Greetings!
It's amazing how good it feels to clear out clutter! Not that I'm
finished by any means, but that just makes it all the more obvious. The
neat and tidy room feels so much more inviting and peaceful than my
office with its piles of books and papers that need sorting.
I see the amount of clutter as a metaphor for life. Too many
projects and activities can be overwhelming, but it is easy to let them
pile up. As we move into the season of Spring, it's a good time to do
some Spring cleaning, not only in our homes and offices, but also in
setting priorities for the way we spend our time. That's what I'm up
to.
This month we'll take a look at some of the popular hype about soy.
It's not all it is cracked up to be - unless it's fermented. Miso soup
is one of the best ways to get the benefits of fermented soy without
the negative effects. In fact, it could be included in anyone's list of
super-foods. Read about miso in our last article.
Did you know that energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
contain highly toxic mercury? They are great for saving energy, but we
have to use extra caution when handling and disposing of them. Which
brands are safest? Do you know what to do if one breaks? Read on.
We are surrounded by electronic pollution. Our third article will
show you an easy way to detect high EMF levels so you can avoid the
worst of it.
By the way, cell phones are a major contributor of electronic
pollution, as you'll see in the fourth article. They are great for
emergencies, but a land line is much safer for general use - and that
means a receiver with a WIRE attached. Wireless receivers have been
shown to emit even more EMFs than cell phones! Use a speaker phone
instead and keep wireless devices as far away from your body as
possible!
It's a crazy maze of toxic technology out there, but with a bit of
diligence we can walk through it unscathed. Do what you can to avoid
the worst, and then forget about it. A positive attitude will keep you
in the pink of health - and don't forget the miso soup. It has been
shown to protect people from radiation poisoning!
To Your Health!

Fermented
Soy - The Only Way To Go!
-
From Natural News - "Unfermented soy has been linked to digestive
distress, immune system breakdown, PMS, endometriosis, reproductive
problems for men and women, allergies, ADD and ADHD, higher risk of
heart disease and cancer, malnutrition, and loss of libido."
Why then are so many "health" articles promoting soy milk, soy
protein, and other unfermented soy products? As is often the case, they
haven't done their research. Soy has been a staple food in Asia for
3,000 years, but only in fermented forms - miso, soy sauce, natto, and
tempeh.
Another popular soy food in Asia is tofu. However, tofu is not
fermented and high intake may be hazardous to your health. The article
goes on to say, "A decade ago a study of 8,000 Asian men showed that
those consuming the highest amounts of tofu had smaller brain size and
nearly three times the rate of senile dementia as those who ate the
lowest amounts. These results suggest that eating foods high in
isoflavones such as soy protein isolates may accelerate the aging of
the brain."
Many vegans and vegetarians rely on tofu for protein, but there are
much better sources found in raw leafy greens, nuts, and seeds. It is
impossible to become protein deficient on a varied whole-foods diet,
especially if you include lots of raw foods.
"When fermented soy foods are used in small amounts they help build
the inner ecosystem, providing a wealth of friendly microflora to the
intestinal tract that can help with digestion and assimilation of
nutrients, and boost immunity." About an ounce of fermented soy food
per day is common in China and Japan to maintain ideal health.
So next time you are shopping for soy, make sure it's fermented!

Guide
to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
-
It seems that the easy answer to saving energy comes with a high
cost. Compact fluorescent bulbs contain deadly mercury! That means we
have to be extra careful when handling and disposing of them.
From the Environmental Working Group - "DON'T use CFLs where
mercury exposure is unacceptable or cleanup is difficult --- children's
rooms, playrooms, recreation rooms, workbenches and near irreplaceable
rugs and furniture.
CHOOSE the best bulb for the job. Some CFLs take several minutes
before they reach full brightness and efficiency -- a safety risk for
hallways/stairs and a nuisance in closets. For these fixtures, look for
CFLs with "instant on" technology or consider investing in LED (light
emitting diodes) technology.
USE mercury-free bulbs such as LED (light emitting diodes) or
halogen energy savers where CFLs aren't ideal or breakages are likely."
If you want to light a place where the risk of using compact
fluorescent bulbs is low, you will want to find the safest bulbs with
the lowest amount of mercury. EWG has done the work for you by listing
the best bulbs on the market:
"An Environmental Working Group investigation has identified 7 bulb
lines made by Earthmate, Litetronics, Sylvania, Feit, MaxLite and
Philips that trump the rest. These bulbs, listed in our Green Lighting
Guide contain a fraction of the toxic mercury allowed by Energy Star,
reducing the mercury contamination from a broken bulb."
I won't keep you in suspense. The winners for the two lowest mercury
bulbs are:
Earthmate Mini-Size Bulbs (13, 15, 20, & 23 Watt) - about 1 mg
mercury - 10,000 hours - buy from:
http://www.energyfederation.org/consumer/default.php/cPath/25_44_3006
More info. - http://www.earthmatelighting.com/faq.php
Litetronics Neolite (10, 13, 15, 20, & 23 Watt) - about 1 mg -
10,000 hours - buy from:
http://www.1000bulbs.com/search.php?search_data=Neolite&cat=%22%22&x=0&y=0
For the other five, you'll have to follow the link at the bottom of
this article.

There is a lot of great information on the EWG website. I hope you will
check it out and pass it on to others.

Ten Ways to Avoid EMF Pollution
-
We've all heard about EMFs and electronic pollution, but most of us
do not have the fancy equipment to detect harmful electronic pollution
from our common appliances. Here's a great article describing the
dangers of EMFs and how to avoid them. You can use an ordinary
transistor radio as an EMF dectector! Here are instructions -
From Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, M.D. - "You can also check for
electrical pollution by taking a small, handheld radio and tuning it to
500 AM, usually the lowest possible frequency on the dial. Turn up the
volume and you'll hear a noise. Then, bring the radio close to
electrical equipment, like dimmer switches, fax machines, computers,
microwave ovens, telephones, and compact fluorescent bulbs. When you
bring the radio close to a source of electrical energy, the noise
coming from the radio will likely increase, which indicates electrical
pollution."
Ten Simple ways to protect yourself:
1. Replace dimmer switches with regular switches.
2. Replace halogen lamps with regular light bulbs. (Hm - The
previous article said to replace regular light bulbs with compact
fluorescents and to use Halogen lamps where CFLs were a danger. Seems
like LED lights might be best all the way around. Is there something
bad about THEM?)
3. Remove or bypass variable speed drives on heating and cooling
systems.
4. Replace "touch lamps," wireless plug-in jacks, compact
fluorescent lights (CFLs), and fluorescent bulbs with electronic
ballasts.
5. Don't buy a plasma TV. If you already have one stay as far away from
it as possible.
6.Make sure that any new electronics you buy already have harmonic
noise filters installed.
7. Position electrical equipment on outside walls so that radiation
isn't projected into other rooms of your home or office.
8. Avoid electronics in areas around beds. Keep electronic
equipment, including your digital alarm clock, at least six feet from
your bed.
9. Unplug electrical appliances when they're not in use and use power
strips that you can turn off.
10. Don't hold your cell phone against your head, especially if you
use it a lot. Switch sides to reduce exposure on any one side. Wireless
devices, like Bluetooth technology (and ordinary wireless phone
receivers), can also increase EMF exposure, so it's better to use
speakers or a headset. (Not all headsets are safe. Here's a link to a
safe cell phone headset -

Disorientied
Driving with Hands-Free Cell Phones
-
Here we go again on the cell phone issue. It is clear that there is
a connection between cell phone use and driving accidents, but it looks
like the hands-free devices are not really any better than holding a
phone to your head!
From Natural News - "Government research has discovered that any
cell phone use, including hands free, causes a disorientation which may
increase the risk of accidents. This disorientation can last up to 10
minutes after the phone call is finished.
"Cell phone use was compared to conversation with another person in
the car. This was shown to have no disorienting effects, indicating
that conversation itself does not interfere with driving ability. On
the other hand, cell phone activity appears to affect concentration,
reaction and focused attention."
Could it be that EMFs are affecting brain function? That's my
guess. More research is needed. Meanwhile, turn off your phone when
driving. Your brain will thank you - and so will the other drivers on
the road.

Miso
Soup - Delicious Anti-Aging Elixir
-
For those who haven't tried miso soup, you're in for a treat. Not
only is it delicious, it aids in digestion, and protects from the
effects of radiation. Japanese who regularly drank miso soup had far
less radiation damage after exposure to atomic bomb fallout in WWII.
With all the electronic radiation we are exposed to in the modern
world, miso soup should be a staple food in every household!
Miso soup is easy to make. The most important thing is to add the
miso AFTER removing the water from the stove, so you preserve the
beneficial enzymes and microflora. Just boil a few cups of water, add a
handful of finely chopped vegetables. Remove from heat.
Then remove about a cup of broth, let it cool to 115 degrees or
less, and mix in a few tablespoons of miso. Mix this back into main pot
or broth. Walla! Miso soup. It still tastes good if you add the miso to
hotter broth, but you lose many of the benefits.
Here is a traditional Japanese recipe from Natural News -
"Traditional miso soup is quick and easy to prepare. Its health
benefits are legendary, making chicken soup pale in comparison.
Ingredients:
5-inch strip wakame (sea vegetable), or 2 teaspoons dried wakame
1 large onion (about 1 cup)
4 cups water
2 to 8 Tablespoons light miso depending on the richness desired
Instructions:
Soak the wakame in water for 10 minutes and slice into 1.5 inch pieces.
Thinly slice onions.
Put water, onions and wakame in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 10-20 minutes, until tender.
Remove 1.5 cups of broth from the saucepan and place in a bowl.
Allow water in the bowl to cool a bit and add the miso, mixing it
into the water (the water should be cooled to a temperature of 105
degrees or lower so the beneficial microflora and enzymes in the miso
remain in tact).
Turn off heat, allowing the remaining water in the saucepan to also
cool to 105 degrees or below. When it has cooled, add the miso broth to
the soup in the saucepan. Add chopped parsley, green onions, ginger or
watercress for garnish.
