and spirulina are two of the most potent algae and are proven cancer
fighters. Due to their incredible detoxification action (including
binding to and eliminating heavy metals) and immune boosting properties
(by promoting production of healthy gut flora and fighting candida
overgrowth), they are a must have when healing cancer.
Cruciferous Vegetables -
broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage have been linked to lower cancer
risks and have the ability to halt growth of cancer cells for tumors in
the breast, uterine lining, lung, colon, liver, and cervix.
Medicinal Mushrooms -
reishi and chaga have had a number of bioactive molecules, including
anti-tumor agents, identified in their structure. Studies show that
long-term consumption of reishi prevents tumor proliferation and growth
by increasing the level of antioxidants in an individual's blood plasma
while boosting the immunity of those suffering from advanced stage
cancer.
Aloe Vera -
Research shows strong immunomodulatory and anti-tumor properties for
polysaccharides in aloe vera, which means it boosts immune system
function and destroys cancer tumors.
Hemp contains some
of the most balanced and richest sources of oils on the planet, with an
ideal ratio of 3:1 for omega 6 to omega 3. Hemp seed oil also contains
80% essential fatty acids, the highest of any plant. The superb EFA
content in hemp makes it a great option for healing cancer.
Garlic - A double
blind, randomized study with over 3000 human subjects for seven
clinical years showed that cancer risk was cut by 60% for those with
the highest intake of allium containing vegetables, including aged
garlic. The key is to crush it and let it sit for 15 minutes in order
to release the anti-cancer compounds. [Onions are also
alliums - Ed.]
Turmeric - The Life
Extension Foundation has conducted extensive research into the
anti-cancer properties of turmeric and found that it targets 10
causative factors involved in cancer development, including DNA damage,
chronic inflammation, and disruption of cell signaling pathways.
Hundreds of studies have also shown that curcumin is a potent
anti-cancer food that blocks cancer development in a number of unique
ways.
Many
of us like having dogs around just because they are loving,
entertaining, and endlessly generous companions, but dogs can be so
much more. In addition to adding years to our lives (statistically) and
relieving our stress, they can help us stay healthy in other ways.
Because of their amazing sense of smell and ability to read us on many
other levels, they can act in a medical alert capacity. Dogs can smell
out disease, from cancers to blood sugar changes, in time for us to
take action to heal ourselves.
I thought I was a pro at recycling. After all, I've been doing it since
the 60s, but I learned a few things from this Care2.com article by Beth
Buczynski:
"If you’re a regular participant in your community’s recycling program,
you’re probably feeling pretty pleased with yourself right now. Not so
fast. In order to get the most out of these reusable waste materials,
we not only have to recycle, we have to recycle properly. That’s right,
there are rules to this recycling game, and unfortunately, many of us
are not’t following them. Below is a list of common recycling mistakes,
along with information about why it’s so important to get it right–for
your recycler, your community, and your world."
7 Recycling Mistakes
You’re Probably Making [Edited to save space - Ed.]
1. Separating (or not) – There are pros and cons to both methods. But
separating (if you don’t have to) or not separating (if you’re supposed
to) just makes things more difficult for those on the other end of your
recycling bin.
2. Including plastic bags – It is very rare for a local recycler to
accept plastic bags. Plastic bag markets require that these materials
be clean, dry and empty - keep plastic bags separate and return them to a local
grocery store that accepts them for recycling (look for a bin near the
front door).
3. Leaving lids on plastic containers – plastic caps are often NOT
recyclable and are a significant contaminant, both on and off the
bottle.
4. Including non-recyclable glass – Translucent bottles and jars are
good to go. Ceramic dishes, china plates or cups, mirrors, laboratory
glassware, light bulbs, Pyrex, porcelain and window glass are NOT.
5. Food-soaked cartons/packages – Any type of contamination is a no no.
That’s why it’s so important to clean the things that can be cleaned
(aluminum, plastic, and glass containers).
6. Removing the labels from bottles and cans – Don't bother! Same thing
goes for staples or other metal fasteners in paper and cardboard.
7. Shredded paper – “Shredded paper is too small to sort — the pieces
literally fall through the cracks of the sorting machines and end up
all over the floor of the facility, or worse, in with the glass,”
explains Go Green Woolridge. Some recycling centers will accept
shredded paper if it is contained in a paper bag and labeled “shredded
paper.” [This last one was a big surprise to me! Ed.]
