Here’s wishing you very happy holidays, whatever you like to celebrate at this time of year!

We’ve been a lot of having frosty mornings here in Northern California, unlike last year when it was relatively warm all winter.

I’ve noticed a lot more acorns on the ground than I’ve ever seen before. I’m guessing that means we are in for a long cold winter (or at least as cold as it ever gets in California). Time will tell.

This Month

In a way, all the articles this month (and most months) can be related to cancer prevention, because toxins in our foods and environment are connected with rising cancer rates. But this month we have two articles specifically on cancer prevention.

Then there is yet another warning about the dangers of eating Impossible Burgers, along with a warning about toxins in drinking straws, even the eco-friendly ones — stick with stainless steel.

Last and by no means least, a friendly reminder that what you choose to eat can have a powerful impact on the health of our planet, and of course your own health (but you already knew that).

Toxic fast food wrappers on 1/3 of fast foodImpossibly Bad Burgers

I can’t stress enough how bad these GMO-laden burgers are for your health. The ingredient list makes my skin crawl!

If you absolutely must eat a commercial fake-meat burger, stick with Beyond Burgers. They are not ideal, but the ingredients are much healthier.

According to Impossible Foods’ own website, their burger is actually based on yeast that has been genetically engineered to resemble leghemoglobin – a substance found in the roots of soybean plants.

Soy leghemoglobin, or SLH, breaks down into the bright-red “heme” protein – which causes the burger to resemble meat and (creepily) even allows it to “bleed.” When ingested, SLH breaks down into 46 other proteins of undetermined safety – proteins that are not normally found in the human body and have undergone no testing whatsoever.

I’m not usually a straw drinker, but I know some people love them. Here’s the scoop on avoiding toxins in your straws.

Some straw makers switched to plant-based alternatives to plastic straws in response to complaints and governmental pressure regarding the PFAS within plastic.  Unfortunately, plastic straw alternatives are toxic, except for stainless steel.  Paper straws break down quickly, making them frustrating to use more than once.  Efforts to strengthen paper straws ultimately made them difficult to recycle.

Considering the study results, the pivot to eco-friendly straws to promote health and environmental sustainability is ironic.  PFAS forever chemicals that cause a wide range of health problems ranging from cancer to obesity, thyroid disease, and liver damage were found in 27 of the 39 straws, including 18 of 20 paper varieties.

Bottom line, the only safe straw, according to this article, is one made of stainless steel!

Earth Stewardship and NutritionDiet & Climate

The World Health Organization doesn’t want to promote a healthy diet that could save the planet and millions of human lives each year.

Why? Here’s their excuse, from nutritionfacts.org:

See, if we “focused on promoting predominantly plant-based foods, and excluding foods deemed unhealthy, including meat and other animal-based foods,” such a diet could save 10 million lives a year and $30 trillion in healthcare costs, and help save the entire planet, but it “could lead to the loss of…jobs linked to animal husbandry and the production of ‘unhealthy’ foods….”

Sure, some people have jobs clearcutting forests for grazing land, or jobs running factory farms that mistreat animals and pollute the environment, or jobs in junk food factories — and don’t forget the jobs that rake in billions of dollars for the healthcare industry that would be lost if people started getting healthy. But what good will those jobs be if we are faced with the climate collapse that thousands of scientists are warning us about?

Government agencies will not lead the way. They are too busy trying to please the voters. We need a grassroots movement based on educating the public and making personal choices. It has to start with you and me. Are you ready to do your part?
