Mostly Good News for Autumn

Greetings!
Have you heard? Cantaloupes can kill. It's all over the news, but the
news stories are not reporting WHY our cantaloupes have become so
deadly. Nor did they report why spinach was contaminated with an E.
coli super-bug not so long ago. What is happening to our farms that is
causing fresh produce to become so dangerous?
The causes are multiple, but the main problems are feedlots and
antibiotics. Antibiotics create "super-bugs" in farm animals (and
humans), those super-bugs are passed into their manure, and feedlots
concentrate manure runoff in the water supply that ends up on produce
farms. Ultimately, it always comes down to money, but let's bypass that
issue and just look at solutions. How can we protect our food supply?
Are you eating meat, eggs, or dairy products from animals raised on
high-density factory farms? If so, you are part of the problem. The
high density that allows farms to produce cheaper animal products
necessitates the use of antibiotics, because animals cannot live in
such artificial conditions without getting sick. Grains are not a
natural food for cattle. Feedlots, by definition, destroy the health of
cattle by feeding grains to make the meat more appealing to humans, but
that appealing meat is actually the byproduct of a sick animal that is
kept alive with antibiotics until ready for slaughter. Does that sound
appealing to you?
This is a huge subject and a huge problem. I hope the recent incidents
with cantaloupes will inspire more and more people to think about it
and change their buying habits. If we don't buy it, they will stop
producing it. We certainly don't need it. Most people eat far more
animal products than their bodies can handle, which leads to
degenerative diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and
obesity.
Factory farmed animal products may be a lot cheaper, but they are
endangering our entire food supply. Factory farms also subject
countless animals to lives of misery and disease. Is that really where
you want to get your food? Think about it next time you are at the
grocery store.
On a happier note, we have some good news about drill-free dentistry,

diabetes, the hidden value of eye exams, an interesting podcast on

bunion forms. It won't win any awards for writing style, but the

the vegan diet. The most useful information she offers is a list
called: Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid. Her view is that most people
will do better with small amounts of animal products, such as free
range egg yolks, but she offers options for those who choose a vegan
diet.
