Earth News
Earth has a message for us.
Can you hear it?
A
longing to wander tears my heart when I hear trees rustling in the wind
at evening. If one listens to them silently for a long time, this
longing reveals its kernel, its meaning.
It is not so much a matter of escaping from one's
suffering, though it may seem to be so. It is a longing for home, for a
memory of the mother, for new metaphors for life. It leads home.
Every path leads homeward, every step
is birth, every step is death, every grave
is mother.

Change is a Constant - Be
Prepared!
|
Message
from Bernadette Wulf
Greetings!
Wow,
it's been quite a month! Hurricane Sandy smacked the East Coast like
nothing they've seen in recorded history. Best wishes to all who are
dealing with the aftermath. Are they still arguing about climate change
on Wall Street?
Sandy was another wake up call for those of us who have
been procrastinating about stocking up on emergency supplies. (See
article below.) I suspect we will be seeing more radical weather
patterns in the future. Be prepared!
I don't follow sports, but even I am impressed with the Giants winning
the World Series - again. They must be doing something right. It is
good to see people celebrating in my home town, even though I haven't
lived there since I was a baby.
Yay San Francisco!
I'm celebrating the Celtic New Year. So Happy New Year! We call it Samhain (pronounced
sawen), but most people know it as Halloween. It is the time of year
when we honor our ancestors, celebrate the last of the harvest, and
plant seeds of imagination for the year to come.
Speaking of Halloween, did you know that most of the candy
kids collect contains GMO ingredients in the form of: corn syrup, corn
starch, soy lecithin, cotton seed oil, canola oil, fructose, and/or
beet sugar. One kid rebelled after having his junk food candy stash
confiscated by his parents, and Unreal
Candy was born. (See first
article below.) Good to know there are kids out there doing something
besides texting. They are the hope of the future.
This month we will take a look at a few exercises you can do while
driving to tone
your tummy and derriere, and then a few words on the latest rice
controversy. To eat or not to eat. I'll share one man's opinion and you
can decide for yourself. We end with a review of the Body Ecology Diet,
which I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to improve general
health or clear up nagging symptoms that haven't responded to other
approaches.
If you are on facebook, check out my All New HealItAll
fan page
and don't forget to click the "like" button. You will find all sorts of
interesting health tidbits there, including a GMO candy chart with
brand name photos (just in time to get the Halloween candy away from
your kids before they eat it)!

Unreal
Candy - A Better Choice
I'm
not sure that better candy will make a big enough difference in the
junk food trend to stop childhood obesity, but it's a good start.
Unreal Candy is the brainchild of a 13-year-old kid who was disgruntled
about losing his Halloween stash to his wisely concerned parents. He
did some research, got some help, and Unreal Candy was born.
Just like the kids in the old advertisement you see here, Nicky went
back to the basic pure ingredients of yesteryear. The result was candy
that is healthier and tastes better than the commercial brands
available in most stores. Of course that doesn't make it a "health
food," but most people can get away with eating a little candy now and
then, so why not make it with the best possible ingredients?

Disaster
Preparedness
In
the wake of hurricane Sandy, I'm sure we are all much more aware of the
immense, unstoppable power of Mother Nature! My condolences to those
who have lost loved ones, homes, and possessions and to those who are
now faced with the challenge of cleaning up and rebuilding after the
devastation of the storm - here in the U.S., as well as in Cuba, Haiti,
and the Dominican Republic.
Destructive
acts of nature can happen anywhere, at any time, so I thought it would
be a good idea to share Mike Adams' list of emergency supplies to keep
on hand in case of future disasters. Adams has taught disaster
preparedness to thousands of people, so his list is one of the best
available.
I like to think of it like preparing for an extended camping trip - a
good sleeping bag, water filter, several gallons of water, nutritious
food in bear and bug-proof containers, sproutable seeds and sprouting
jars, canned foods, can opener, warm clothes, good walking shoes, first
aid kit, back pack,
flashlights with extra batteries, a full tank of gas in the car, warm
hat, jacket, thermal underwear, extra socks, band aids for blisters,
food for pets. The
time to start an emergency kit is now, because when an emergency
strikes you may not have time to shop, or the shelves may be empty by
the time you get there!

Tone
Your Abs While Driving
Here's a fun way to entertain yourself while driving, when you are
stuck in commuter traffic, or just making a quick trip to the local
market. It's called the Ab Vacuum. The purpose is to firm and flatten
your tummy. According to the Barton Publishing Blog:
"Ab vacuums are simple:
Start by inhaling deeply.
As you exhale, pull your belly button in
as far as you can.
Imagine touching your belly button to
your spine.
Take short breaths.
Hold for 10-20 seconds.
Repeat several times."
Another great driving exercise is known as the "Deer Exercise."
There are several different ways to do it, but it generally consists of
contracting the pelvic or anal muscles and holding as long as you can,
which helps to move energy from
the base of the spine to the top of the head. In Chinese medicine, deer
antlers are considered powerful, because the deer constantly wag their
tails and contract their anal muscles, sending energy into their
antlers. This exercise can help to prevent incontinence and hemorrhoids
and increases sexual energy.
You can also try the "Glute Squeeze," tightening the buttocks to firm
up the derriere. If you do these everyday, you will soon notice that
you have more energy and better muscle tone. Why not, you're already
spending the time driving?

Arsenic
and Old Rice
Yeah,
that's a silly title, but it got your attention, didn't it? You may
have run across recent articles about arsenic in rice, so I thought I
would include a word on the subject. While I think it is a good idea to
avoid eating a lot of rice (or any grain) in general, it may be more
important to avoid rice grown in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and
Texas, where the highest arsenic levels have been found.
A recent NaturalNews.com article states, "Consumer Reports has
recommended that people avoid eating rice and rice products. However,
there are some researchers that disagree with that warning. Brown rice
and wheat germ - both found to have elevated levels of arsenic -
contain important compounds such as vitamin B3, niacin and folates,
which aid in the elimination of arsenic in the body. Instead of
completely axing these products from your diet, some researchers simply
advise consumers to eat a balanced diet and, when eating rice, rinse it
before and after cooking."
That sounds like a good approach to me. I would certainly avoid rice
milk and rice baby cereals, but Lundberg organic brown rice, grown in
California, has been found to be much lower in arsenic than rice grown
in other states, so that would be my choice. More important may be
eating lots of fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, and a wide variety of
grains, seeds, nuts, and beans to minimize the effect of any particular
foods.

Body
Ecology - Gut Healing Nutrition
Did you know that candida can cause leaky gut
syndrome? Candida is a yeast that naturally grows in our intestines,
but too many sugars and starches (as well as antibiotics, prescription
drugs, alcohol, caffeine, molds, fungus, and parasites) can cause
candida overgrowth. This can lead to many symptoms including:
food allergies
rheumatoid
arthritis
multiple
sclerosis
eczema
fibromyalgia
Crohn's
disease
Raynaud's phenomenon
chronic
urticaria (hives)
inflammatory
bowel disease
Irritable
Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
in all its forms.
facial swelling on exposure to strong
smells
bloating,
gas, and cramps after eating
alternating
bouts of constipation and diarrhea
headaches
irritability
poor
concentration
I guess I should feel lucky, since I only had the first symptom! I've
tried a lot of different "healthy eating plans" over the years,
treating my body something like a human guinea pig. In some ways that
has been great, because I've learned a lot, but in other ways it has
disturbed my digestive system enough to cause somewhat chronic sinus
congestion and spring allergies. It wasn't until I read and tried the Body Ecology Diet
that I made the connection between healthy digestion and the state of
my sinuses.
This diet is designed to clear candida overgrowth, restore healthy gut
flora, and heal leaky gut syndrome, which is the most common cause of
food allergies and sensitivities. It is a bit challenging at first,
because there are no sugars, and hardly any starches, allowed for three
months or more, and that includes most fruits. My plan was to start the
diet after persimmon and pineapple guava season was over, which would
be toward the end of November, because I didn't want to miss all the
fresh fruit that is so abundant where I live. However, I have started
experimenting with the diet already, with amazing results in the first
few weeks.
For the first time in years, I don't have to frequently clear my
throat. That annoying post nasal drip has stopped! I also effortlessly
dropped 5 lbs, even though I've been eating more than usual. I wasn't
trying to lose weight, but it's nice to feel a bit lighter on my feet.
I would highly recommend the diet to anyone who wants to lose weight in
a healthy way. In general, I just feel healthier and more energetic.
The one drawback I've found is that constipation can be an issue on the
first stage of this diet. Donna Gates, the author, recommends enemas
and colonic irrigations, but I knew there must be an easier way. I
started taking Ayervedic Triphala once or twice a day and haven't had a
problem since. Triphala, unlike ordinary laxatives, is actually healing
for the digestive system and can be used for long periods without harm.
Of course I'm looking forward to the day when I can get back to my
fresh greens and fruit smoothies in the morning, the best way to stay
"regular" I've found.
The mainstay of the Body Ecology Diet is probiotics in the form of raw
cultured vegetables and coconut water kefir, both of which are easy and
inexpensive to make at home. Consuming these at every meal will restore
healthy gut flora as the candida dies off from lack of its favorite
food - sugar (including the sugars formed from eating starches). Once
your gut health is restored, you can begin adding in your favorite
healthy foods, like fresh fruits, grains and beans that are not allowed
in the first stage. If you give it a try, I would love to hear about
your results.
