Message from Bernadette Wulf

Happy, healthy, Thanksgiving!Greetings!
Wow! It has been a wild ride since I sent out my October newsletter. You may have noticed that this one is five days late! I had to evacuate for several days due to the Sonoma County fire.

Then I returned home just in time to get the gas turned on for heat, hot water and cooking. We had a little Halloween party that evening, and passed out treats to the hoards of neighborhood kids who had just returned home from their own evacuations.

Then it was time for a long-awaited three day birthday party in Capitola, so lots more driving and good times away from home. Somehow my newsletter fell through the cracks in the midst of all the hubbub, but here I am, “back to the old drawing board” as they say. It is GOOD to be home!

Wishing you all a wonderful season of gratitude and a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!

This month I found a fascinating article on the effect of Vitamin D on Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and one on the amazing benefits of Vitamin C for preventing strokes. We also have two very interesting articles on magnesium supplementation for building strong bones as well as for preventing insulin resistance.

I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send your requests, suggestions, questions, or any sort of feedback. I always appreciate hearing from my readers – Please do not reply to this email, but use this link Email Bernadette to contact me.

To your health and happiness!

vitamin D for Hashimoto's ThyroiditisVitamin D & Hashimoto’s

According to the Medical Medium, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is caused by the Epstein Barr Virus, so it would make sense that vitamin D could help manage it.

Vitamin D is essential for the immune system and the immune system fights viruses. This would also be true of Vitamin C along with a balanced diet in general.

Here’s what the naturalhealth365.com article had to say:

In a May 2019 study published in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research, a team of researchers set out to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on a group of women with Hashimoto’s. They randomly divided 42 women into an experimental group and control group.

The experimental group received 50,000 IU of vitamin D weekly over the course of three months; the control group received a weekly placebo pill.

By the end of the study, the researchers found that patients taking vitamin D had a significant reduction in certain antibodies and hormones which are normally elevated in Hashimoto’s disease. The authors rightly note that “further well controlled, large, longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether it can be introduced in clinical practice,” but their data does give support to the notion that a safe, simple, natural vitamin D supplement may help manage this common and often debilitating disease.

Doesn’t look like Vitamin D is a cure in itself, but it could be a excellent addition to any treatment, along with following the guidelines outlined in the Medical Medium Thyroid Healing book.

magnesium and vitamin C for bone healthProtect Your Bones with Magnesium!

As we get older, we need to take extra care to protect our bones from osteoporosis. There are two crucial nutrients many doctors fail to mention when discussing bone health: vitamin C and magnesium!

We often hear recommendations for calcium supplements, but all that extra calcium can end up lining your arteries, putting you at risk for a stroke or heart attack! If you feel you must take a calcium supplement, make sure it is a natural supplement derived from plants – or better yet, eat lots of collard greens. Collards are a calcium rich superfood that does not get the attention it deserves.

What naturalhealth365.com reports:

If the body’s need for vitamin C is not met, insufficient production of collagen can result – leading to easily fractured bones. In fact, many natural health experts believe that osteoporosis is really a type of vitamin C deficiency, or “scurvy of the bones.” [ ]

Magnesium works in concert with calcium to suppress hormones that break down bones – while activating enzymes needed for the production of new bone. Unfortunately, experts estimate that about half of all Americans fail to consume enough of this important mineral.

In fact, more than 40 percent of post-menopausal women have low magnesium blood levels, which can trigger excessive bone breakdown. [ ]

Eating dark leafy greens, potatoes, raisins, chocolate, pumpkin seeds, nuts and avocados can help ramp up your dietary intake of magnesium.  Of course, your integrative healthcare provider may recommend supplementing with magnesium to avoid shortfalls.

Most natural healers recommend dosages in the area of 250 to 750 mg a day.  And, magnesium citrate, magnesium glycinate and magnesium taurate are considered the most bioavailable forms.

The magnesium supplement most often recommended by the Medical Medium and other health researchers I trust is Calm unflavored.

Vitamin C to prevent strokesPrevent Strokes with Vitamin C

It never occurred to me that vitamin C would be important in preventing strokes, but given that our ape-like ancestors evolved on a vitamin C-rich diet of fruits and leafy greens, it is not surprising that it is essential for so many factors in our health. According to naturalhealth365.com:

there is research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Stroke: A Journal of Cerebral Circulation which found “vitamin C to be exceptionally helpful in stroke prevention.” Basically, an elevated blood plasma level of vitamin C seems to have a protective effect on the arteries.

For example, stroke researcher Stéphane Vannier, MD and her colleagues recently found that plasma vitamin C concentrations lower than 11 micromoles per liter can lead to hemorrhagic effects.  Sixty-five people who suffered hemorrhagic stroke all showed depleted vitamin C levels; the control group, who did not suffer stroke, had normal C levels.

We all know we can get vitamin C from oranges and other citrus fruits, but other great sources are yellow, red, or orange bell peppers, camu camu and other berries, broccoli, and leafy green vegetables. Raw foods contain far more vitamin C, since it is one of the vitamins destroyed by heat.

The best supplemental forms are EsterC and liposomal vitamin C according to Anthony William, the Medical Medium.

Magnesium for blood sugar balanceMagnesium & Insulin Resistance

Once again, magnesium seems to be the missing link in the nutritional profile of so many people, including those with type 2 diabetes. Like vitamin C, it was abundant in the diets of our ape-like ancestors, being most available in leafy greens, nuts, and seeds.

Again from naturalhealth365.com:

…multiple studies show that a magnesium deficiency – which affects nearly 50% of all Americans – is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Additionally, hyperinsulinemia (high levels of insulin in the blood) increases the rate at which magnesium is excreted through the urine, further depleting you of this critical mineral.

It’s not entirely clear which direction the relationship goes – that is, whether insulin resistance contributes to low levels of magnesium or if low magnesium contributes to insulin resistance.  It could be a bit of both. But the research is relatively clear about the health benefits of this natural remedy.

For example, magnesium supplementation can reduce insulin resistance even in non-diabetic people, as seen in a 2011 double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized controlled trial published in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism.

Even if you are not concerned about blood sugar issues, it makes sense to include lots of magnesium-rich foods in your diet. For a list of magnesium-rich foods visit – https://www.myfooddata.com/articles/foods-high-in-magnesium.php
