Greetings!
I can't believe it is already June, with the Summer Solstice right
around the corner! My photographer friend Ben Aronoff took this photo
of me at my daughter's wedding last weekend. They had a Great Gatsby
theme, hence the hat. Aside from getting way too little sleep, I had a
glorious time. It was wonderful to spend a weekend in the mountains
with so many friends and family members.
This month we have a fun little article about the surprising
effects of weight gain on the environment, a couple of unique stroke
treatments, good news about the effect of pomegranate juice on the
prostate, and homeopathic remedies for the flu. All good stuff to know
about BEFORE symptoms appear. You never know when you might meet
someone who could benefit from your knowledge, or your well-stocked
medicine cabinet.
I was listening to an economic expert on the radio last night and
he said that we are in for a couple more years of economic downturn.
According to him it will not be as bad as the great depression, but the
worst is not over yet. While that may not sound like a good thing on
first hearing, it occurred to me that it may be a positive cleansing
process very much like an economic cold or flu. Just like when our
bodies get overloaded with toxins, we "catch" a cold or flu to help us
clear out the waste.
It looks to me like our monetary system is riddled with corruption
and it certainly needs a good cleansing, so I'm looking at the economic
turmoil in a very positive light. It is a healing crisis on a
world-wide level. Meanwhile, I believe that we can each manifest
abundance in our own individual lives, no matter what is going on
around us, by maintaining a positive attitude.
Positive thoughts do more than make us happy. They allow our bodies
to heal and our external circumstances to continually improve. It is
only when we get caught up in negative thoughts and feelings that we
push against the tide of our own well-being. We all do it from time to
time, but the trick is to notice and then remember to find things that
make us feel good. When we feel good, we are aligned with the natural
flow of the Universe that brings us everything we need.
I know there are skeptics out there, probably even on my mailing
list, but I challenge anyone to put it to the test. Just try to focus
only on what makes you feel good, for a day or a week or a month. It
may not be easy at first, but it will get to be a habit after awhile.
If you learn to do this, I guarantee that you will create a bubble of
health, abundance, and well-being around yourself.
To Your Health!

One
More Reason to Lose Weight
-
I had never thought about it before, but it is true that
automobiles have to burn more gasoline to carry more weight. According
to this article, the growing obesity rate in America is adding to our
fuel consumption. To put it bluntly, as the human population gets
fatter, our cars have to work harder.
According to the Simple.ology Newsletter, "Jacobson and McLay
pointed out that the average American's weight increased by more than
24 pounds over the time period covered by their data. According to
them, this means that we use up 'at least 938 million more gallons [of
gas] than we did in 1960.'"
That is pretty shocking! Not only are we creating a health-care
time bomb with all the junk food consumption in America, the resultant
weight gain is also wasting a lot of gas and adding to environmental
pollution.
Here's a simple solution. Get out of the cars and walk more! Of
course, it is also important to avoid overeating and chemical-laden
foods, especially diet sodas, MSG, and most packaged foods. Best of
all, grow your own fruits and veggies and enjoy working in your garden.

Tai Chi Treatment for Stroke Damage
-
Several years ago I took a tai chi class at the local recreation
center. I found it to be very enjoyable and my teacher was inspiring.
He believed that tai chi could cure just about anything. The really
cool thing about it is that almost anyone can do it, regardless of age.
Even people in their 90s will benefit from this gentle form of
exercise. So it didn't surprise me to read this NaturalNews article on
tai chi for stroke damage.
From NaturalNews.com "The tai chi group did particularly better in
conditions that required them to use their balance control," Hui-Chan,
professor and head of physical therapy at UIC, said in a statement to
the media. "In only six weeks, we saw significant improvements. The
ability to shift your weight is very important because all reaching
tasks require it."
One problem with strokes is that they can affect the ability to
balance, which can lead to dangerous falls. Tai chi appears to improve
balance dramatically and it is easy to do, once you learn the basic
movements.
I also read once, that if stroke victims view themselves in the
mirror while performing daily tasks, their recovery rate is much faster
than normal. Because a stroke tends to damage a particular part of the
brain, the mirror viewing stimulates the opposite side of the brain to
somehow compensate for the damage. Imagine if they did tai chi in front
of a mirror!

Music
Improves Vision after Stroke
-
Here's another interesting tidbit about strokes. Many times stroke
victims find that their vision on one side has been affected, but
recent experiments show that music can help to repair the damage. Or is
it really the music? One theory is that it is actually the positive
feelings stimulated by listening to enjoyable music that brings about
healing.
From NaturalNews.com "What caused the improvement in visual
awareness seen in these patients? The researchers think it could be a
result of the research subjects experiencing positive emotions when
listening to favorite music. The scientists looked at functional MRI
scans to see how the patients' brains functioned during the different
tasks. They found that when tasks were performed to pleasant music,
areas in the brain linked to positive emotional responses from stimuli
were activated. At the same time, the patients' awareness of the visual
world was improved."
My guess is that the healing comes from a combination of factors.
There are particular vibrations of sound that stimulate healing, as
used by sound healers the world over. If these tones are included in
the music stroke victims listen to, they could be partly responsible
for the improvement shown.
However, we also know that positive emotions bring about healing,
as I mentioned in the introduction. So it is essential that music be
enjoyable to the listener, the more enjoyable the better. Isn't it
wonderful that the things we enjoy most are the most healing of all?

Pomegranate
Juice Slows Prostate Cancer
-
That wonderful pomegranate again! We keep finding out more good
things about it. In recent studies it has been shown to slow the
development of prostate cancer when medical treatments are not working.
It would be interesting to see statistics on prostate cancer in the
Middle East where pomegranate juice is consumed regularly.
"(NaturalNews) There's new hope for men with prostate cancer when
their disease doesn't respond adequately to standard medical care.
According to the results of a long-term study presented this week at
the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological
Association (AUA) held in Linthicum, Maryland, pomegranate juice may
effectively slow the progression of the disease, even when regular
treatment has failed."
Personally, I would try the pomegranate juice before the regular
medical treatment, but since I don't have a prostate I'll leave that
decision to the gentlemen. On the other hand, pomegranate is good for
us ladies, too. Rich in antioxidants and oh so delicious, pomegranate
is a healthy treat we can all enjoy.

Ten
Homeopathic Remedies for the Flu
-
In my ongoing effort to relieve concern about the dangers of swine
flu, I am including this article about the best homeopathic remedies to
keep on hand in case of an outbreak. Experts predict that this flu may
return in the fall in a more virulent form. Of course, nobody really
knows for sure, because flu viruses mutate unpredictably.
Whether a flu pandemic materializes or not, it is always good to
have a first-aid kit stocked with a variety of homeopathic remedies.
Arnica Montana is a good one to have on hand for sprains and bruises. I
carry it in my purse and have often given it to people who were bumped
or bruised in falls or accidents. At one time I gave it to a football
player and he soon converted his whole team to the use of Arnica!
Apis is another remedy I always carry, because I am allergic to bee
stings. It brings down swelling and itching like magic. It even clears
some poison oak symptoms, as I discovered a few years ago, much to my
relief!
As with all homeopathic remedies, these are prescribed according to
symptoms rather than disease diagnosis. People may have different
symptoms from the same disease or at different stages of a disease, so
it is important to read the list of symptoms before choosing a remedy.
You will find a brief list of symptoms for each of the following
remedies when you read the entire article. You may want to print it out
for future reference, or better yet, get a book on homeopathy.
1. Ferrum Phos (can be alternated with Natrum Sulf)
2. Dulcamara
3. Nux vomica
4. Gelsemium
5. Arsenicum
6. Bryonia
7. Rhus tox
8. Belladonna
9. Eupatorium
10. Baptisia
These are the ten remedies most often used for flu. The remedies
found most useful in the flu outbreak of the 1800s were Gelsemium and
Bryonia. As I recall from my previous newsletter, only 1% of people
treated with homeopathy died in that outbreak (and 0% in homeopathic
hospitals), while something like 35% of those treated with mainstream
medicine died.
That's pretty good odds for homeopathy! Best of all, it is one of
the most harmless and least invasive forms of medicine. Homeopathy is
always my first line of defense in any health challenge.
