Greetings!
Happy New Year!
That's me crawling out of the amethyst geode, ready to start a new
year. (Photo by Ben Aronoff.) I injured my back the day before winter
solstice, so I got to start the new solar year in bed for a few days.
It gave me a lot of time to reflect on life and the changes I want to
make in the year ahead. It is definitely time to sort through piles of
papers and get rid of excess clutter. Time to focus more on creativity
and painting. And time to learn core muscle strengthening exercises to
support my back.
I like to think that, having just turned 60, a whole new phase of
discovery and creativity will be opening before me, rather than the
health challenges so many of my peers seem to be facing. Generally I am
quite healthy, but I need to learn to slow down and listen to my body
when it tells me it doesn't want to lift heavy objects! Unfortunately,
I can't be Superwoman. I have a bad habit of rushing through life
faster than a speeding bullet, trying to get things accomplished, when
I would probably accomplish a lot more with a slow and methodical
approach. The back injury was just a warning. It certainly got my
attention.
This month there is a lot of hopeful news out there. Heat treatments
for cancer look potentially promising, and a new discovery of taste
buds in the lungs could lead to the asthma relief millions have been
waiting for. Scientists are beginning to understand the keys to bone
density, though it may be awhile before their newest discoveries reach
the main stream. You don't have to wait, though. Read all about it
below.
Baby boomers and their elders will have to be extra vigilant about
shingles prevention, now that most children get vaccinated against
chicken pox. I've heard mixed reviews on the shingles vaccine, so my
preferred tactic is to keep my immune system strong - and hope to run
into a kid with chickenpox now and then.
The first article offers a handy list of the most likely nutritional
deficiencies for the average person. Look it over and see if your diet
contains a good variety of the foods listed after each nutrient. Be
sure to note which nutrients need to be eaten raw (those destroyed by
heat), and save the cooking water for those that are water soluble.
All the best in the year ahead!

Are
You Deficient?
-
Amazingly, some of the most "developed" nations in the world have
rampant nutritional deficiencies, including the USA. Eating refined,
packaged, and processed foods cannot possibly supply the body with the
nutrients it needs. Only whole foods contain all their original
nutrients , and many of those foods must be eaten raw to provide the
nutrients that are destroyed by cooking.
Ideally, everyone should be tested for vitamin and mineral levels in
order to know for sure if supplementation is necessary, but some
deficiencies are so common that most people on the SAD (standard
American) diet should be supplementing. Here's a list of the ten most
common nutritional deficiencies and some good food sources you can
include in your diet to make sure you won't become one of these
deficient nutritional statistics.
Top 10 Nutritional Deficiencies:
1) Zinc - Sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, yeast, peanuts, beans,
wholegrain cereals, brown rice, whole wheat bread, potatoes, meats,
fish
2) Folate (Folic acid) - Raw or cooked at low temperature leafy greens,
fruits, dried beans, (water soluble, destroyed by high temperatures)
3) Calcium/Magnesium - Leafy greens, sweet potato, beet greens, potato,
white beans, tomato puree, clams, prune juice, carrot juice, blackstrap
molasses - I listed calcium and magnesium together, because calcium
supplements can be dangerous, leading to calcium deposits in arteries
and joints, and there is evidence that magnesium and silica are far
more important for building strong bones. (Dairy products are not the
best source, because of their high level of phosphorous and lack of
magnesium, all of which need to be kept in balance.)
4) B-12 - Animal products (meat, fish, eggs, dairy products),
Vitamineral Greens - Healthy intestinal bacteria can produce B12, but
everyone should be tested and most people should be taking a B12
supplement, since it is often not absorbed from foods. The best way to
take B12 is from a sub-lingual supplement or skin patch, (water
soluable)
5) Selenium - Brazil nuts, fish, eggs (if from chickens fed
selenium-rich diet), grains grown in selenium-rich soil
6) B1 - Raw nutritional yeast, fish, green peas, spinach, sunflower
seeds, peanuts, egg-yolk, beans, meat, whole-grains, and legumes,
(destroyed by heat, water soluble)
7) Glutathione - Raw fruits and vegetables, asparagus, avocado, squash,
okra, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, spinach, walnuts, garlic, and
raw tomatoes (destroyed by heat)
8) Vitamin E - All nuts, seeds, and grains, and oils made from them,
(destroyed by iron or copper)
9) Lipoic Acid - Raw broccoli, spinach, and other green leafy
vegetables like collard greens or chard, yeast, animal products,
(destroyed by heat)
10) Vitamin D - Sunshine, cold water fish, egg yolks, some mushrooms if
they have been exposed to sunlight (can create toxic levels if exposed
to sun too long) - Most people need to take a supplement to maintain
adequate levels

Shingles
Epidemic Ahead?
-
From Mercola.com - "As is true with many new and potentially
unnecessary medical interventions used on a widespread basis, there are
often unintended consequences. The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is a
perfect example. By trying to prevent all children from experiencing
chickenpox naturally, this policy may have actually created a NEW
epidemic—not in children but in adults, especially elderly
adults. Vaccinating children for chickenpox may very well be causing a
shingles epidemic."
This is a very big issue. With millions of baby boomers headed for old
age, and rampant inoculations for chicken pox in children, the natural
mechanism for preventing shingles has been eliminated, as described
below.
Mercola.com - "Chickenpox and shingles are related. They are caused by
similar viruses, both in the herpesvirus family. After you recover from
chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant ("asleep") in your nerve roots
for many years, unless it is awakened by some triggering factor such as
physical or emotional stress. When awakened, it presents itself as
shingles rather than chickenpox.
"Shingles is marked by pain and often a blister-like rash on one side
of your body, left or right. Other symptoms can include headache and
flu-like symptoms. Shingles typically runs its course in three to five
weeks."
Exposure to chicken pox is nature's way of strengthening the immune
system against shingles. Now that immunizations have made chicken pox
so rare in children, the older generation is not getting exposed to
chicken pox, leaving them at risk for shingles. It is not likely that
the chicken pox vaccine will be discontinued, so we have to find other
ways to prevent shingles. Keep your immune system strong with adequate
rest, optimal levels of vitamin B12, vitamin D3, avoidance of stress,
and other immune supporting measures.

New
Science for Healthy Bones
-
Cutting-edge research on bone health points to a whole new way of
viewing nutrition for maintaining strong bones. Calcium supplements are
out, and may in fact lead to heart disease, brittle bones, and
arthritis. Magnesium and silica are in, particularly when consumed in
the form of fresh fruits and vegetables.
(NaturalNews.com) "The best foods for building healthy bones are fresh,
raw fruits and vegetables. "When fruits and vegetables are metabolized
they add bicarbonate, an alkaline compound, to the body," said lead
author Dr. Dawson Hughes in a study published in the Journal of
Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 1990. 'Our study found
that
bicarbonate had a favorable effect on bone reabsorption and calcium
excretion. This suggests that increasing the alkali content of the diet
may attenuate bone loss in healthy older adults.'"
If you have been following nutritional news for awhile, you will
already know that countries with the highest consumption of dairy
products have the highest osteoporosis rates, while those with low
dairy intake score much higher on bone density and strength. You may
not have heard, though, that magnesium and silica are important bone
building nutrients, and that calcium supplements can cause
life-threatening arterial plaque and painful deposits in joints.
As always, it is best to get nutrients from fresh, whole foods, but if
you choose to supplement, look for food based supplements like Garden
of Life (Vitamin Code) or New Chapter.

Heat
Zaps Cancer Cells
-
In an article called "Heat treatments can literally destroy cancer
overnight," NaturalNews writer David Gutierrez takes a look at a
potential cure for cancer that Rudolph Steiner suggested decades ago.
It has been awhile since I have read any Steiner, but my recollection
is that he said that cancer is a cold disease and that fever could
eliminate it. Now doctors are simulating fever to cure cancer.
(NaturalNews.com) "Could it be that the ever-growing number of people
developing cancer are doing so because, nowadays, we have fewer
infections and, therefore, fewer fevers?" asks Telegraph columnist
Judith Potts. "Does this mean that the immunization program,
antibiotics and better hygiene have created the cancer monster?"
Interesting hypothesis, but one that will probably not receive a lot of
attention or research, because there is no money to be made from it.
However, there is already some evidence to support it. Infared saunas
have been effectively used to raise body temperature and eliminate
cancer in some patients. Personally, I would give it a try,
particularly since infared saunas are an excellent way to remove toxins
from the body in an enjoyable way.

Taste
Buds in Lungs May Lead to Asthma Cure
-
Asthma is becoming more and more common as a result of air pollution
and poor nutrition, but it may be that a simple cure is on the way.
Scientists have discovered taste buds in the lungs that respond to
bitter flavors by opening congested airways.
(NaturalNews.com) "It turns out that the bitter compounds worked the
opposite way from what we thought. They all opened the airway more
profoundly than any known drug that we have for treatment of asthma or
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)."
This news may be the break that asthma sufferers have been waiting for.
No longer will they have to take dangerous drugs with life-threatening
side effects. A simple bitter tonic may provide relief.
It may be awhile before such treatments become main stream enough that
your local doctor will offer them, but if I had asthma, I would
certainly start experimenting on my own by tasting bitter herbs and
making "do it yourself" nebulizer fourmulas from them. Who knows, you
could be the one to come up with the ultimate asthma remedy.
