Looking for the Silver Lining
|
Message
from Bernadette Wulf
-
Greetings!
Did you notice that I changed the title to Natural Wellness News,
rather than Natural Health News? I did that because I was just
listening to Dee Wallace talk about moving into the new year. Her main
point was that it is time to change our focus to creativity rather than
fighting against what we don't want.
One of the things she said was that the word "wellness" has a higher
vibration than the word "health." I had never thought about it before,
but when she said that it struck a chord. The word "health" has a
little feeling of lack of health within it, but "wellness" has a purely
positive energy about it. Just changing that one word could bring about
a whole new way of looking at life.
Meanwhile, January went by like a hurricane and I find myself
scrambling to get this newsletter out on the first of February. My
predictable world was turned upside down when my teenage nanny-charge
ran into some mental health issues that landed us in the emergency room
three times and has now landed her, for the second time in a month, in
a mental hospital. I feel like I usually know what to do when faced
with physical health challenges, but the mind is so much more
mysterious, and this poor kid got off to such a rocky start in life
that it is hard to know what triggered her recent problems. Needless to
say, it has been very stressful for all concerned, but every cloud must
have a silver lining, as they say.
Signs of hope are bursting all around us in the world of nature. Acacia
blossoms are the first sign that spring is near, here in Sonoma County.
New leaves are pushing out of barren branches and flower bulbs seem to
be popping up everywhere, reminding me to put my trust in the wisdom of
Life and the bounty of Nature, with the knowing that on some level all
is well.
I was quite discouraged to find out that Whole Foods Market, Organic
Valley, and Stonyfield Farm have caved in to the pressure from
Monsanto. If these supposedly "natural" companies won't stand up for
consumer safety, who can we trust?
I urge you all to take action for GMO food labeling at the
organicconsumers.org link at the bottom of the article titled: "The
Organic Elite Surrender to Monsanto." Looks like "we the people" are
going to have to take down this Goliath on our own.
Cell phones have been big in the news this month, and not in a good
way. More evidence is coming in that they can cause cancers and other
health risks. Corded phones are your best bet, or at least use a
speaker phone if you must be on a cell phone. Your body will thank you.
The good news is: Five healthy foods can help you burn calories.
And: Melatonin may be a key to preventing some kinds of cancer,
dementia, and aging.
Thank goodness for the good news! And Happy Valentine's Day to all.
To Your Health!

Five
Foods to Burn Calories
-
The top five negative-calorie health foods that burn fat while making
you feel full according to NaturalNews.com -
#1) Celery
You can eat as much celery as you want, and you won't gain body fat,
because it takes more calories to digest it than you gain by eating it.
#2) Lettuce, onions and greens
Mostly water, so they won't add inches to your waistline.
#3) Kelp noodles - made out of sea kelp, and packed with water. Great
in soups, raw noodle dishes and Italian-style dishes like spaghetti.
#4) Pickles, kimchi and raw sauerkraut
Pickles are made from cucumbers, and cucumbers are a "negative-calorie
food." One cup of cucumbers contains a mere 16 calories. Watch out for
those with added sugar and FD&C Yellow #5, though.
#5) Grapefruit
If you are looking for a healthy way to lose weight, try some or all of
these foods. They are good for you and for your waistline.

Strong
Cell Phone Cancer Risk
-
According to Dr. Mercola - "A recent study could change the debate over
cell phones and cancer. A research group has reported a sharp increase
in the incidence of parotid gland tumors over the last 30 years, with
the steepest increase happening after 2001."
The article goes on to say, "The Interphone study claimed that use of a
digital cell phone for more than 10 years led to a 118 percent increase
in the risk of brain cancer. But an analysis by Hardell et al in 2006,
which experts consider a very well designed study, revealed that the
increased risk of malignant brain tumors could be as high as 180
percent."
This is serious evidence that should make us all sit up and take
notice. Cell phones may not disappear for a long time, but we can make
choices that will cut way down on the risks of using them. Read the
article below for tips on how to avoid the worst risks of cell phones
and other wireless devices.

Avoid
Getting Zapped by Your Phone
-
Here are some tips from Ann Louie Gittleman's newsletter on how to
avoid the dangers of cell phones and other wireless devices -
"• Text, rather than talk, whenever feasible.
• Use speaker mode with both cell and cordless phones, and use
a landline at home and work.
• Reduce your total wireless exposure, turning off your router
at night and using a wired mouse.
• Don’t put your laptop in your lap, and use
“grounding” or Earthing pads under your computer to
protect
your body from a buildup of electrical charges.
• Don’t use your phones when reception is poor (in
elevators, subways, and trains) since it has to power up even more to
get a signal to the tower, and turn them off when you’re not
using them.
• Limit children’s cell/cordless phone use to
emergencies,
and consider following the dictates of European countries that restrict
the use of cell phones to people 18 years of age or older.

The
Organic Elite Surrender to Monsanto
-
I really hope somebody will open a chain of REALLY natural food stores.
Now that Whole Foods seems to be taking over the natural foods grocery
market niche, many of us are not left with any other options if we want
to shop for quality organic foods. Even though you have to really
search for them at Whole Foods, they do at least have some. But, if you
do have other options, this would be a good time to boycott Whole Foods
and let them know why.
If you are looking for a good business opportunity, jump on this one -
a totally organic, non-GMO, chain of stores that really support human
and environmental health. I would certainly shop there and so would
lots of other people.
I won't let the USDA off the hook either, for betraying consumer
confidence and strong public opinion against GMO crops. It is time they
started listening to the people rather than the big money guys with
their multi-billion dollar corporations. This will pretty much spell
the end of the organic meat and dairy industries. Personally, I don't
think anyone really needs meat or dairy, but for those who choose it,
they will no longer have a choice about whether their food contains
GMOs or not. GMO alfalfa will eventually pollute almost the entire
supply of animal foods.
From OrganicConsumers.org - "In a cleverly worded, but profoundly
misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market,
while proclaiming their support for organics and "seed purity," gave
the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the "conditional
deregulation" of Monsanto's genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant
alfalfa. Beyond the regulatory euphemism of "conditional deregulation,"
this means that WFM and their colleagues are willing to go along with
the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial
crop, alfalfa; guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across
the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic
animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and
destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide,
Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that
will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on
millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S."

Jump
for Immune Support
-
If you are looking for a simple and easy way to improve your health and
boost your immune system, rebounding may be just what you are looking
for. Even gentle bouncing (recommended if you have back problems) on a
rebounder can do wonders for your body. If you are already in great
shape, you can bounce more vigorously for added benefit.
From WellbeingJournal.com - "The rebounding motion stimulates all
internal organs, moves the cerebral-spinal fluid and the aqueous fluid
within the eyes (many people claim improved eyesight), and does wonders
for the intestines. Many immune cells such as T-lymphocytes and
macrophages are self-propelled by amoebic action. These cells contain
molecules identical to those in muscle tissue. All cells in the body
become stronger in response to the increased G-force during rebounding,
and this cellular exercise results in the self-propelled immune cells
being up to five times more active. The job description of these cells
includes eating viruses, bacteria and even cancer cells, so it is good
that they be active. This exercise directly strengthens the immune
system."

Melatonin
Fights Cancer, Dementia and Aging
-
Melatonin has been known to help regulate sleep cycles, but recent
research points to many other advantages. Of course the drug companies
always want to push their pills, and melatonin can actually be
beneficial in that form. I even use it myself occasionally, when my
sleep cycles are disturbed by travel or too much stimulation. However,
the best way to get melatonin is when your own body naturally creates
it as the day grows darker.
If you find that you are not sleeping well, it is quite possible that
electric lights and late nights are interfering with your natural
melatonin production. Try dimming the lights at night and going to bed
earlier. In time your sleep cycle will adjust to nature's time table,
because your body will naturally produce more melatonin. You will not
only get better sleep, but you could also reap the benefits of lower
chances of cancer, dementia, and premature aging.
From NaturalNews.com - "The result of a study published in the
Behavioral and Brain Functions journal found that patients suffering
from neurologic disorders such as Parkinson`s and Alzheimer`s disease
were deficient in circulating levels of melatonin. Researchers found
that providing supplemental melatonin dramatically lowered the degree
of oxidative stress on neural mitochondria and was protective against
related free radical damage. The study authors noted that the effect of
melatonin was more pronounced on patients in the earliest stages of
disease.
"Melatonin Shown to Lower Cancer Risk by 34% - Melatonin has been shown
to be effective in the fight against many cancer lines including those
affecting the liver, breast, prostate, lung and brain."
