Greetings!
I'm hiding my face in shame after getting busted by Getty Images for
accidentally using a couple of their images in the little icons I put
by each article. Beware! If you are publishing anything on the web,
double check to make sure your images are in the public domain, or over
70 years old... or your own creations of course! Otherwise you could
get a very expensive surprise in the mail. Oops!
Moving on to health. Before we can really tackle the health care issue,
we have to tackle the agriculture issue. For some strange reason, the
U.S. government subsidizes foods that are least valuable for health
(meat, dairy, and grains... could it be that they have the most
powerful lobbies?), so more farmers grow those crops and more food
manufacturers base their products on them. Then shoppers on a budget
buy these products, because they are cheaper. But they are not really
cheaper because we have already paid for them with our tax dollars in
the form of farm subsidies!
Then, when people inevitably get sick from eating these acid-forming
and often toxic foods, we dump more tax money into a medical care
system that generally treats symptoms of the diseases we created by
supplying the public with poor quality food in the first place. I
wonder why politicians and doctors are not clamoring for farm subsidies
for organic fruits and vegetables, which should be the staple foods of
any healthy population.
This month we'll take a look at how farm subsidies are fattening
America, deadly dangers of GMO crops and how to avoid them, reasons to
think twice about the birth control pill, arthritis relief, and a
couple of creepy bugs to watch out for. Oh yeah, and good news about
booming sales of certified organic products.

What Is Making America Fatter and Fatter?

Have you noticed that people around you are getting fatter and fatter,
even children? When I think back over the years, the change is dramatic
and shocking. An overweight kid was an anomaly when I was in school.
Now it is quite common. I'm afraid some parents are even beginning to
think it is normal. It is not. It is the result of some really
dangerous government tampering with our nutritional education and food
supplies.
From treehugger.com - "The Farm Bill...governs what children are fed in
schools and what food assistance programs can distribute to recipients.
The bill provides billions of dollars in subsidies, much of which goes
to huge agribusinesses producing feed crops, such as corn and soy,
which are then fed to animals. By funding these crops, the government
supports the production of meat and dairy products--the same products
that contribute to our growing rates of obesity and chronic disease.
Fruit and vegetable farmers, on the other hand, receive less than 1
percent of government subsidies."
Hmm... Isn't it interesting that the main GMO crops are corn and soy.
There's a pattern developing here, and Monsanto is very much involved
in this pattern!
I find it interesting that the medical establishment has been pushing
soy, like it is the cure for everything from heart disease to breast
cancer. However, unless it is eaten in traditional fermented forms like
miso and tamari, it is actually somewhat toxic and very difficult to
digest, which can be the cause of mild to severe food sensitivities and
allergies.
Grains, particularly wheat and corn, are also at the top of the list of
food allergens, along with milk, eggs, peanuts, sugar, coffee, and
alcohol. Refined white flour products are reputed to be the most
fattening foods of all.
Here's a little known fact about why the body stores fat - the more
acidic the body becomes, the more fat it has to store in order to keep
the pH balance of our blood in the narrow range that can support life.
Acid-forming foods are meat, eggs, fish, most grains, pasteurized milk
and its products, most nuts, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, prescription
drugs, over the counter drugs, recreational drugs, all artificial
preservatives and flavorings, sugar, most beans, fried foods, and
pretty much anything you find for sale in a box or bag. Sounds like the
typical American diet, doesn't it?
Alkaline-forming foods are leafy greens, most fruits and vegetables,
most seeds, millet, amaranth, quinoa, black eyed peas, carob, cold
pressed oils. These should be the predominant foods in any healthy
diet. In fact, with the exception of vitamins B12 and D, these foods
supply all the nutrients needed for optimal health, particularly when
eaten raw or sprouted.
Note: Many people are deficient in B12, particularly as they get older,
regardless of their diet. I recommend getting tested and supplementing
with sub-lingual B12 or a B12 patch if your levels are low.
Note: I think I've published enough articles on Vitamin D by now that
you should know you have to supplement if you don't get out in the sun
enough, or if you live north of the latitude of San Francisco. Get
tested and supplement accordingly. Your body will thank you.
When the blood gets overloaded with acids, it is a life-threatening
situation. It quickly eliminates the acids, neutralizes them, or finds
places to store them. If the elimination channels are clogged by
constipation or an overload of toxins, the next best solution is to
neutralize the acids. So your body pulls alkaline calcium out of your
bones to keep the blood pH balanced, which then leads to osteoporosis.
The blood doesn't need the extra calcium after it has neutralized the
acids, so it deposits it in joints or other weak spots, causing calcium
deposits, hardening of the arteries, arthritis and gout, especially if
you are also taking calcium supplements. If you continue dumping
acid-forming foods into your system, the body cannot eliminate or
neutralize them fast enough, so it stores them in fat in order to get
them out of your bloodstream.
Then when you try to "go on a diet" to lose weight, the fat won't
budge, because if it did, it would release all that acid back into your
bloodstream. That would kill you, so your body is doing you a favor by
holding onto the acids and toxins stored in your fat cells. If you want
to lose weight, you have to switch to alkaline-forming foods, so your
body can safely let go of the stored acids without upsetting your blood
pH.

Cows Killed by Eating GMO Corn

not all GM food and feed? Twelve dairy cows died in Hesse, Germany
after being fed Syngenta’s Bt176 GM maize; and other cows had
to be slaughtered due to mysterious illnesses. Protesters in front of
the Robert Koch Institute suspect a cover-up. But is there a news
blackout as well?"
I know it is a real hassle to track down where all your food comes
from, but that is the reality we are living in today. I recently read
an article about a test of GMO corn fed to hamsters. The hamsters that
didn't become sterile gave birth to babies with fur growing inside
their mouths! This stuff is dangerous. Read labels. Buy organic. Grow
your own.
It should be pretty obvious by now that we have to look out for
ourselves and each other, because government agencies, farmers, and
food processors are not stepping up to the plate.

50 Years of the Birth Control Pill

Should You Really Be Taking the Pill? Dr. Mercola doesn't think so. He
offers a lot of reasons why not, as well as natural and safe options
you can use.
From Dr. Mercola's article - "'Eighty percent of U.S. women have used
oral contraceptives, commonly referred to as 'the Pill,' during their
lives, according to research in the Journal of the American College of
Cardiology.
"In my opinion this is a tragedy, as the Pill's major benefit
– convenience -- is largely outweighed by serious health
risks.
"Birth control pills are rarely, if ever, necessary or beneficial. In
exchange for the convenience of preventing pregnancy (which you can do
naturally just as well, and I’ll explain how below), you are
putting yourself at risk of:
* Cancer
* Fatal blood clots
* Thinner bones
* Impaired muscle gains
* Long-term sexual dysfunction
* Heart disease
"These are the more serious, chronic health risks. On top of these,

Good
News! Orgainic Sales Increasing

Even though there is a lot of evidence that Americans are getting
fatter and sicker, there is also a very positive trend of more and more
people demanding organic products.

or even declining, the sales of organic goods increased by 5.3 percent
in 2009.
"A 5.3 percent increase translates into a total of $26.6 billion in
sales throughout 2009, 93 percent of which represented organic food.
"Organic fruits and vegetables represented 38 percent of the total
organic food sales in 2009, or $9.5 billion in sales. This amount is up
11.4 percent from 2008 figures."
That is something to celebrate!

Omega
3 and Glucosamine for Arthritis Relief

According to Dr. Mercola's recent article, there is a synergistic
effect when you combine glucosamine with omega 3 fatty acids (flax oil)
to relieve arthritis symptoms. - "New research shows that omega-3 fats
and glucosamine work together to provide additional benefits for people
with osteoarthritis.
"Scientists gave 1500 mg of glucosamine sulfate to the study
participants, but some also received 200 mg of omega-3 fats. Both
groups had about the same number of participants who reported a 20
percent or less reduction in pain.
"But according to Dr. Christiane Northrup: 'However, when researchers
asked those who experienced an 80 percent reduction in pain, those in
[the glucosamine plus omega-3 group] reported reduced morning stiffness
and pain in the hips and knees by between 48.5 and 55.6 percent,
compared to 41.7 to 55.3 percent for those in [the glucosamine only
group].'”
My take on this is that sticking to a predominantly alkaline diet will
help to prevent arthritis in the first place. Adding omega 3 and
glucosamine to an alkaline diet (including cherries of course) could
speed up recovery from arthritis symptoms.

Deadly New Super Bug

You have probably heard about the new antibiotic-resistant super bugs
that have been breeding in hospitals. They are pretty scary, but
there's a way to combat them. If you keep your gastrointestinal tract
healthy, super bugs will have nowhere to survive in your body.

World Journal of Gastroenterology shows that dietary fiber supports
colonic fermentation so important in keeping beneficial bacteria alive

Could “The Plague” Spread to Humans?

Hundreds of years after the Middle Ages, the words "the plague"
continue to haunt us with images of widespread death and horror. Is
this dreaded disease making a comeback?
According to Dr. Becker who writes pet articles on Dr. Mercola's
website - "Several recent cases of plague among dogs and cats around
New Mexico have public health officials urging people to be wary of a
possible spread to humans.
"Plague is a bacterial disease of rodents generally transmitted to
humans through the bites of infected fleas. It also can be transmitted
by direct contact with infected animals, including pets."
Yikes! That doesn't sound good. Flea season is beginning here in
California. If you have pets, be sure to take measures to keep them
from picking up fleas. I found a good herbal collar with pennyroyal
last summer that worked really well. You can also spread diatomaceous
earth around your house and yard, though it will kill all insects, so
use it sparingly outdoors.
