Happy Lughnasadh! It is the old Celtic holiday celebrating the first harvest and the end of summer. It always feels a bit sad to me as the days get shorter and winter approaches, but the abundance of delicious ripe fruits and vegetables is certainly something to celebrate.

What do you think of my new header image? Miss the old one – or like the change? It seemed like time for a new look (and I love playing around on Canva). I wanted to create a header that shares elements with my art and portal website headers and that reflects my “blue ray” life mission.

Fat on the brain?The Truth About Gluten

Gluten-free has become something of a fad over the last few years, but is there really a good reason to avoid gluten?

For some people, the answer is a very obvious yes! Even a whiff of wheat flour can send them into days of pain and misery. But what about everyone else?

Here’s what Dr. O’Bryan has to say about it, from well.org:

As it turns out, there is a need for us to be concerned about gluten. According to Dr. O’Bryan, all of us have issues with breaking down gluten. 

So, why do some of us feel the wrath more than others? Well, how your body reacts to gluten depends on the state of your gut health and whether your body has reached its limits.

We all take a hit. It’s just that some of us can recover quickly and move on, while others need to detox their bodies or even cut out food groups completely.

According to Anthony William, the Medical Medium, gluten feeds pathogens. It may well be that people with a lot of particular pathogens in their gut will react much more dramatically than those who have few or none of them.

Whatever the case, it sounds like gluten is something most of us should avoid – but that doesn’t mean loading up on junk food alternatives. When you shop for gluten-free baked goods, be sure to read ingredient labels and look for whole food ingredients – or do your own gluten-free baking so you know what goes into it.

Though it has long been suspected that eating meat could contribute to developing colon cancer, the proof was not available until now.

When looking at tumors from the group who ate the most red meat, a common trait stood out: They tended to show signs of alkylation, a type of DNA damage that can lead to cancer-causing genetic mutations. 

Notably, the researchers also found that of the 900 colorectal cancer patients included in their review, those whose tumors had the highest levels of alkylating damage were 47 percent more likely to die of colorectal cancer than those whose tumors had the lowest levels of alkylating damage.

honey for canker sores - healitall.comHoney for Canker Sores

We’ve all heard that honey has healing properties, but this is pretty amazing. Turns out that honey beats out the pharmaceutical options by a lot!

From NutritionFacts.org:

Researchers randomized subjects with canker sores into one of three groups. Three times a day after meals, they received either an over-the-counter soothing pain-relieving paste, a prescription steroid cream, or just plain commercial honey, applied directly onto the canker sore with a sterile cotton swab. What happened? 

With the over-the-counter paste, pain was cut in half by the fourth day and gone by the eighth. On the prescription steroids, pain was halved at just two days and gone by four. 

And the honey group? Remember that series of cases that claimed total pain relief in just one day? It was finally put to the test, and, indeed, there was total pain relief within one day—and honey is about 500 times cheaper. 

So you can do yourself, the bees and your local ethical bee keepers a favor, by keeping organic raw honey on hand.

By the way, did you know that honey bees are not native to America? They were brought here by beekeepers to pollinate the crops brought here from other lands. Our supply of fruits and vegetables depends on the humble honey bee and the people who care for them.

Lucky for us, bees love making honey so much that they make a lot more than they need. Just make sure to get your honey from beekeepers who leave enough honey for the bees rather than replacing it with sugar water. After all, they worked hard for it!

DIY cooking avoids BPA and BPSRaw Mushrooms?

Are they safe to eat? And what is the best way to remove natural toxins in mushrooms.

The answer may surprise you… it’s even better than the microwave that Dr. Greger recommends. I personally wouldn’t have a microwave in my house, so I was thrilled to learn about this.

Even our common button and crimini mushrooms contain toxins, but that doesn’t mean they are not good for us. In fact, even eating one button mushroom a day has been shown to substantially reduce breast cancer risk.

Fortunately, there are some easy ways to remove most of the toxins. Watch this 6 minute video or click on the “view transcript” link below it on the videoz page if you prefer to read.

Answer: freezing and thawing removes 77% of toxins making it best of all common methods – however, boiling them for an hour and draining works even better, but who would cook mushrooms like that?
