Greetings!
Well, it's been quite a month on the financial scene. Reminds me of
that line from Stan Laurel, "Another fine mess you're gotten me into."
I hope you are not letting the banking and stock market upheavals
stress you out. Remember, as Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "The only
thing we have to fear is fear itself."
Our financial system may come quickly crumbling down, but life goes
on, and it could ultimately turn out to be the best thing that could
happen. Anyway, I choose to be an optimist and look for a positive
twist to every event. There really is a silver lining to every cloud,
if only we take the trouble to look inside.
Meanwhile, think about what the bees have to put up with. Are our
handy gadgets making their lives miserable? Read on. Get rid of those
toxic Teflon pans. Get some exercise... a little dab 'l do ya. And most
of all, relax and enjoy life. You'll find some great exercise and
relaxation tips in the last two articles.
Me, I'm going to see if I can come up with anymore trite cliches to
entertain you next month.
To Your Health!

Chemicals
from Non-stick Cookware in Mother's Milk!
-
Yuck! Doesn't that sound awful? If you have been a regular reader,
I'm sure you know that I'm no fan of nonstick cookware like Teflon and
its relatives (after it killed my daughter's two lovebirds). Now we
have evidence that toxins from these pots and pans are not only deadly
to birds, but they also make their way into human tissues and even into
breast milk to poison our babies!
It seems that the only way to prevent this problem is to get the
word out so enough people become aware of the hazards and stop buying
and using these dangerous utensils. If enough people stop buying them,
the manufacturers will have to stop selling them!
If you still feel the need for non-stick cookware, there is a safer
alternative. Check out
http://www.green-pan.com/dev/ae/html/products.html
Here's what a recent NaturalNews.com article had to say on the toxic
cookware subject:
"Toxic chemicals used in nonstick coatings and stain-resistant
fabrics were found in the breast milk of every woman tested in a recent
study conducted by researchers from the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst. Researchers tested the milk from 45 different nursing mothers
for two different varieties of perflourinated compounds (PFCs):
perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA),
also known as C8. PFOA is used in nonstick coatings such as Teflon [ ].
"PFCs were found in the milk of every woman tested, at an average
concentration of 131 billionths of a gram of PFOS and 44 billionths of
a gram of PFOA per liter."
That's just creepy!

Bees
Give Us Food For Thought
-
It seems that any discussion of health and healing these days has
to include the bigger picture. Our air, water, and food supply are now
threatened by pollution from more sources than we can count. Now there
is also electronic pollution added to the mix, and it seems to be
affecting the birds and the bees. I have to wonder what effect it is
having on humans, as well.
Speaking of bees, "Dr Ulrich Warnke - who has been researching the
effects of man-made electrical fields on wildlife for more than 30
years - will tell the conference, organized by the Radiation Research
Trust at the Royal Society in London, that 'an unprecedented dense mesh
of artificial magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic fields' has been
generated, overwhelming the 'natural system of information' on which
the species rely.
"He believes this could be responsible for the disappearance of
bees in Europe and the US in what is known as colony collapse disorder,
for the decline of the house sparrow, whose numbers have fallen by half
in Britain over the past 30 years, and that it could also interfere
with bird migration."
While this evidence in not yet conclusive, it sure seems to
indicate that we have a problem on our hands. The question is, what can
we do about it?
It is pretty easy to see how we can clean up the air, water, and
soil by switching to sustainable energy, stricter regulations on
corporate production and waste disposal, and organic farming, but what
can we do about the rampant spread of cell phone towers, wireless
computer technology, and other sources of electromagnetic energy?
When and if the evidence comes in supporting Dr. Warnke's
assertions, are we going to be willing to give up our toys to save the
birds and the bees? Or can we just give them little lead shields to
keep out the radiation. (Sorry, I'm in a goofy mood.) Something to
think about!

Exercise
- You May Not Need as Much as You Think!
-
"(NaturalNews) With Exercise, keeping it short is the best way to
go. Did you know that a short burst of intense exercise is extremely
beneficial not only for overall fitness but for building lean muscle
tissue and promoting longevity?"
Actually, I DIDN'T know that, but I'm glad to hear about it,
because I hate feeling like I've got to squeeze in hours to exercise.
According to the Natural News article, it is actually better for your
health to exercise vigorously "from only 2 minutes to a maximum of 17
[minutes] a couple of times a week," than to put in more time.
Now, I can get behind the 2 minute exercise routine! The key is in
the word "vigorous." It's all about getting your blood pumping and
increasing your heart rate, and you can really do that in two minutes.
One great dance tune on the radio will keep you going for about three
minutes. Cut loose. Get a little wild. You'll feel great, and you'll be
adding years to your life and a bounce to your step. That's not bad for
a four minute a week commitment. And who knows, maybe it will feel so
good that you will be inspired to go the whole 17 minutes.
Seriously, I love my walks. I make sure to take a few walks or bike
rides every week, and I dance whenever I get the chance, but I like the
feeling that I don't HAVE to do it. So this 2 minute idea gives me a
sense of freedom about it, and that feeling of freedom is really
important to me.
We actually get more value from exercise when we have fun doing it.
What could be more fun than a couple minutes of wild dancing?

Meditation
- an Island of Sanity in a Crazy World
-
Ah... tranquility. Sometimes it seems so elusive when we get caught
up in the whirlwind of life. We forget that our bodies and minds need a
break from the constant urge to do and think and achieve. Our thoughts
spin in circles, reliving the past and planning the future, yet
somewhere in the center of all that frenetic activity, there is a calm
oasis of peace and a fountain of healing.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to find that calm center unless we
take the time to stop and simply be in the moment. It is a learned
skill that takes a bit of practice, but anyone can learn it. After all,
it is the original state we were in when we came into this life.
Meditation is not connected with any particular religion or
spiritual practice, though many incorporate it. It is a natural
function of the mind. Unfortunately, our Western educational system
tends to train us away from the meditative state, so we have to take
the initiative to educate the other half of our minds to be able to
access meditation.
Here are a few tips to find your way back there.
* Take 20 minutes or so to just relax.
* Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and simply be aware of
your breath moving in and out. Don't make it do anything, just be aware
of it.
* Not surprisingly, it may help to hold your hands in front of your
heart with palms together and fingertips touching, in the classic
"prayer" position. This is a very ancient mudra that helps to balance
brain hemisphere activity and create an inward focus.
* Imagine yourself sitting on a beautiful beach. Feel the grit of
warm sand beneath your fingers and balmy breezes caressing your face.
Hear the gentle rush of waves. See the golden glow of sunset reflected
on the calm water. Smell and taste the salt air.
* Allow images or colors to float through your mind.
* If words come into your mind, just replace them with images and
colors.
* It may also help to hum one note, or chant seed syllables such as Hu
or Om or Ah.
All these steps are designed to shift your consciousness from
left-brain linear thinking, to right-brain expansive, holistic
thinking. When this shift happens, you will probably experience a
feeling of well-being in the area of your heart. Your body will relax
and let in healing life-force energy. You may feel blissful, as if you
are connected with everything and all is right in the world.
If that doesn't happen the first few times, just keep practicing.
Eventually you will be able to shift into a meditative state at will.
After awhile, you will start to notice that you are generally feeling
healthier and more energetic, and funny thing, everything else in your
life will start falling into place more easily and effortlessly.
