Message from Bernadette Wulf
May flowers are bursting around my yard and we’ve already had a few hot days here in Sonoma County. It has been great to get out in the garden and get my hands (and feet) dirty again. So far, tomatoes, basil, and strawberries are thriving in their new beds.
This month we have some good information to protect you from the new superbug Candida auris, two excellent articles on protecting and healing your cardio vascular system, a handy guide to kid’s nutritional needs, and a peek into the world of flower essences (remedies).
I love flower essences and use them a lot. They are especially effective for kids and pets who don’t have as much emotional baggage as we adults do, but with a little more time adults will also notice great results.
I would love to hear your feedback and what you want to read about. Please do not reply to this email, but contact me at Email Bernadette.
To your health and happiness!

New Superbug & Solutions
Good old hydrogen peroxide is a must-have for all your disinfecting needs. The combination of peroxide and vinegar (used one after the other, not at the same time) can kill most household germs, including Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. And it looks like hydrogen peroxide alone can knock out the new superbug known as Candida auris.
That is really good news, but most hospitals don’t seem to have received the memo yet. Try to avoid hospitals if you can, but if you have to go, you might want to insist that everything they use on you is cleaned with hydrogen peroxide first – or UV radiation if it is something that can’t get wet.
From unikeyhealth.com blog:
Candida auris has also managed something extremely difficult – it has adapted to become resistant to even the strongest of hospital cleaning products. Even after thorough cleaning, hospital rooms of patients who were infected with Candida auris test positive for the fungus on everything from door handles to testing equipment and even the windows.
[One] hospital, which is currently anonymous because of their ongoing research, sprayed a hydrogen peroxide mist in the rooms that had been contaminated with Candida auris, and used localized UV radiation on equipment that couldn’t tolerate moisture.
The testing afterward revealed no Candida auris was present on any surface in the previously contaminated rooms. Even hospitals using the strongest chlorine-based cleaners still tested positive for significant amounts of Candida auris.
If you have a strong immune system, you probably don’t have to worry about Candida auris. It usually strikes very sick people, like cancer patients, but those are the people most likely to be infected in a hospital setting. Diagnosis is complicated, because they may already have symptoms from their illness that can be confused with the fever and chills caused by Candida auris.

Clean Out Your Arteries
Heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and atherosclerosis are leading causes of death in the USA, but they are usually preventable and can even be reversed with a good diet and a little exercise.
Here are 9 important things you can do to help your heart and arteries:
- Avoid or cut way back on animal products to one standard serving per day or less
- Keep your fats at 15% or less of your daily calories, or under 10% if you already have heart disease
- Make sure to get the essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 – a tablespoon of hemp seeds and a few tablespoons of sunflower seeds will provide all the fat you need as well as vitamin E that is so important for heart health
- Avoid vegetable oils in particular and all oils in general – stick to whole foods
- Most people will also benefit from taking a good algae-based EPA and DHA supplement like OmegaAstin or OmegaZen, because many of us do not convert omega 3 to those forms efficiently
- Eat your fats with non-starchy vegetables and avoid combining them with sweet or starchy foods as much as possible, especially if you have blood sugar issues
- Take a vitamin C supplement like EsterC or liposomal vitamin C and include plenty of fresh raw fruits and other foods that are high in vitamin C (see article below)
- Do NOT take a calcium supplement unless it is derived from food
- If you already have heart disease, find a holistic doctor who includes plant-based nutrition in your treatment rather than relying on drugs and surgery
GreenMedInfo.com has a few more suggestions to help clear your arteries:
-
- B Vitamins – [ ] a simple intervention using 2.5 mg folic acid, 25 mg Vitamin B6, and 0.5mg Vitamin B12 for 1 year, resulted in significant reductions in arterial thickness [ ]. Even niacin or folic acid alone has been show to have this effect in patients. [Note: Always opt for natural sources of the B-group vitamins, [ ] or a whole food extract, versus synthetic or semi-synthetic vitamins…].
- Garlic – [ ] garlic can save your life. It has been found to regress plaque buildup in the arteries…
- Pomegranate – this super healing fruit has been found to regress plaque buildup in the arteries…
- Fermented Cabbage – Kimchi, a Korean recipe, which includes fermented cabbage, hot pepper, and various other ingredients, including fermented fish, appears to stall the atherosclerotic process… [Note: Kimchi has been implicated in higher prostate and breast cancer rates (but the jury is still out on sauerkraut) – Ed.]
- L-Arginine: This amino acid is capable of preventing arterial thickening – up to 24% reduction! [ ]
- Turmeric (curcumin): the primary polyphenol in the Indian spice turmeric known as curcumin has been found to be an excellent cardioprotective, with over 30 studies demonstrating this fact. [ ]
- Sesame Seed: probably one of the most under-appreciated super foods on the planet, sesame seed, which we have shown is as effective as Tylenol for arthritic pain, may be an excellent cardioprotective substance, ideally suited for preventing the progression of atherosclerosis. [ ]

Heart Disease and Vitamin C Deficiency
Heart disease and strokes are often caused by deposits of fat and cholesterol clogging the arteries. Apparently, vitamin C can help to prevent this. Of course there are also other factors, as we saw in the article above, but adequate vitamin C consumption may top the list.
From naturalhealth365.com:
Most animals (with the exception of primates and guinea pigs) produce their own stores of vitamin C – and this, Dr. Rath maintains, is the reason that coronary artery disease and heart attacks are virtually unknown in the animal kingdom.
Humans, due to an evolutionary mutation, are not so fortunate – and must rely on diet for sufficient amounts of antioxidant vitamin C.
Shortages of vitamin C and other micronutrients can cause a lack of flexibility in arterial walls, leading to lesions, fissures and cracks. In an attempt to repair the problem, the body speeds lipoproteins (cholesterol and fat particles, along with calcium) to arterial walls, resulting in deposits of artery-clogging plaque.
Though vitamins are always best when found in fresh foods, even ascorbic acid seems to help prevent damage to arteries. EsterC or liposomal vitamin C are the best supplemental forms, according to Anthony William, the Medical Medium.

Nutrition for Kids – and You Too!
Dr. Neal Barnard, founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, is one of my heroes. He is out there working tirelessly – doing research, and running clinics that heal people of degenerative diseases.
His main focus has been healing diabetes and blood sugar issues on an all-plant diet. I hesitate to use the term “plant-based” anymore, because some people are now twisting that to mean a diet of mostly plants that also includes animal products. That would describe pretty much every diet on the planet, except extreme ketogenic diets. Not very helpful!
Dr. Barnard has come to much the same conclusions as most other plant-based doctors and researchers. They all have a slightly different slant, some recommending more fat or protein, others recommending more starches or fruits, but all are big fans of vegetables. Some are all raw, others include cooked foods. Most of them have spent many years in their own practice using all-plant diets to heal heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many other dreaded diseases.
You can download Dr. Barnard’s excellent Nutrition for Kids PDF at no cost. It is designed for parents and kids, but there might be an idea or two you could use to improve your own nutrition.

Flower Remedies or Essential Oils?
I just love Seneca at Freedom Flowers. I have never actually met her, but her posts on facebook are excellent, and I’ve experienced great benefits from taking her flower essences. She is especially gifted at making essence blends to address particular problems.
The first one I tried was “Align” for healing back and spine problems. I was amazed that it really worked when my back went out. I haven’t had a back problem since I took it a couple of years ago. Even so, I always keep some on hand, just in case!
If you are not familiar with flower essences, I urge you to get to know them right away. They work on the emotional level of disease, which is often the root of our problems. Until the emotional issues are cleared, illness tends to linger on, or reappear in different ways.
Some people may confuse flower essences or flower remedies (as they were originally called by Dr. Bach who first created them) with essential oils, which can also be made from flowers.
Here’s what Seneca has to say about the difference:
Differences: Essential oils can help emotionally, spiritually and physically. I notice them the most physically. Many are anti-microbial, they can help you kick colds and are great for skin and hair care as well as many other physical concerns. That’s not true of flower essences.
Flower essences affect the physical by addressing the emotional cause that predisposed you to the illness in the first place. [ ] For more information on flower essences and the physical, check out this chart.
Flower essences [ ] are super healers of the emotions. They can get so specifically to the root of your problems, and are normally very gentle about it.
There you have it. Essential oils are great, and I use them all the time, but they won’t get to the root of your emotional issues nearly as well as flower essences. Be warned, some essences are very powerful and may bring up traumatic memories for healing. If you are dealing with deep-seated emotional traumas, please work with a trusted mental health professional who can help you navigate through the minefield of your emotional triggers.
One excellent flower essence blend to keep on hand is “Joy.” It is like a breath of fresh air, or sunshine flooding your room on a summer morning. It can be very helpful if another essence is bringing up too much heavy emotion to process all at once. Just stop using the first one and take a few drops of “Joy” for a few days. Then resume the heavier essence when you are ready.
Even though essences can bring up depression, fears, anger, resentment, and other unpleasant emotions, they also help to move them through and out of your energy field so you are permanently free of them. It is worth some temporary discomfort to reach a new level of freedom. I guess that is why Seneca calls her company Freedom Flowers.
