First signs of Spring - Happy Imbolc!Greetings!

What a wild ride it has been throughout January. So many people I know were forgetting wallets, passports, car keys, driver’s licenses and the like. If it weren’t for Mercury retrograde I might be worried about early signs of dementia. Of course there were also the usual technical snafus. Even the garbage truck broke down in front of my house!

And yet it was also a wonderful month here in Sonoma County. We had lots of sunshine and warm days and it is beginning to look like springtime as the acacias burst into bloom! But let’s keep our fingers crossed for more rain – we really need it! By the way, happy Imbolc or Brigit’s Day – it’s the first day of spring in the Celtic calendar. And happy year of the tiger too!

This month we have some fascinating articles about Alzheimer’s and how to prevent it, some surprise uses for teff, benefits of rosemary, an introduction to cell salts and, perhaps most important of all, how to clear heavy metals from your body and brain. Read on for all the details.

Upcoming Events on Zoom

We had a couple of deep transformational faery workshops in January, so I’m going to lighten things up in February with a short 2 hour Dragon Guardians Workshop. Have you ever wanted to take a ride on a dragon? Here’s your chance! Click the banner for more information.

Dragon Guardians & Spirit Guides coming soon!

That’s all for this month.

To your health and happiness!

Are You Setting Yourself Up for Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s rates have been rising rapidly in recent years and it is pretty scary to think that we could develop this debilitating disease – especially if we’ve had to watch loved ones go through it. This rise in Alzheimer’s has baffled doctors, but it looks like science is finally homing in on the main cause. Can you guess what it is?

Though there is a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s, and we are all bombarded with nasty heavy metals, industrial chemicals, plastics and pesticides every day, it appears that diet plays the biggest part in the development of the disease. In recent years, people have been consuming a lot more meat and animal products on average – dramatically more so in Japan.

Take a look at these facts shared by Dr. Greger:

  • The dramatic increase in dementia in Japan over recent decades has been associated with an increase in animal products, including meat, and a decrease in rice consumption. [ ]
  • Across countries, intake of meat, especially, as well as eggs and high-fat dairy, appears to be the “most important dietary link” to Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline have been associated with diets heavy in meat, sweets, and fat, while most plant foods are associated with reduced risk.
  • Many factors have been proposed as the cause of high-fat diet-induced damage to the brain, particularly with aging, including inflammation and changes to blood vessels and the integrity of the blood-brain barrier.
  • On autopsy, the cerebral arteries of Alzheimer’s patients are so clogged with atherosclerotic plaque packed with cholesterol and fat that they are nearly closed. [ ]

I don’t know about you, but to me it is sure not worth taking the risk of developing Alzheimer’s just so I can indulge in the typical American breakfast of bacon, butter and eggs or a dinner of hamburger, chicken or steak followed by high-fat ice cream.

And what I find really strange is that doctors are still recommending a ketogenic diet for Alzheimer’s patients! Wouldn’t that be considered malpractice given what we know now?

Teff - the new COOL grainTeff for More than Injera

If you have ever eaten at an Ethiopian restaurant, you have probably tried their delicious sour dough flatbread called injera which is made from teff. But that is not all teff is good for by far.

Here’s what foodrevolution.com says about it:

Teff features an impressive nutritional profile, leading some foodies to anoint it “the new quinoa.” You may have consumed teff if you’ve ever had injera — a stretchy Ethiopian flatbread that accompanies a variety of spiced stews and serves as both plate and utensils (spoiler alert: we’re including a recipe for injera in this article). More and more gluten-free products, such as pancake mixes and flours, now contain teff, too. [ ]

Like other millets (actually, there’s fierce debate in certain agronomic circles about whether teff is a true millet or not; I choose not to take sides), teff is a type of cereal grain and not a pseudocereal (other seed that’s used like a grain) like quinoa or buckwheat. One of the main differences is that in teff and other cereal grains, starch granules are stored in the endosperm. In pseudocereals, on the other hand, the starch granules are stored in what’s referred to as the perisperm.

Another good thing about teff is that it is naturally gluten free and it makes a great ingredient in most gluten free baked goods.

rosemary for remembranceRosemary for Remembrance – and a Lot More

Aside from being a delicious addition to savory stews, soups and roasted veggies, rosemary has multiple health benefits. Here are just a few of them listed in an article posted by naturalhealth365.com:

Rosmarinic acid appeared to not only alleviate symptoms but also slow down cartilage degeneration. [ ] And in a 2021 animal study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, researchers concluded that a nanoemulsion of rosemary and peppermint essential oils reduced osteoarthritis pain. [ ] It has also been shown to elevate levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione, important antioxidants produced in the body.

Isn’t it wonderful that such a potent medicinal herb can also smell and taste so good? Nature is so amazing!

Cell salts for what ails youCell Salts & How to Use Them

Someone on facebook chastised me for posting an article from Epoch Times, saying it is a far right-wing news outlet. Sorry, but I don’t like to encourage that sort of divisiveness. When they post interesting health articles like this one I’m happy to share them. (I ignore most of their articles on other news… as well as most other media news outlets. If something really important happens I’m sure I will hear about it without getting caught up in the media news circus!)

That being said, I thought this article on cell salts was well worth sharing. We don’t usually hear much about cell salts and I thought this article was a really good brief introduction.

Cell salts are a type of homeopathic remedy, so they are very safe to use and virtually free of side effects while being highly effective. From colds to stuffy ears, cell salts can really help get your body back in balance.

Among the best kept secrets in your health food store, tissue salts—also known as cell salts—give us the best of both worlds. They act like nutritional supplements in the form of easily-absorbed minerals, plus they are homeopathic medicines transmitting information to our body’s healing energy. So they can act like a tonic to strengthen our foundation, or work like a remedy to heal our ills. Each of the cell salts is a blend of two essential minerals, and each one has multiple uses.

Cell salts are not expensive, so why not keep an assortment of them in your medicine cabinet? You never know when they might be useful in fighting off a bug or annoying symptom.

Wild blueberries are one of the top antioxidant foodsHow to Remove Heavy Metals

This is one of the most important things you can do for your health – and it may even help prevent Alzheimer’s.

We are all exposed to heavy metals on a daily basis, from aluminum foil touching our food to metals in our water supply and leaching from our cooking utensils. They are even in our medications and inoculations. These metals burden our livers, short circuit electrical impulses in our brains and feed pathogenic invaders.

Here’s what Anthony William, the Medical Medium says about them:

On their own, these heavy metals are poisons. But they also tend to oxidize, causing even more problems, such as toxic runoff that damages any tissue in its path. Toxic heavy metals aren’t just a problem in the brain. When they’re present anywhere in the body, they lower overall immunity and act as fuel for viruses and bacteria.” – Excerpt from Life-Changing Foods

To safely and effectively remove metals from your body, focus on eating the below five foods that work synergistically together every day.

      • Wild blueberries (1-2 cups – available frozen)
      • Fresh Cilantro (1 cup, packed – stems okay)
      • Spirulina (1-2 teaspoons – Vimergy brand is best)
      • Barley grass juice powder (1 teaspoon – Vimergy brand is best)
      • Atlantic dulse (1-2 Tablespoons – suppliers change – check online sources)

To make it easy to get all 5 ingredients into your daily diet, add a banana or two plus a peeled orange or a cup of OJ and make yourself a heavy metal detox smoothy. I leave out the dulse and eat it separately, which makes the smoothie taste a lot better. You can add dulse flakes to salad, soup or any savory dish, or just eat it in strips (my favorite).
