Greetings!
Wow! Summer has sure zoomed by! I can hardly believe we are at our
second anniversary issue already.
Being freshly returned from my U. K. travels (which were wonderful,
by the way). I found the article on helpful travel tips particularly
appropriate. You may feel that they go a bit overboard, but I'm sure
you will find some good pointers.
On the subject of travels, I highly recommend Globus tours if you
have a limited time and want to see a lot. They do a great job and take
most of the stress out of traveling. The downside is that you don't
have much time for side trips or visiting friends along the way.
The next article focuses on a related issue. Sleep, whether
traveling or at home, is one of the most important factors in feeling
relaxed and healthy. Read on for some great tips on getting a good
night sleep.
And finally, a great article on aging gracefully. The most
important keys may not be what you think. It's not just what you eat,
but how you eat, and how you feel about getting older.
To Your Health!

Travel Tips

Some of these tips seem obvious to me, like boosting my immune
system before my trip, and bringing my own organic food bars, vitamin
supplements, and super-foods. (My bag of Goji berries, hemp seeds, and
raw chocolate nibs made a great lunch most days.) But some of the other
tips would have been great to think about before I left.
For instance, it would have been great to have taken along my handy
water filter bottle. You can buy them at camping supply stores. That
way I could have saved a lot of the time I spent looking for places to
buy bottled water. A blender bottle would also have been real handy.
Making a super-food green drink could have been a much better
alternative to picking through the breakfast bar every morning to find
some fresh fruit or whole grain options.
Check out the Organic Consumers Association article for some great tips
for your next trip.

Getting
the Sleep You Need
-
Here's an interesting study that I hadn't heard about before,
"According to data from the Cancer Prevention Study II, individuals who
average seven hours of sleep each night have a lower mortality rate
than do those who sleep eight hours or more." All my life I've been
trying to make sure I get at least eight hours sleep every night, and
now they tell me I may be shortening my lifespan! Oh well. Live and
learn.
Unfortunately, some people have a hard time even getting the ideal
seven hours sleep. The Smart-Publications article linked below will
give you lots of great ideas about how to achieve a restful and deep
sleep every night, including some great information on Melatonin
(really good for jet lag, I found), as well as Magnolia extract,
Passion Flower extract, GABA, Taurine (we used to add that to the
Ocelot's food, since it is particularly necessary for cats), and last
but not least Bacopa monniera, which, according to the article, is
"recognized as a powerful brain enhancer. It is still considered to be
the greatest herb in Ayurveda for treating age-related mental decline,
as well as for improving cognitive processes, including comprehension,
memory and recall. It also enhances the crucial coordination of these
three aspects of mental functioning, and helps increase one's ability
to solve problems."
And while we are on the subject of sleep, check out what the

Aging
Gracefully - Attitude and Herbs
-
I found this NaturalNews article very informative, but also
refreshing in its approach. Looking at cultures where people age
gracefully, a few things were noted. For example, "In societies where
people die in relatively good health at very advanced ages, there are a
few things that are always present. One of these is the belief that one
does not get 'old,' rather, one adds years to life."
"The second element of timeless youth and adding years to life is
the attitude around food. Notice, I said attitude around food, not the
food itself. Food choices come in here, but only secondary to attitude.
Actually, it is a cause and effect relationship where the food choices
are better because of a different attitude around food."
The key, it seems, is gratitude. When we have an attitude of
gratitude about life and the food we eat, we will naturally be
healthier and happier. This shouldn't be any surprise to my readers,
since we've mentioned it here before.
"The third element of timeless youth and adding years to life and
life to years, is social usefulness." If you don't have a feeling of
being useful, find some volunteer work to do. There are plenty of
people, animals, and causes out there that need a helping hand.
"The final element of timeless youth and adding years to life, [ ]
is personal cultivation." Read, think, question, take classes, learn
something new everyday, create something. As in any garden, unless you
cultivate your mind, it will go to weeds.
The article goes on to list a number of herbal formulas that can
alleviate some of the issues that come with aging, including a
ginko-ginger brain food, St. John's Wort, turmeric, Goji berries, and
more. It's a very informative article.
