Great Skin and the Wheat Villain
|
Message
from Bernadette Wulf
-
Greetings!
Hey, it's our 5 year anniversary issue! My how time flies.
Funny how I always seem to be in a rush to get out my newsletter, even
though I make a point most of the time of slowing down and letting my
intuition dictate my priorities. It really does seem like time is
speeding up, doesn't it? Speaking of that, I went on a dolphin
excursion a few weeks ago, and the dolphins seemed to really enjoy
racing the boat when the captain stepped on the gas. It made me giggle
as they showed me that speed can be fun. You don't have to resist it.
It can be exhilarating. Good to keep in mind, since it doesn't seem
like things are going to slow down anytime soon.
FYI, since readers have commented that Dr. Mercola and NaturalNews are
heavily referenced in my newsletters, I wanted to give a note of
explanation. NaturalNews sends out around 300 articles per month and
Mercola sends around 90. I am on many other health email and snail-mail
lists, but most of them only send out 4 to 12 articles per month. So
the odds are that I will find more articles of interest from the more
prolific publishers, both of which sometimes offer very interesting
information. In actual fact, neither Mercola nor NaturalNews are my
favorite sources of information, and I do take issue with some of what
they publish. After sifting through hundreds of articles every month, I
simply choose the ones I want to be able to refer to in the future. I
assume that most of my readers will also find these interesting. You
can always follow up on the source links included in the referenced
articles if you want more or different information.
This month wheat, and its gluten, shows up as a villain several times.
Makes you begin to wonder if you really should avoid it, doesn't it?
Once again, Vitamin D is the super hero of the month, and astaxanthin
anti-oxidant for youthful skin must be the super heroine. We also have
natural remedies for Crohn's disease, how wheat can harm your brain,
natural flea and tick control, and a great audio on skin care. I hope
you enjoy them as much as I did.
To Your Health!

Vital
Importance of Vitamin D
-
Scientists are finding that Vitamin D is extremely important for many
aspects of health, but unfortunately, most people in America are
deficient! I was, even though I was taking a daily D3 supplement of
2000mgs. The only way to know if your vitamin D level is adequate is to
get yourself tested.
Get tested and supplement with D3 if your level is below 60. It's a no
brainer. If you want to know why, check out the interview with Dr.
Cannell.
I learned a lot from this interview. Here's an excerpt from
Mercola.com: "How Much Vitamin D Must You Take to Reach Therapeutically
Healthy Levels? Dr. Hollis has released preliminary findings of a brand
new study that has not yet been formally published. In the interview
above [see link below], Carol [Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth]
shares some of those details:
"One of the most significant findings is how much intake it takes to
get to these higher levels. For example, there has been a rule of thumb
that for each 1,000 IUs of vitamin D you take you would get a serum
level rise of about 10 ng/mL… Well, it doesn't work that
way.
"What we are finding is that once you get above the age of 30, the
amount of rise that you get for each dosage [of oral vitamin D] is
considerably less than that. For example, between the age of 40 and 50,
you'd have to take about 2,000 IU to reach a serum level of 10 ng/ml.
You only get a 5 ng/mL rise for each 1,000 IU, not 10 ng/ml.
"… What this means is that people have to take a lot more.
It's going to take about 6,000 IU a day to get about 90-95 percent of
the population above 40 ng/mL.' Some people will clearly need more."

How
to Beat Crohn's Disease
-
Whenever I hear about any sort of auto-immune disease, including
Chrohn's, I immediately think of gluten. Why? Because gluten is often
the trigger for auto-immune reactions. I suspect that most cases could
be cleared up quickly by also removing all packaged foods, dairy
products, and other grains from the diet. In addition, the following
suggestions for anti-inflammatory foods would be helpful.
From NaturalNews.com: "An anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle are
critical for full recovery from this condition. Anti-inflammatory foods
help to modulate the immune system and give it a more accurate pair of
eyes so as to not over-inflame when stimulated. To effectively
de-inflame it is key to completely avoid man-made foods, sugars, and
food allergens as listed above [see full article]. The long chain omega
3 fatty acids EPA and DHA powerfully de-inflame the body by restoring
natural balance to the lipid wall of the cell membrane.
"Other great anti-inflammatory foods include coconut products, berries,
and non-denatured, whey protein from grass-fed cows and goats. This
protein source is also loaded with L-glutamine and enhances cellular
glutathione stores which are both necessary for rebuilding the gut and
de-inflaming the body. Anti-inflammatory herbs such as turmeric,
ginger, boswellia, cinnamon, rosemary, & oregano among others
should be used as much as possible."
I would also suggest taking a good pro-biotic to balance the gut flora
and assist proper digestion. As with most health issues, it is really a
matter of allowing the body to heal itself by following the laws of
nature. Avoiding processed foods, eating plenty of fiber, avoiding
constipation, and limiting consumption of animal products will go a
long way toward preventing most bowel diseases. And, as I mentioned
above, for many people avoiding gluten will also be necessary, at least
for a couple of years, in order to heal inflammation and leaky gut.

Astaxanthin
for Youthful Skin
-
If you haven't heard of astaxanthin yet, you will soon. It's the new
darling of the supplement industry. According to Dr. Mercola,
"Astaxanthin has recently jumped to the front of the line in terms of
its status as a 'supernutrient,' becoming the focus of a large and
growing number of peer-reviewed scientific studies. One of the benefits
of astaxanthin that has piqued the interest of researchers is its
ability to help protect your skin from the sun, reducing the signs of
aging. However, ataxanthin's benefits to your health are more than skin
deep—in fact, so many benefits that I've had to write several
articles just to cover the jaw-dropping activities of this amazing
nutrient."
Astaxanthin comes from an algae and appears to act as a sunscreen from
the inside out. It prevents wrinkles, dry skin, and age spots, and
reverses signs of aging. How does it get any better than that? Here's
how. It also seems to be the most powerful antioxidant available. Check
out the full article to learn more.

Wheat
May Be Harming Your Brain
-
I've been reading more and more articles lately suggesting that our
heavy dependence on grains, particularly wheat and other
gluten-containing grains, may not be optimal for health. Here's what
Dr. Mercola has to say about it, "Unfortunately, there's a large body
of evidence indicating that whole grains, and whole wheat in particular
(yes even organic), can contribute to significant health
problems—both physical and mental. This evidence, however,
has not registered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), or the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA)—the first two of which developed
the dietary guideline to consume three or more ounces of whole grain
products per day.
"When you begin to review the evidence stacked up against whole grains,
it becomes rather self-evident that our reliance on wheat and other
grains may be one of the primary culprits for the poor health of so
many."
The article goes on to explain how eating wheat and other grains can
have a negative effect on mental health. I wonder how many
psychiatrists would consider this before prescribing anti-psychotic or
anti-depressive drugs. Wouldn't it make sense to at least try
eliminating grains for several months before dumping a lot of toxic
chemicals into a person's blood stream and brain? I would think so.

Stop
Fleas and Ticks Without Toxic Chemicals
-
I have always had an instinctive aversion to those systemic behind-the
neck flea and tick treatments used on dogs and cats. How could a
chemical that invades your pet's system possibly be beneficial to their
health? There is nothing like that in nature! Now there is evidence
that these products are dangerous and even sometimes deadly.
From Dr. Mercola's newsletter: "In April of last year, the EPA issued
an advisory about 'spot-on' chemical pesticide products. These are
products applied to the neck or back of dogs and cats as a flea and
tick preventive. The advisory was issued due to a significant increase
in reported adverse reactions – everything from mild skin
irritation to seizures and death. In 2008, over 44,000 reactions
presumed to be tied to spot-on products were reported by pet owners,
veterinarians, and other animal caretakers. And the 44,000 reported
incidents in 2008 was a significant jump from the 28,000 the prior
year, and included 600 deaths."
I care too much about my pets to take chances like that with their well
being. I bet you do too. I have found that feeding a top-quality
(preferably raw) diet and using essential oils like cedar, eucalyptus,
pennyroyal, or lemongrass on pet collars will do an effective job of
eliminating fleas. Follow the link below for more great ideas.

Surprising
Facts for Beautiful Skin
-
I love it when someone can totally surprise me with health information.
I read so much of it that it often becomes repetitive, but Shawn
Stevenson really caught me by surprise when he said that the number one
factor in having beautiful skin is saturated fat! What? That nasty kind
of fat that everyone is warned to stay away from? That made me stop and
really listen, and I was glad I did.
Did you know that cacao butter is great for facial skin, particularly
around the eyes? Or that rubbing coconut oil all over your body is
really good for your skin? (Editors note: There is a good deal of
evidence that coconut oil can help fight Alzheimers and dementia, too.)
Stevenson talks about the importance of moving lymph, cleansing the
liver, why we should never cook with olive oil (or even buy olive oil
that is packaged in clear bottles), and why saturated fats are the only
fats that we should ever cook with. Again, gluten, dairy, and sugars
are named as culprits in skin damage, which is not surprising, since
skin reflects the general health of the body. Heavy metals, rancid
oils, electromagnetic pollution and stress are also suspects in skin
damage. Have a listen and learn all about it.
