Greetings!
Happy 2009! Another year to get healthier, happier, and closer to
your ideal life. Is that the way you are thinking about it, or are you
caught up in media stories about lack and limitation? Where will you
put your focus in this new year?
Remember that your thoughts are like the guidance system of an
airplane. Wherever your thoughts are pointed is where you will end up!
So keep your thoughts focused on your goals, rather than on the
obstacles in the way.
To that end, I hope you find lots of useful tips here to help you
sort through the maze of health-related information out there. My
intention is to find the best objective articles available with fun and
fascinating facts to support your empowerment as a healthy, informed
individual.
It is interesting that science is uncovering more and more
statistical information to support our health and healing, even while
it creates most of the toxins responsible for our health challenges!
(Though cattle may be a close runner up.) Meanwhile, the old, tried and
true remedies usually turn out to be the best.
The black pepper found on just about every dinner table is now said
to increase the bioavailability of herbs and foods. Nuts and seeds rise
to the top of the list as potent cancer fighters. Coltsfoot and Mullein
keep curing coughs. And good old Hydrogen Peroxide is sited as a cold
and flu preventative.
That brings me to my trite cliche for the new year, "There's nothing
new under the sun."

Pepper Increases Nutrient Absorption

Natural News - "Piperine is a pungent compound found in the fruit
of the plants in the Piperaceae family, the most famous member of which
is Piper nigrum, black pepper. It has a long history of use in
Ayurvedic medicine as a restorative and treatment.
"Piperine can turn a marginally effective therapeutic substance
into a highly effective one by increasing its bioavailability and
intracellular residency time. As an example, piperine can increase the
bioavailability of the cancer, inflammation, and infection fighter,
curcumin, by twenty-fold."
Imagine that! All these years we've been told to avoid black
pepper, because it is irritating, and now there is evidence that it can
actually enhance the beneficial properties of our foods. No wonder it
is so popular! We intuitively knew it was good for us.

IP6
- Another Promising Cancer Fighter
-
According to a recent Natural News article, IP6 is "a powerful
antioxidant, immune system enhancer, and booster of natural killer
cells. Foods that are significant sources of IP6 include dried beans,
whole grains, nuts, seeds, rice, wheat germ, corn and sesame."
In other words, IP6 is found in seeds, so it is important to
include seeds in the daily diet, not only for their IP6, but for their
essential fatty acids and protein content. I like to soak an assortment
of seeds and nuts overnight (i. e. sesame seeds, sunflower seeds,
pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, etc.) and rinse them in
the morning for a quick, nutritious breakfast. They can be added to
green drinks or raw soups, too.
Here's one of my favorite raw soup recipes -
These are approximate measurements, so feel free to adjust according to
your own taste.
1 cup organic peas (fresh, or thawed frozen)
1 tbs. raw sesame tahini (contains IP6)
1 tbs. miso (technically not raw, but it's a live food)
1/4 onion
2 tbs. flax oil with DHA
1 cup or more hot water (only hot enough to bring entire mixture to 120
degrees)
Optional: add a pinch of thyme, black pepper, kelp or dulse, a
large handful of raw spinach or other mild flavored leafy greens, a few
tablespoons of seeds or nuts (preferably soaked overnight and rinsed)
Blend in blender at high speed. Surprisingly simple and delicious!
Of course you can also buy IP6 in capsules, but I prefer to get my
nutrients from whole foods.

Girls Contaminated with Cosmetic Chemicals

From the Environmental Working Group website - "Laboratory tests
reveal adolescent girls across America are contaminated with chemicals
commonly used in cosmetics and body care products. Environmental
Working Group (EWG) detected 16 chemicals from 4 chemical families -
phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks - in blood and urine samples
from 20 teen girls aged 14-19. Studies link these chemicals to
potential health effects including cancer and hormone disruption."
As a nanny for two "tween" girls, I am very much aware of the
pressure girls are under to start using makeup earlier and earlier.
That in itself is rather alarming, because it indicates that kids are
feeling self-conscious at a younger age than they did when I was a kid.
What's more alarming is that they don't have a clue about the dangers
of applying a daily dose of toxic chemicals to their skin.
They tend to buy cheap make up and toiletries with toxic
ingredients, imagining that it will make them "cool," and not realizing
that somewhere down the road they may be faced with hormone imbalances,
chronic fatigue syndrome, or a host of other problems ranging from
minor aches and pains to life-threatening cancers.
Because kids haven't yet developed the consciousness to protect
themselves from these dangers, parents and guardians must be able to
guide them, and help them form health-conscious habits. Visit the

Fight
Colds and Flu with Hydrogen Peroxide

Here's something I've never heard about before. From NaturalNews -
"Hydrogen peroxide has helped many people fight off flu and colds and
when drops are placed in the ear it seems to be effective four out of
five times used. This is especially true if this is done promptly upon
onset of symptoms."
Disregarding the strange sentence structure, this article contains
some fascinating information. I haven't had any personal experience
with it yet, but it is certainly worth a try and much less invasive
than the usual over-the-counter drugs recommended for colds and flu!
The hydrogen peroxide used is the 3% dilution found in brown
plastic bottles in any drug store. You can use this full strength in
the ears. Dilute with a small amount of water if there is stinging.
Hydrogen Peroxide is also a great ear wax remover. A doctor
recommended it to me years ago, and I've used it frequently. Maybe
that's why I so rarely have a cold or flu!

Mullein
and Coltsfoot for Cough Relief
-
Mullein and Coltsfoot have been used since ancient times for cough
relief. While Mullein is a mild and gentle herb that can be used by
anyone, Coltsfoot should not be taken for more than 3-4 weeks at a
time, and is not safe for pregnant or nursing women, or children under
6. However, Coltsfoot is one of the best cough remedies available. It
must always be steeped to remove the pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can
be toxic to the liver.
Here's a great natural cough syrup recipe from Natural News, using
Mullein and Coltsfoot -
"Ingredients:
1) 1/4 cup mullein (dried)
2) 1/4 cup coltsfoot (dried)
3) 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
4) 1 Tbsp (local) honey
Instructions:
1) In a french press, add blend of mullein and coltsfoot.
2) Steep 5-10 minutes with hot (not boiling) distilled water.
3) Transfer to glass container, add honey and lemon and mix well.
4) Consume as much of the tea as possible, diluting with water if too
strong.
5) Also makes a great iced tea if not steeped too long.
6) After drinking you should notice chest relief and a much more
productive cough.
7) For follow-up treatment try an equal blend of just lemon and honey."

Why
Eating Meat Spurs Cancer Growth
-
It has long been known that there is a statistical correlation
between meat eating and cancer, but until now, the exact cause has been
unknown. A recent Natural News report states that scientists at U. C.
San Diego School of Medicine "have found a mechanism that explains how
eating red meat, as well as milk, could spur the growth of
malignancies. The new study, headed by Ajit Varki, M.D., suggests that
inflammation resulting from a molecule introduced through eating these
foods could make cancer grow."
The culprit, it seems, is "a non-human glycan, or sugar molecule,
known as N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc). Although this molecule is
not produced naturally in the human body, it’s incorporated
into human
tissues if you eat red meat [or dairy products]. The body then develops
antibodies against Neu5Gc – and this immune response could
potentially
trigger a low-grade chronic inflammation, spurring the growth of
cancer."
With all the carcinogenic chemicals in our environment today, it
makes no sense to add inflammatory glycan from red meat and dairy
products to the mix. Meat and dairy products are totally unnecessary in
the human diet, and should be consumed in great moderation, if at all.
Furthermore, according to the U. N. Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO), cattle produce more greenhouse gases than all cars,
planes, and other forms of transportation put together. They emit more
than 100 different polluting gases, including ammonia, which is one of
the main causes of acid rain. Plus, cattle ranching is one of the
leading causes of the deforestation that reduces oxygen production in
our air.
Not only that, more than half the U.S. grain and nearly 40 percent
of world grain is being fed to livestock rather than being consumed
directly by humans. What a waste of food that could have saved millions
of people from starvation! Bottom line, meat and dairy is responsible
for a great deal of human and animal suffering, and you will do
yourself and our planet a favor by eliminating it from your diet.
