Happy April!
No fooling! I found so many good articles this month that I had to push half of them off to next month.
This time you’ll find something new I learned about supplementing with calcium, a lively debate about olive oil, new findings about mammograms, a free book on pandemics from Dr. Greger, and last but not least, some good reasons to avoid taking antibiotics if at all possible.

Truth About Calcium
Here’s some news that surprised me. For years I’ve been hearing that calcium supplements cause arterial plaque, but apparently that is only true for men!
Post-menopausal women often need more calcium than they get from their diet… especially those on vegan diets who don’t eat lots of leafy greens or tofu made with calcium sulfate.
BTW, if you are vegan and using a nutrient tracker like cronometer.com, be aware that your calcium needs will be about half of what is recommended, because numbers are based on meat eaters. The highly-acidic meat-based diet requires a lot more calcium to keep the blood alkaline.
From FoodRevolution.org:
Vegan postmenopausal women may particularly benefit from taking calcium supplements. The Adventist Health Study 2 tracked more than 34,000 people for an average of 8 years. During the study, 679 hip fractures occurred. Vegan women were found to have a 55% higher risk of hip fractures than nonvegetarians.
Interestingly, this increased risk was not observed in men. However, among vegan women who were supplemented with both calcium and vitamin D, the elevated risk disappeared, putting their fracture risk on par with that of women following other dietary patterns, including omnivores.
The researchers also found that “high intake of supplemental calcium was linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease death in men but not in women.”
So ladies, make sure you are getting the calcium you need, particularly as you get older. The best plant food sources of calcium I’ve found are leafy greens and tofu made with calcium sulfate (make sure it is organic and non-GMO certified to avoid glyphosate and GMOs).
If you choose to take a supplement, make sure it is derived from plants, not inorganic minerals.
I’ve been avoiding tofu, because so much soy is now contaminated with GMOs, but this article has inspired me to eat organic tofu more often.
Compare labels to find the organic tofu brand with the highest calcium content. (And don’t forget to get enough magnesium to balance the calcium — most people can benefit from supplemental magnesium, since it is now deficient in most modern farm soils.)

The Great Olive Oil Debate
Twelve health experts weigh in on olive oil. Bottom line, extra virgin olive oil may have some health benefits when used in moderation (about 1 tablespoon per day), but like any other oil, it appears to damage endothelial cells and should be avoided if you have heart disease.
I like Dr. Barnard’s answer: “But even ‘healthier’ oils and fats have the same high calorie content, and they all contribute to insulin resistance and hormonal problems, so minimizing them is a good idea.”

Mammograms — Helpful or Harmful?
Heads up ladies! Your doctor may not be up on the latest studies on mammograms.
From NaturalHealth365:
After several studies, Cornell University determined people who are exposed to ionizing radiation emitted from machines like the mammogram machine place themselves at risk for breast cancer. They also stated, “… female breast tissue is highly susceptible to radiation effects” as it “is one of the most sensitive tissues to the carcinogenic action of ionizing radiation.” They also revealed that it takes a minimum of five to 10 years for radiation-induced breast cancer to develop.
Finally, they concluded that greater levels of radiation exposure lead to a greater risk of breast cancer. Every time a woman is exposed to this form of radiation, she is placing herself at higher risk – especially if the screening is done when there is estrogen stimulation and tissue proliferation that occurs during monthly menstrual cycles.
Do your own research and make an informed decision rather than blindly following advice your doctor gives you. After all, doctors are just people with their own biases and blind spots, though they can be immensely helpful in some situations.

Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching
Dr. Greger has long been warning us about an upcoming pandemic caused by factory farming.
Since the recent spread of bird flu, he has made his book, Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching, available for free.

Warning About Antibiotics
Speaking of bird flu, one of the biggest contributors to pandemics on farms is the overcrowding of animals in unnatural conditions where diseases spread like wildfire. Farmers use massive amounts of antibiotics in an attempt to control disease, and also to make animals fatter.
Any guess where all those antibiotics end up? They are found in animal products and even in our drinking water (hmmm… any chance our obesity epidemic is related?)
Not only do these drugs make animals (and people) fatter, there is evidence that they can undermine your health or even kill!
From NaturalHealth365:
Antibiotics linked to stroke, heart attack, and permanent nerve damage
One of the many medical studies linking these drugs to potentially fatal complications was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine. It shows that the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics can lead to serious medical complications involving the heart that can lead to potentially fatal or debilitating conditions of heart attack, stroke, and paralysis.
For example, commonly prescribed antibiotics, like Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox, are associated with aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm. These drug side effects involving the heart can be deadly. They occur when the main artery exiting the heart weakens, ballooning out, a medical situation known as aortic aneurysm that can often result in it bursting or tearing apart, a condition known as aortic dissection.
I know from personal experience that the Cipro I was given for a tooth infection really messed up my digestive system for many months. Who knows what it did to my heart and nerves? Live and learn, as my mom loved to say.
