Message from Bernadette Wulf
-
Greetings!
This issue is dedicated to my mother Ann who peacefully passed on to
the next realm on April 26th. I will always be inspired by her deep
faith, enduring patience, and loving spirit.
Happy May Day to all!
In the good old days, May Day, or Beltaine as it was known then, was
the second biggest holiday of the year (after Halloween or Samhain). It
was a time when the abundance of life and the renewal of nature was
celebrated. I invite you all to step outside and enjoy the sunshine and
the glorious blossoming world all around you. In my little garden new
leaves are shooting out from branches and flowers are bursting into
bloom, a beautiful reminder that life goes on.
I apologize for the lightweight newsletter this month. Circumstances
have not allowed me much time for working on it, but I hope you will
find some fascinating tidbits of information here, never the less. I'm
heading off to help with Mom's funeral arrangements, where we will
celebrate her long, wonderful life.
To Your Health!

Magic
Underwear Reveals Dangers of Sitting
-
Though it would be nice to think that we could lounge around all day
without adverse effects, science is indicating that is not the case.
According to New York Times Magazine: "This is your body on chairs:
Electrical activity in the muscles drops — 'the muscles go as
silent as those of a dead horse,' Hamilton says — leading to
a cascade of harmful metabolic effects. Your calorie-burning rate
immediately plunges to about one per minute, a third of what it would
be if you got up and walked. Insulin effectiveness drops within a
single day, and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes rises. So does
the risk of being obese. The enzymes responsible for breaking down
lipids and triglycerides — for 'vacuuming up fat out of the
bloodstream,' as Hamilton puts it — plunge, which in turn
causes the levels of good (HDL) cholesterol to fall." All that just
from sitting on your pratt!
It took a pair of "magic underwear" and an overeating experiment to
reveal how much damage a sedentary lifestyle really causes: "...with
the help of the motion-tracking underwear, they discovered the answer.
'The people who didn’t gain weight were unconsciously moving
around more,' Dr. Jensen says."
Apparently, even wiggling around in your chair is better for you than
sitting still, so parents and teachers - stop telling kids to sit
still! (And don't give them bathroom passes. Just kidding.) Better yet,
get them up out of their chairs. And that goes for the rest of us, too.
Our bodies are designed to move!

Do Psychiatric Drugs Work for
Depression?
-
I am pretty impressed with Dr. Mercola. I have heard him in interviews
with people with opposing views and he was very open minded and able to
put aside his own biases in order to learn something new. That is
fairly unusual for a doctor in the public limelight.
In this article he tackles the issue of psychiatric drugs and the real
causes of depression. With his many years of clinical experience
treating depression, I think his views are well worth examining.
From Mercola.com - "As a family physician I have treated many thousands
of depressed patients. Depression was actually one of my primary
concerns in the mid 80s when I first started practicing, however at
that time my primary tool was using antidepressants. I put thousands of
people on these drugs and acquired a fair level of experience in this
area.
"Thankfully I learned more and was able to stop using all these drugs.
It was my experience that the chemical imbalance was merely a massive
marketing gimmick to support the use of expensive and toxic
antidepressants.
"Most of you have probably heard that depression is due to a "chemical
imbalance in your brain," which these drugs are designed to correct.
Unfortunately for anyone who has ever swallowed this marketing ploy,
this is NOT a scientific statement."
Read on for Dr. Mercola's view of the real causes of depression and how
to get yourself out of it.

Microwave Ovens Can Kill
-
Of course, one plant dying from being watered with microwaved water
does not prove much, but when taken along with many other studies, you
have to start paying attention. Some people keep using microwave ovens,
even when presented with substantial evidence that they can be damaging
to their health. That is their choice. They may also continue consuming
fries and sodas everyday!
Other people just didn't know they were harmful. If you are the later,
take a look at this article. If you are still on the fence about
microwaves, you may also want to read the article. It's not the
greatest article I've ever read on the dangers of microwaves, but it
gets the point across. Microwave ovens may be convenient, but at what
price?

Excellent Article on Cancer Treatment
-
Thanks to Dr. Mercola again, we will wrap up this month's newsletter
with one of the better articles on cancer treatment that I've seen. If
you or a loved one are faced with decisions about cancer treatment,
this article would be a good place to start.
One of the great things about it is that it recognizes the fact that it
is not a "one size fits all" sort of question. Every body is different,
has a different history, different genetics, different nutritional
needs, different types of cancers, and different treatments that work
or don't work. Check it out.
