Greetings!

STOP! Don't buy into the swine flu pandemic scare. I know. I know. It's in all the papers, all over the internet, and on TV and radio news. You can't really get away from the media coverage, but you CAN choose how you respond to it. How about ignoring it?

The worst possible response is to go into FEAR, because fear activates all the negative stress hormones that undermine health and immunity. The best response is to tell yourself, "This doesn't have anything to do with me. My body is healthy and my immune system is strong." And then take a moment to appreciate all the signs that your body IS strong and healthy.

Even if you are not feeling perfect, focus on the parts that DO feel good. Can you walk? Can you talk? Can you laugh? Can you get into a comfortable position? If not, go back to something you CAN do, something that DOES feel good, and stay focused on that as much as possible. You will be amazed at how your body can heal itself of absolutely any condition or disease if you simply focus on what is working right and what is feeling good.

As Abraham says, "Don't seek healing, just seek relief."

The whole reason I put out this newsletter every month is to remind you that you have power over your own health. You are the one with that power, not doctors or government agencies. And, even though most of the articles are about food and nutrition, it isn't really about nutrition at all. It's about you.

I want you to believe that you have the tools you need to create and maintain ideal health no matter what your age or circumstances, because that BELIEF is the bottom line. Even though you may not understand how your body works, you can still guide it with your thoughts. Scientists are now proving that our cells respond to our thoughts and beliefs. Our DNA and genes are actually changed by thought!

So I urge you to think about things that make you smile, things that bring tears of joy to your eyes, things that feel empowering, and things that feel really really good to think about. Talk about those things, do those things, and share those things with others. You'll find that when you do that, your life will take off in the most inspiring and uplifting way you can imagine. You will be immune to every disease, abundant in every way, and fulfilled as you explore the wonders of each moment.

What do you think? Is it possible to have total immunity to every disease, no matter what epidemic, pandemic, or other "demic" they send your way? And why is it that some people are totally unscathed by plagues and epidemics, others get sick but survive, and others die? Could it be that some people have a sort of protective bubble around them?

I won't pretend I know the answers to all those questions, but I do know that there is a lot we can do to strengthen the immune system and sidestep the various bugs that sweep through our communities. I've been in many situations where everyone around me came down with a cold or flu while I never had any symptoms. I was breathing the same air, eating in the same restaurants, flying in the same airplanes, but I didn't get sick.

I have come up with some pretty good ways to stay healthy in the midst of summer cold season, winter flu season, or whatever other disease season the media moguls would like us to freak out about. I feel like I have my own little immunity bubble, and I'm learning how to improve it all the time.

The first key is to keep your system on the alkaline side by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Viruses thrive in an acidic environment! (See article below.)

Also important:

- Keep your body well hydrated by drinking at least half your body weight in ounces every day. (i. e. if you weigh 120lbs. you should drink 60 oz. water)

- Take a good food-based multi-vitamin like Vitamin Code or Chapter One.

- Have Elderberry syrup on hand, shown to be effective flu fighter.

- Good quality echinacia is a proven immune system booster. (Don't overload when you are not sick or you may trigger such a strong immune reaction that you could get really sick!)

- Vitamin C (I prefer EmergenC) will help keep your immune system working at its best

- Wash hands frequently with normal soap and avoid touching eyes, because the mucous membranes of the eyes have been shown to absorb bacteria and viruses.

- And of course homeopathic Oscillococcinum should be at your fingertips so you can take it the moment you or anyone around you has any flu-like symptoms.

By the way, homeopathy was very effective in treating flu during the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. Those treated by homeopathic physicians had mortality rate of only 1.05 percent, but 30 percent of people treated with traditional medicine and drugs died! 100 percent of people treated in homeopathic hospitals survived.

The homeopathic remedies most used to successfully treat the Spanish flu were Gelsemium and Bryonia. So you might want to keep them on hand. There is no specific homeopathic remedy for flu. The remedy is selected according to the symptoms.

According to flu expert, Dr. J. E. Williams, the best preventative supplements are:

- Beta Glucans - immune system stimulant

- Zinc - 15-30 mg. per day when well - 45-100 mg. per day if sick.

- Vitamin C - 1000 mg. - 3X per day. More if sick.

- Vitamin A - aqueous formula.

- Quercetin is very important to relieve inflamation, particularly for healthy young people with strong immune systems. Dr. Williams says that death from flu is not caused by the virus, but by the strong response of the immune system causing life-threatening inflamation.

- In dry climates a humidifier will also help to protect the mucus membranes from damage.

Here are some more tips from Dr. Michael Carlston, our local holistic M.D.:

"- Vitamin D3 – keep your blood levels over 50, or simply take 3-5,000 iu/day for the next month (this is not a quick fix, but should be part of your regular maintenance program)

- Vitamin C - take 2-3,000 mg per day

- Mixed natural carotenoids (50,000 iu/day)

Herbs -Andrographis, Echinacea (purpurea and angustifolia – remember that if echinacea does not make your tongue tingle when you bite it, it is not of good quality), Shitake mushroom"

Be prepared, as the boy scouts say. Then relax and enjoy your good health.

You can throw away your arthritis medicine once you learn that life really is a bowl of cherries. It only takes a handful a day to keep the arthritis doctor away. A daily dose of six to eight cherries has proved to eliminate the pain and swelling of arthritis and gout! Doesn't that sound a lot better than a handful of PILLS? And they don't even have to be fresh. You can eat them out of a can, or take a tablespoon of cherry concentrate to get the same results.

Personally, I would avoid the canned variety because of the heavy metals used in the cans. The article doesn't mention frozen cherries, but I bet they would work just as well. You could also try bottled cherry juice, or how about cherry pie?

From Natural News - "As you'll see in the collection of quotes about cherries, gout and arthritis (click link below), cherries are extremely safe, effective and fast-acting for eliminating swelling and pain. Eating just a few cherries a day keeps uric acid levels in check, preventing any recurrence of gout.

Spirulina - Great Source of Vitamins & Minerals

(NaturalNews) "Spirulina is considered one of nature's most perfect foods because it performs such a broad spectrum of activities in the body. Its nutritional profile shows it can replace many more expensive supplements, and its research profile reveals its dedication to promoting good health."

While I would have to question the idea that Spirulina is "dedicated" to promoting health, it has certainly been used for that purpose for centuries, all the way back to the ancient Aztecs, in fact. Spirulina has been shown to improve symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, high blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, digestion, cancer, inflammation, and auto-immune diseases. It is also an immune system booster.

The Natural News article goes on to say, "Spirulina is sustainable food, offering more nutrition per acre than any other food. It is able to provide 20 times more complete protein per acre than soybeans, and 200 times more per acre than beef. It contains the eight essential amino acids as well as ten non-essential amino acids, making it an excellent choice for anyone not consuming animal protein. It is rich in enzymes, chlorophyll, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and phosphorous. It is rich in B complex vitamins including B6, biotin, B12, pantothenic acid, folic acid, inositol, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine. It is a good source of essential fatty acids, including linoleic, and arachidonic acid. Spirulina contains 4,000 mg/kg of carotenoids..."

In short, it packs a big nutritional wallop! Word of warning, it can be constipating in high doses, so make sure to drink lots of water and eat plenty of fiber when including spirulina in your diet. Also, even though the article says sprulina supplies B12, tests have shown that it does not supply the minimum requirement.

Spirulina can be added to soups, smoothies, salad dressings, or any other dish. It has a mild seaweed-like flavor and a bright green color that will dominate any dish to which it is added. It will also act as a thickener. Think of it as a very concentrated food and don't overdo it. Also available in tablets and capsules.

Alkalizing Your Blood?

The good news is that your blood is going to stay alkaline no matter what - or you would die. The other news is that the rest of your body needs lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain a slightly alkaline balance. Otherwise, the blood will take the alkaline minerals out of bones and tissues to maintain its own balance (i. e. calcium, magnesium). So your job is to make sure there are plenty of alkaline minerals to go around.

Natural News - "Generally speaking, most vegetables and fruits have an alkaline-forming effect on your body fluids.

"Most grains, animal foods, and highly processed foods have an acid-forming effect on your body fluids.

"Your health is best served by a good mix of nutrient-dense, alkaline and acid-forming foods; ideally, you want to eat more alkaline-forming foods than acid-forming foods to have the net acid and alkaline-forming effects of your diet match the slightly alkaline pH of your blood."

Because the average American has already been eating a highly acid-forming diet for many years, most of us need to eat even more fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, to resupply the alkaline minerals we were born with. However becoming overly alkaline is also very detrimental to your health, so don't go on a radical alkaline diet in an attempt to compensate.

Trust your body. Listen to your food cravings. Make sure the cravings are not coming from emotional discomfort by getting into a relaxed, happy state of mind. Then let your appetite tell you what your body needs. Any fresh whole foods are fair game.
