Bernadette — Spring blossomsMessage from Bernadette Wulf

Greetings,

Happy Beltaine!

It’s the merry merry month of May and I am really enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather. I hope you are too.

April was quite a month, technology wise. Seems like things just wanted to go wrong. All eight of my websites got hacked, but don’t worry. It is safe to visit them now, thanks to Aamir N at fiverr.com who cleaned them all up. Pretty stressful, though.

I’ve just been listening to the Food Revolution Summit and hearing all about the massive negative impact of animal agriculture on our forests, our fresh water supplies, methane pollution, wildlife habitat and on and on. Episode 8 is really powerful.

If most people (and dogs) don’t stop eating animal products soon, we are going to have a really big mess on our hands. It is simply not sustainable. Come on folks! We have so many other options now. There is no excuse to keep raising massive numbers of animals, especially in factory farm conditions. Can we just STOP?

I don’t want to rant, but it really does matter, so it is hard not to. Aside from being much better for our health, a plant foods diet can improve just about every environmental crisis we are facing today.

This Month

We have some really fascinating articles this time, I think, including: the best time to eat, how adrenaline protects the brain and how to support it, a funny repost about curry, and a reminder to make sure you get enough selenium in your diet.

Until next time, may you thrive and prosper in joy, love and peace.

WHEN You Eat Matters

We often focus on WHAT to eat to stay healthy, but did you know that WHEN you eat can also make a big difference in your health?

Here’s what Dr. Greger of nutritionfacts.org discovered:

The same meal eaten at the wrong time of day can double blood sugar.

We’ve known for more than half a century that our glucose tolerance—the ability of our body to keep our blood sugars under control—declines as the day goes on.

Doubling blood sugar can lead to weight gain and risk of diabetes. According to this article, the calories we eat in the evening count a lot more than calories we eat in the morning. So skipping breakfast is one of the worst things you can do if you want to lose weight.

Eating after 8 PM seems to be the worst possible time to eat, especially if you are eating refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar products), because they will cause blood sugar to go way up. If you are also eating a high-fat diet, the fat will block insulin receptors in your cells from using that excess sugar and you will probably gain weight and may eventually end up with type 2 diabetes.

Adrenaline and brain functionAdrenaline & the Brain

I found this article really fascinating.

It explains:

  • why people tend to wake up around 3 AM
  • why people gain weight even while they sleep
  • why people have fits of anger
  • why people grind their teeth (guilty as charged)
  • why creative people with ADHD may need more whole food carbohydrates
  • and how adrenaline works to provide the brain with the glucose it so desperately needs.

From PlattWellness.com:

Other than preparing the body for danger, the primary role of adrenaline is to provide sugar for the brain. The brain utilizes more sugar per weight than any other area of the body. When the brain runs out of fuel, people experience a profound sense of sleepiness which is called hypoglycemia. Classically, this occurs between 3-4 pm when insulin levels are peaking, or after eating, or when people are in a car either as a driver or as a passenger. A low level of sugar in the brain automatically sends an alert to the adrenal glands via the sympathetic nervous system to release adrenaline.

This article is too full of vital information to just give a brief synopsis here. Please read it for yourself. It is not long and it will be well worth your time. I’m sure you know someone who could benefit from the information, even if you don’t have adrenaline issues yourself.

curry funCurry Can Be Funny

I’m sharing this post again, because I just happened to see it when I got a “broken link alert” for the page it was on. I thought you would enjoy it as much as I did,

(Good thing I had just swallowed my tea, or I would have sprayed it all over my computer.)

Here it is:

From naturalhealth365.com:

A 2018 randomized controlled trial published in the peer-reviewed journal Foods found that eating 6 to 12 grams of curry powder with a meal was associated with reduced hunger and a reduced desire to eat among men.

I’ve never minded eating among men, even when dining on Indian food. In fact I rather enjoy it with the right men.

All humor aside, it does appear that curry spices have a lot of amazing benefits. Good thing they are so delicious. Every brand of curry powder has a slightly different blend of spices, but they generally include turmeric, coriander, and chili pepper.

Here are some of the positive effects of curry, from naturalhealth365.com:

  • Improved blood flow
  • Better cholesterol levels
  • Better blood sugar control
  • Reduced hunger
  • Reduced risk of oxidative stress

Rich source of seleniumAre You Getting Enough Selenium?

Selenium is often overlooked in nutritional recommendations, but is is a necessary nutrient that many people lack in their diets.

We don’t need much of it. One or two Brazil nuts per day will supply plenty — but don’t eat more than four or you might get a toxic amount of selenium!

When researchers looked at only those subjects whose selenium levels placed them in the lowest quartiles for serum selenium levels, they observed an adjusted 43 percent increase in the risk of death from any cause and a 56 percent increased risk of cardiovascular-related death when compared to the rest of the study’s subjects with higher serum selenium levels.

Selenium, aside from preventing death, is also important for immune function. If you find that you are picking up bugs more than usual, try increasing your selenium intake.
