Health and Your Bliss Point
|
Message
from Bernadette Wulf
-
Greetings!
As the old year closes in the Celtic calendar, it is a time to
reflect on the past year and set forth intentions for the next phase of
life. Maybe the Celtic way appeals to me so much because my birthday
week coincides with their new year. Thousands of years of Celtic
ancestry may also have some influence! Whatever the reason, it feels
like a good time to turn inward to the things that nourish the heart
and soul. In that peaceful inner place there is bliss.
People don't talk much about bliss, in my experience. It almost
seems like a taboo subject. I wonder if that is because it is rare, or
if it just seems too personal to talk about. I suppose bliss is the
motive for drug use, sexual addiction, and even perversions of various
kinds. People are seeking the rush of inner joy that comes with
surrender and living fully in the moment. But we don't need drugs or
perversions to get there. As you will see in the article below, even
junk food can trigger bliss.
Seems like all sorts of "vices" provide glimpses of bliss, hence
their appeal, but what about healthy ways to get there? Could it be
that music holds a key? Recent studies have been focused on particular
notes of the scale and how they affect our brains and even our DNA. I
found that listening to the 528 hertz recording (link below) shifted me
into bliss mode. Have a listen and see if it does the same for you.
I spend a lot of time in a state of bliss, so I can usually shift
into it pretty easily. The neural pathways are well worn. I believe
bliss is always there inside of us, ready to be discovered as soon as
we drop the left-brain mind chatter and slip fully into the now.
I got a lot of flack for posting an article on "The Power of Now" a
year or two ago, but (whether you liked the book or not) I have found
that now is the only time that we really have any power, and it is
certainly the only time we can find bliss. And when we do find it, the
body begins to vibrate in harmony, and the flow of, what we call in
Reiki, "Universal Life Force Energy" resonates in every cell. That's
got to be healing!
On a more mundane level, we'll take a look at the healing power of
olive oil, one of the essential ingredients in the healthful
Mediterranean diet. And we'll wrap up with an article on the
happiness-boosting power of full spectrum light.
Happy Halloween, Samhain, All Saints Day, and El Día de los
Muertos. Take a moment to honor those who have gone before us and
shaped the world we have inherited. Then think about what kind of world
you want to leave behind for those who will come after us. Gives life a
different perspective, doesn't it?
To Your Health!

Junk
Food Almost as Addictive as Heroin!
-
I suppose everyone knows by now that "junk food" is not very good
for us, but a recent study shows that it can even become addictive!
Three groups of rats (why do they always do this stuff to poor little
rats?) were given either healthy food, limited junk food, or unlimited
junk food. The unlimited junk food group developed the habit of binging
and of course got fat, but the other two groups appeared to remain
normal.
From Telegraph.co.uk, "When researchers electronically stimulated
the part of the brain that feels pleasure, they found that the rats on
unlimited junk food needed more and more stimulation to register the
same level of pleasure as the animals on healthier diets."
The need for more stimulation and the loss of control (binging) are
signs of addiction.
In a related article by Ben Leach titled "Why Junk Food is
Addictive", also from Telegraph.co.uk, the reason for this phenomenon
is explored. He quotes Professor Kessler, ex-commissioner of the US
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - "'The right combination of tastes
triggers a greater number of neurons, getting them to fire more,' he
said. 'The message to eat becomes stronger, motivating the eater to
look for even more food.
'''Many of us have what's called a 'bliss point' – the point
at
which we get the greatest pleasure from sugar, fat or salt. As more
sugar [and fat or salt] is added, food becomes more pleasurable until
we reach the bliss point, after which it becomes too sweet and the
pleasure drops off.'"
Who wouldn't want to go for the bliss point over and over again? We
naturally seek sugars, fats, and salt, because they are necessary for
survival. That's why we have developed a strong pleasure response to
them. The problem is that junk foods separate sugar, fat, and salt from
natural whole foods, so we don't get the vitamins, minerals, proteins,
and phyto-nutrients that were originally included. We are left with a
lot of empty calories and added chemical preservatives and flavorings
that fool our taste buds into "thinking" they are getting real food.
Our cells, on the other hand, are not getting the nutrients they need
so they send out signals telling us to eat more and more.
The best way out of any addiction is usually "cold turkey." Just
quit. Replace junk foods with fresh fruits, vegetables, leafy greens,
nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, and small amounts of animal products
if you are so inclined. You will find that after awhile junk foods
don't even taste good anymore. Sodas are way too sweet, as are most
commercial deserts. Greasy fried foods lose their appeal, and white
flour products begin to taste like cardboard.
At first you will crave the old habits, as in any addiction, but in
time they will lose their appeal. Not that you can't have a dish of ice
cream or a few fries now and then, once you have broken the addiction
cycle. It's all about moderation!
And if you are looking for healthier ways to reach that bliss
point, try meditation, long walks in the woods, hugs and kisses, or a
hot bath.

DNA
Repair with 528 Hertz
-
Does the name Jezebel Decibel ring a bell? (Ugh... sorry about
that. She probably gets that all the time.) I had never heard of her
until a friend posted her abundanthope.net article on Facebook. I
thought it was pretty interesting.
The notes of the scale have a particular resonance that affects our
bodies in different ways, according to this article. They are even
related to the pillars of the Kabalistic tree of life (see image).
* "UT - 396 Hz -associated with releasing emotional patterns after: see
RE-417Hz below.
* RE - 417 Hz -associated with breaking up crystallized emotional
patterns
* MI - 528 Hz - relates to crown chakra; Dr. Puleo suggests an
association with "DNA integrity" Transformation and Miracles
* FA - 639 Hz - associated with whole brain quadrant
interconnectedness. Connecting Relationships
* SOL - 741 Hz - associated with intuitive states, non linear knowing.
Awakening Intuition
* LA - 852 Hz - associated with a pure love frequency: unconditional
love and returning to Spiritual Order"
I assume UT is what most of us know as DO, but I'm not sure about
that, and I don't know why she didn't include TI (a drink with jam and
bread?). That's probably why my brief musical career floundered, but I
have always been fascinated by the idea of sound healing. It makes
sense, since we are all made of vibrating energy, that particular
vibrations in the sound range would affect the energy of our bodies in
particular ways.
Jezebel Decibel's article says, "The third note, frequency 528,
relates to the note MI on the scale and derives from the phrase "MI-ra
gestorum" in Latin meaning "miracle." Stunningly, this is the exact
frequency used by genetic biochemists to repair broken DNA - the
genetic blueprint upon which life is based!"
Scientists are discovering the most amazing things these days. If
this can possibly repair DNA, I'll give it a try. I don't even know if
my DNA needs repair, but at my age it probably does.

Heal
Your DNA
-
I listened to a few different 528 hertz recordings, some of which
were quite annoying. This one was actually pleasant to listen to, and I
think that must be important, too. My DNA is smiling. In fact, I think
I've found a new way to reach my bliss point! Sure beats junk food.

Olive
Oil High in Antioxidants
-
The Mediterranean diet is said to be the healthiest in the world,
partly because of its abundant use of olive oil. What makes olive oil
so healthful? Probably the most publicized thing about olive oil is
that it is an excellent source of monounsaturated fat which is
important for lowering cholesterol levels. But did you know that olive
oil is also a good source of antioxidants?
According to a recent NaturalNews article, "...olive oil -
particularly extra virgin olive oil - is very high in antioxidants, one
in particular called DHPEA-EDA. When researchers exposed red blood
cells under oxidative stress to this and other antioxidants, they found
that the DHPEA-EDA provided the best 'stress-alleviation,' if you will,
fighting off the free radicals to a greater extent than the three other
antioxidant compounds used in the study."
It would have been nice to know what the other antioxidants were,
but even so, it sounds like olive oil provides great antioxidant value.
Not only that, olive oil shows promise in preventing Alzheimer's
disease. The same article goes on to say, "Writing in the journal
Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, researchers said the oleocanthal
in olive oil binds to toxic proteins that clog the synapses on the
hippocampus, which is the first sign of Alzheimer's disease onset. The
hippocampus is the section of the brain that's most adversely affected
by Alzheimer's disease."
All in all, there is a lot of good nutrition in the humble olive!
Recommended dose is two tablespoons of olive oil per day. Olive oil
should be stored in a cool, dark place in order to preserve its
antioxidant value.

The
Light of Happiness
-
Sunshine is much more than just a source of vitamin D. The full
spectrum of light provided by the sun also affects the chemical balance
in our brains. Many people are affected by SAD (Seasonal Affective
Disorder) as the nights grow longer and the cold weather keeps us
indoors, but there are easy ways to counteract this problem. In her
latest newsletter, Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman offers tips for staying
happy through the dark winter months.
"1. Spend at least 20 minutes a day outside—without
sunglasses—to
allow the sun’s full-spectrum light to enter your pupils.
Just don’t do
this at midday or look directly at the sun.
2. Replace all gas discharge lights (mercury vapor, sodium vapor,
and limited-spectrum fluorescent lights) with full-spectrum lights.
They’re available in supermarkets and even as recessed
ceiling lights.
3. Sit in front of or under full-spectrum lights (or a light box)
at the same time every day, but don’t look directly at the
lights.
Choose a time that works best for your schedule, so you can follow this
routine regularly."
I have a full spectrum desk lamp over my computer, so I get full
spectrum light whenever I'm working. I have another one for my macaw,
because pets need full spectrum light, too. Take a look at where you
spend a lot of time and add full spectrum lighting to those areas. It
could make the difference between depression and bliss!
