Message from Bernadette Wulf

Greetings!

Hey! Did you notice that you didn’t get your May newsletter?

For the first time since 2006 I didn’t send it. That’s because I broke my right wrist and couldn’t type – tripped when I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.

It is still pretty awkward trying to type now, 3 1/2 weeks in, but at least I can use my arm a little. Even so, I’ll have to keep this short. (And yes I did take homeopathic Arnica and Symphytum.)

I did find some interesting articles to share this month about Beans, Berries & Alcohol. Please forgive the brevity of my comments.

Upcoming Events on Zoom

I’ve got something really fun in the works coming up soon… or at least I think it will be really fun.

Here’s a hint…

Divination Divas Membership Club

I’ll tell you more once I get it all sorted out. Keep an eye on your inbox!

That’s all for this month.

Beans for health and longevityBeans Boost Health!

In case you’re wondering, I can’t imagine eating beans three times a day like Dr. Greger suggests. I try to eat some most days of the week, though.

From NutritionFacts.org:

  • Researchers have found that a single daily serving of beans is associated with a 38 percent lower risk of heart attack and bean eaters have an 8 percent lower all-cause mortality, again after adjusting for other dietary factors.
  • Dietary bean intake significantly reduces so-called bad LDL cholesterol levels, and the low glycemic index and saturated fat content of beans, along with being high in fiber, potassium, and plant protein, each independently confers blood pressure-lowering effects.
  • Beans may not only be able to prevent artery disease, but reverse it, too, and researchers have concluded, “A legume-rich diet can elicit major improvements in arterial function.”

Wild blueberries are one of the top antioxidant foodsYogurt Blocks Benefits of Berries

I thought this was interesting how dairy stops the effectiveness of including berries in our diet. So pass on the whipped cream next time you have strawberry shortcake!

Not sure whether plant-based yogurt would have the same effect or not. I’m guessing not.

From NutritionFacts.org:

  • Two cups of fresh blueberries a day gave the same kind of significant drop, but doubling the amount didn’t make the blueberries work any better than having just one cup.
  • Mixing blueberries with dairy, such as yogurt or skim milk, however, does not result in any clinical efficacy, as dairy has been shown to block the absorption of berry nutrients.
  • Comparing the antioxidant activity of blueberries with either water or milk, researchers found spikes in the antioxidants in the bloodstream after consuming blueberries with water, but berries with dairy not only resulted in less of a bump but actually ended up with less antioxidant capacity than before they had started. The milk appeared to eliminate the blood pressure-lowering benefits of the blueberries, and full-fat milk may inhibit nutrient absorption the most.

Sticking to a healthy diet in social situationsIs Alcohol Ever Healthy?

Much as it can be fun to have a drink on occasion, the claims that it benefits your health appear to be grossly exaggerated.

This seems to be a well balanced article on the subject.

From ForksOverKnives.com:

Consuming alcohol, even in moderation, can negatively impact the brain and increase the risk for several types of cancer. And while previous observational studies have linked light alcohol consumption with heart-health benefits, recent research calls into question the nature of that connection.

“If you choose to embark on the social practice of drinking an alcoholic beverage, just recognize that there are well-defined health risks,” says Li.

There you have it!
