Happy new year!Message from Bernadette Wulf

Happy New Year!

Do you make New Years resolutions?

I don’t. I never stick to them anyway, so why bother?

What I do every year is make a vision board to set the tone for the year ahead.

There’s nothing very different that I want to manifest this year, so I focused on the basics: health, wealth and happiness, with lots of magic in the mix, of course!

Here’s the vision board I whipped up this morning. It makes me feel happy:

2023 vision board

I used a glitter frame this time, because I want my vision to expand into new dimensions. The New Earth Golden Age is here if we claim it. Happy 2023!

Make your own vision board!

It’s easy on Canva.com. Or you can cut up old magazines or print out images from the internet if you prefer a hard copy. Make it fun and uplifting and it will carry you through the new year with ease.

Oh, before I forget (speaking of wealth) – I have a free Fix Your Finances workshop coming up on January 14th.

I decided to offer it for free, because so many people in my WFPB facebook group were saying they couldn’t afford organic foods. Yes you CAN!

I pulled myself out of serious poverty consciousness over 20 years ago, so I know you can do it too. I’ll give you the scoop in the workshop.

This Month

Coincidentally, we have several articles related to aging. Learn how people in the Blue Zones often live to be 100 in good health, how to protect your spine from fractures and the best way to get the collagen you need for healthy skin and connective tissue.

Though not directly connected with aging, the article on why not to eat nutritional yeast may add a few years to your life.

To your health and happiness!

How to Live to Be One Hundred!

Healthy Aging - Blue ZonesDid you know that some groups of people have a much higher chance of living to a healthy old age than others?

Scientists decided to find out why – from foodrevolution.org:

Using epidemiological data, statistics, birth certificates, and other research, the team verified the unusual distribution of ages that showed how common it was to live for 100 years or more. They found that someone living in a Blue Zone is 10 times more likely to reach 100 than a person living in the United States as a whole.

Spoiler alert: We’re going to see that longevity in these cultures isn’t linked to self-denial and abstinence, but rather to pleasure, social connection, meaningful work, and delicious, healthy, life-giving food and drink.

Ten times more likely to live to be 100 is quite a big difference!

These groups are spread all over the world, but one is right here in California where I’ve lived all my life. What do you think these people are doing differently?

The studies show these are the main factors in their longevity:

  • Regular Exercise: Moving Naturally
  • Finding Your Purpose
  • Relaxing and Managing Stress
  • Following the 80% Rule
  • Eating Mostly Plants (whole foods)
  • Drinking Alcohol in Moderation (or not at all)
  • Having a Sense of Belonging
  • Putting Loved Ones & Family First
  • Hanging Out With a Supportive Social Group

Diet and exercise are always recommended by health gurus, but having a purpose in life may be even more important.

The last three items on the list are about community and social connections. As we get older, friends and family members may die or move away and it’s harder to make new friends. If we want to have a long healthy life, it’s important to get involved in activities where we can hang out with friends and family, meet people and form new friendships.

Why Avoid Nutritional Yeast?

Beware of Nutritional Yeast! One of the big differences between Medical Medium and most other plant-based health teachers is his insistence that nutritional yeast (AKA Nooch) is harmful to health.

If you wonder why, here’s an excellent article that explains why nutritional yeast should be avoided, particularly in the large quantities people tend to eat it.

Here’s the short version – from muneezaahmed.com:

Its made from GMO beets (yes, you heard that right)
It converts to MSG in the brain (you heard that too!)
It triggers addiction by triggering adrenaline
It’s not nutritional
You can get stomach aches, it is an irritant

In my WFPB recipe group on facebook, quite a few people have mentioned how nutritional yeast undermined their health. I never noticed a problem with it myself, but now that I’ve stopped eating it I can hardly stand the taste and smell anymore (if it happens to slip into something I taste).

Just the fact that it is grown on GMO beets is enough to keep me away, but MSG in the brain is pretty bad too!

Bottom line, nobody needs it and there’s no good reason to eat it, so why not just leave it out? If you are looking for that umami flavor in your meals, try coconut aminos or chickpea miso for a non-GMO flavor boost.

Healthy Aging - We get collagen from amino acids, not animals! healitall.comDoes Eating Collagen Slow Aging?

Collagen keeps skin healthy and connective tissue strong, so we all need it.

However, there’s a big fad these days promoting consumption of collagen from animals. It is based on the misguided idea that if we eat collagen our body will use it as our own.

That is simply not true. All collagen consumed has to be broken down into amino acids, just like any protein. And, if you’ve been reading my newsletters for awhile, you know that all the amino acids we need are available in whole plant foods.

Here’s what foodrevolution.org has to say about collagen:

The amino acids necessary for collagen production can come from any protein source, but plant-based proteins have generally been shown to be healthier. Some plant-based sources of protein include whole soy foods like tofu and tempeh, legumes including beans, peas, and lentils, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and even vegetables like broccoli [I would also add leafy greens -Ed.].

The amino acids that are most important for collagen production are glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and lysine. Some of the best plant-based sources of these amino acids are nuts, seeds, legumes, and mushrooms. (For more on protein, see our article here.)

I crossed out the soy products, since they are almost all contaminated with GMOs now, even the organic ones due to cross pollination. In any case, you’ll get plenty of protein without soy. Beans, seeds, leafy greens and nuts are loaded with protein and even most fruits have all the protein you need.

So eating collagen, that is likely contaminated with heavy metals, hormones, antibiotics and other toxins found in animal products, is probably the worst way to boost your own collagen production.
