Message from Bernadette Wulf

Health Nutrition Coach Bernadette WulfGreetings!

Aside from my illustrious speaking career (LOL, sorry it’s over now) I’ve been working furiously on completing my Whole Food Whole Family 30 Day Challenge. It was a whole lot of work, but well worth it – and I already received a great testimonial from one of my beta testers:

I have to say it’s been life changing in the best way possible! I thank you deeply for taking me on this wonderful journey in such a gentle, fun, informative and effective way. Doing it slowly over a month helped me to digest the material in “bite sized pieces.” – Ruth

Now I can take some time to enjoy my family visitors and get back to cleaning up my garden before the blackberries, borage and lemon balm take over the vegetable beds.

This month we have some important information about bone health, for women and men too. The prostate article is for men and the women who love them and the article about thyme is important for everyone. There are a lot of strange and inconclusive reports floating around, but we can be sure that drinking thyme water will prepare us for whatever comes next!

To your health and happiness!

I’ve always had suspicions about pharmaceutical claims that so many women need drugs to keep their bones from falling apart after menopause. Sure, there is a relatively small percentage of women who actually do have frail bones, but even then it doesn’t seem like pharmaceuticals are the best option.

When I saw this article from Dr. McDougall, it all started making sense. Menopausal women don’t need all those minerals in their bones anymore. They won’t be having children, so the extra minerals are naturally released.

Osteopenia is a natural thinning of the bones that occurs as women age and does not result in unprovoked fractures. To repeat, this is a “natural thinning of the bones.” The mineral content of bones decreases due to physiological changes intended to maintain the highest efficiency of a woman’s body. Here is why it works this way: The biologic purpose of a woman is to reproduce offspring. To accomplish this, during her reproductive years she must store large amounts of minerals, including calcium, in her bones for the future growth of her fetus and for producing her breast milk for two years postpartum. Assessing her bones with a BMD test during these times will detect a plentiful supply of minerals.

After menopause a woman no longer needs these extra depots of minerals; they become unnecessary baggage. In the interest of efficiency, her body sheds the excess, and as expected, her BMD is found to be much diminished. Thus, she fails the test when she is compared with an inappropriate and unrealistic norm. “Normal” is defined by the bone status of a healthy 30-year-old adult female in her prime reproductive years.

Dr. McDougall goes on to say that pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for women with osteoporosis actually cause the bones to become more brittle!

So what is the best way to support and even remineralize your bones? You guessed it – a whole food plant-based diet rich in alkaline minerals from fresh fruits and vegetables. It is the acid forming foods like meat, eggs, sodas, coffee and refined foods that really leach necessary minerals from your bones. When you eat too may acid-forming foods, the only way your body can maintain the all-important alkalinity of your blood is to pull calcium from your bones.

And, by the way, drinking milk and eating cheese will only make your bones weaker. Osteoporosis is most common in countries with the highest dairy consumption. Why? Because dairy is high in phosphorus which has to be balanced with calcium.

Again the calcium will be leached from your bones, unless you are also eating plenty of calcium-rich foods like collard greens and kale. The best choice for bone health is simply to avoid animal products and refined foods and stick to whole plant foods.

Protecting Prostate Health

CholesterolBenign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland affects roughly a quarter of all men by age 55, and by age 80, ninety percent show signs of this condition.

Though not life threatening, it can cause “difficulty urinating, diminished urine stream, frequent urination at night, and an uncomfortable feeling of fullness in the bladder even after urination has occurred; the condition can also cause bladder stones.”

Fortunately, there are several natural ways to support your prostate. From naturalhealth365:

Saw Palmetto

In a double-blind study published in 1996 in Prostate, over a thousand men diagnosed with BPH were given either saw palmetto or Proscar for six months.  By using the International Prostate Symptom Score – as well as measuring peak urinary flow rate – researchers concluded that saw palmetto was as effective as Proscar in reducing symptoms.

In a year-long double-blind study published in 2002 in European Urology saw palmetto extracts performed as well as the prescription drug tamsulosin in reducing BPH symptoms and caused fewer side effects.

Nettle root:

In a six-month double-blind trial published in 2005 in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy, researchers found that nettle root extracts worked better than placebo to relieve BPH symptoms, including improving urinary flow rate and postvoid residual urine volume.  They concluded that nettle extracts were “beneficial” in BPH treatment but called for further confirmatory research.

Pygeum

In a large double-blind, multi-center study published in 1990 in the German medical journal Wien Klin Wochenschr, pygeum significantly improved residual urine volume, urinary flow rate, voided volume, and nighttime urination.  It also increased bladder elasticity and improved prostatic secretions.  Like saw palmetto and nettle root, pygeum is rich in beta-sitosterol.

Grass pollen

According to Langone NYU Medical Center, a combination of rye, timothy, and corn pollen extracts have been shown to significantly improve prostate symptoms and reduce prostate size, possibly eliminating the need for surgery.  In fact, in one study, grass pollen worked better than pygeum; more research is needed.

Important Benefits of Thyme Water

thymeDrinking thyme water and thyme tea is becoming a popular new trend, because they are potent anti-viral medicines.

Though the Medical Medium has to appear somewhat neutral about the recent health challenge that starts with a C and its prevention treatments, he has mentioned repeatedly that this challenge and related ones won’t be over anytime soon.

Aside from his standard advice to drink celery juice and take zinc sulfate and vitamin C to boost immunity, he has recently been promoting thyme water and thyme tea made from fresh thyme sprigs.

Not only is thyme a potent anti-viral, he says:

Thyme has some of the highest antioxidant levels among herbs. It is packed with bioflavonoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and naringenin which have powerful effects on eliminating free-radicals and other disease producing substances from the body.

One of the benefits of thyme is that it can help protect us from the possible shedding of proteins or RNA from people who have received the “prevention via needle,” if you know what I mean.

Reports of some very strange symptoms have doctors baffled and it is not clear what is causing them or how they may be triggered.

The theory is that “needled” people may be shedding something that can cause blood clotting or hemorrhaging, or extreme menstrual cycles that go on for weeks with heavy bleeding, spotting in post-menopausal women, and even endometriosis and infertility.

Though most people seem to have few to no side effects (so far), there have been several reports of people, particularly women, who have started hemorrhaging spontaneously after being with someone who has had the “treatment,” and even a dog that died of hemorrhaging after being petted.

Until we know more, about what is causing this, I would urge continued social distancing and mask wearing when indoors with anyone who is not part of your “pod” or who has received the “treatment.”

This is particularly concerning, since many people who have had the “treatment” choose to believe that they are immune to any risks and that they pose no risk to others. Since this is all experimental, we really have no way of knowing if that is true or not yet, so I would recommend erring on the side of caution.

The good news is that thyme will stay in your system for three days, so you won’t have to drink it as often as you would if using other herbs.

Please do everything you can to get the heavy metals out of your body, keep your fats low, and cut out the foods that feed viruses: eggs, dairy, pork, gluten, soy, corn, canola – and keep your immune system as strong as possible.
