Earth News
Earth has a message for us. Can you hear
it?
Her Anxiety
Earth in beauty dressed
Awaits returning spring.
All true love must die,
Alter at the best
Into some lesser thing.
Prove that I lie.
Such body lovers have,
Such exacting breath,
That they touch or sigh.
Every touch they give,
Love is nearer death.
Prove that I lie.

Heavy Metals, Protein, Water & Stress
|
Message
from Bernadette Wulf
Greetings!
As I was
searching the Internet for an appropriate picture for this section of
my newsletter, I ran across a curious phenomenon. With St. Patty's Day
coming up, we Celtophiles tend to celebrate everything Irish... or at
least the good parts... so I thought a shamrock would be an ideal image
for March. Funny thing though, at least half of the "shamrocks" I found
online were actually four leaf clovers. How absurd!
Though the shamrock is indeed a type of clover, and the four leaf
clover does symbolize good luck (which may be how it got connected with
the "luck of the Irish"), the old Irish people would have been far more
interested in the three leaved variety than in the four, because the
number three runs through Irish mythology and spirituality. It is said
that St. Patrick used the shamrock to symbolize the Christian trinity,
and that may be true, but long before St. Patrick the Irish recognized a
triple goddess, and nearly everything important in Irish culture was
based on the number three... but I won't go into all that here. I just
found it interesting that the Hallmark types are turning attention away
from that spiritual trinity aspect and focusing on the number four,
which generally represents the material world. Food for thought!
On a more mundane level, we are taking a look at heavy metals this
month, from two possible sources - rice protein and aluminum foil.
Fortunately, if you already have collected heavy metals in your body,
you can remove them with various forms of chelation treatments, but it
is best to avoid them in the first place.
Then we have some surprising news about nuts, water, and stress -
surprising to me anyway. I would have never guessed that it takes 3,170
gallons of water to produce a pound of chocolate! You will want to
watch the video on stress at the end. I found it very uplifting and I'm
sure you will too.
Happy March, Happy Spring, Happy Ostara, and Happy whatever else you
like to celebrate. The important thing is CELEBRATE! We are alive and
the world is such an amazing place.
To
Your Health!

Heavy
Metal Alert - Rice Protein Products
In
general, I love Garden of Life products, like their raw, food-based
Vitamin Code vitamins and mineral supplements (which are not included
in this heavy metal alert), but it sounds like their raw protein
powders are downright dangerous. Chinese rice is probably the main
culprit here. Because organic standards in China are nowhere near as
stringent as standards in the USA, contaminants have frequently been
found in other "organic" Chinese products as well as rice.
"(NaturalNews) Natural News has confirmed, via three different
laboratories, the presence of significant levels of the heavy metals
tungsten, lead and cadmium in Garden of Life 'beyond organic' raw
protein products. This has been confirmed across multiple lots of
Garden of Life Original, Vanilla and Chocolate Cacao and Vanilla Spiced
Chai. Tungsten has also been found and confirmed in Garden of Life 'Raw
Fit' products."
This is unfortunate, since Garden of Life is one of the few companies
that creates raw, organic, food-based supplements, and I would like to
support their efforts to provide such high quality products. However,
this is a good reminder to be vigilant about where our food comes from,
and to eat a well balanced diet that is not dependent on supplements.
Nuts, seeds, and beans supply plenty of high-quality protein when
included in a
varied whole foods diet.

Nuts
- A Better Source of Protein
Speaking
of nuts, there are some compelling reasons to eat them everyday, in
moderation. They
could prolong your life! Maybe those squirrels are on to something.
From NaturalNews.com: "According to the study, people who ate nuts once
a week had an 11 percent reduction in mortality rate. Those who ate
nuts four or two times a week had a 13 percent reduction, five times a
week had a 15 percent reduction, while those who ate nuts every day had
a 20 percent reduction in death rate."
20 percent is a huge difference, statistically speaking. The article
doesn't say that you will live 20 percent longer, just that you have 20
percent lower chance of death at any particular time, compared with
those who are not eating nuts everyday. It appears that this is
partially due to the fact that those who eat nuts tend to make other
healthy lifestyle choices, like getting more exercise, not smoking,
eating fruits, avoiding heavy meat and dairy consumption, and drinking
plenty of water.

Aluminum Foil Can Make You Stupid!
Heavy
metals are lurking in many places in our kitchens - even in that
innocent looking foil you use to cover baking dishes, or wrap ears of
corn or potatoes on the barbecue. I've always wondered if that stuff
leaches aluminum into food and now we have the answer. YES! If you are
going to use
it, don't heat it!
From
NaturalNews.com: "The dangers of aluminum - Although aluminum is highly
toxic, our kidneys are fortunately able to flush most of it from our
bodies, given enough time. However, aluminum also has a tendency to
build up in both bone and brain tissue. People with impaired kidney
function are at particular risk of this.
"According to a review conducted by researchers from the University of
Kentucky Medical Center and published in the journal Neurotoxicology in
2000, aluminum is definitely capable of crossing the BBB [blood brain
barrier], increases the effectiveness of cell-destroying oxidation and
may cause damage that mimics the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
"Researchers remain split over whether aluminum directly causes
Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Studies have suggested,
however, that brain damage from dementia may actually increase the
brain's absorption of aluminum, thereby leading to even further cell
damage and death."
Also from http://naturalmentor.com:
"…stop cooking with
aluminum foil - A research study at American University, found that one
meal cooked in aluminum can have up to 100mg of the metal. Using
electron microscopy they found significant leaching of the aluminum
into the food. Food that was covered by foil leached excessive aluminum
into the food….the higher the temperature, the more the leaching. The
study concluded that aluminum foil should be used only for packing, not
cooking."

Your Water
"Footprint"
With
the drought in California and our recent heavy rains, the issue of
water is on the forefront for many of us. It is interesting to take a
look at how much water we are actually using in hidden ways.
Here are some of the more surprising statistics from http://www.care2.com:
1 gallon (3.8 liters) of milk requires 880 gallons (3,331 L) of water.
1 gallon of wine requires 1,008 gallons of water.
1 pound of beef requires 1,799 gallons of water.
1 pound of pork requires 576 gallons of water.
1 pound of chicken requires 468 gallons of water.
1 cotton T-shirt requires 713 gallons of water.
500 sheets of paper require 1,321 gallons of water.
1 lb of chocolate requires 3,170 gallons of water.
The chocolate was a real surprise to me. Who knew? Good thing most of
us don't eat very much of it!

Wheat and Impaired Brain Function
I don't know
about you, but I've been noticing a negative reaction from eating wheat
for many years. I'm not really allergic, because I don't have a serious
reaction, but I get a scratchy feeling in the back of my throat and my
sinuses tend to get stuffed up. Your symptoms may be totally different,
but it is likely that you have a negative reaction to wheat as well.
Other gluten grains may also be culprits, but they don't seem to bother
me as much as wheat, probably because they have not been as hybridized
as much. If you have any suspicions about your own sensitivity, you
might want to follow up by reading this entire article.
From
greenmedinfo.com: "As far back as 1954, reports of the full or partial
resolution of schizophrenia following a gluten free diet began to
surface in the medical literature. We covered this remarkable pattern
of associations in a previous article titled, "60 Years of Research
Links Gluten Grains to Schizophrenia." While the explanation for this
intriguing connection has remained focused on the disruption of the
gut-brain axis and the presence in wheat of a wide range of
pharmacologically active and mostly opioid receptor modulating
polypeptides, a new and possibly more disturbing explanation is
beginning to surface: wheat consumption cuts off blood flow to the
brain."

The
UP Side of Stress!
Have
you been feeling a lot of stress lately? That's what I've been hearing
from many clients and friends. 2013 and the beginning of 2014
have been very challenging for many people in so many different ways. (Hang
in there - the second half of 2014 promises to be a much smoother
ride.) Those challenges
can add a lot of stress to your life, but
stress may not be such a bad thing after all.
We've all heard the warnings that stress is bad for our health; stress
is a big factor in heart disease, etc., etc., but what if it wasn't
even the stress that was the problem? What if it was our BELIEFS about
stress?
Kelly McGonigal makes a really good argument for the case that stress
in itself is not really the harmful factor, because only those who
believe it is harmful suffer the negative consequences we have all been
trained to expect. Check out this fascinating look at stress and how it
affects our bodies and health.
