Calling in the New DawnGreetings!

What an amazing time we are living through, right? Even though I lived through the tumultuous 60s, I can’t remember things ever being so chaotic and confusing, or such radical divisions over simple things like wearing masks and social distancing.

It may seem like all hell is breaking loose, and in some ways it is, but I think it is all part of the dark before the dawn. Chaos always paves the way for a new kind of order and my sense is that our new order will be much better than the old.

In fact (this is for my magical peeps only), I’ve been working with Merlin on my long awaited Merlin’s Path course that I plan to launch very soon. It’s all about delving into Arthurian lore, exploring the realm of Avalon, working with the faeries, and actively participating in the dawning of a new and better reality for all life on planet Earth. If that triggers your interest, hop on over to my web page to sign up for more information.

This month we are taking a look at “food safe” plastics, essential oils that can fight viruses and cancer, the truth about quercetin, how different fats affect blood sugar spikes and inflammation, and toxins lurking in herbal supplements – plus where to find the best nontoxic supplements.

As always, this newsletter is a labor of love. I’ve been publishing it monthly for over 10 years free of charge, because I want you to have the most up to date health information available. I hope what you learn here will support your health and vitality so you have the energy to bring your unique gifts to the world.

DIY cooking avoids BPA and BPSAre BPA-Free Plastics Safe?

Funny how the food industry keeps trying to fool us. We protest against BPA and they give us BPS. It is presented as safe, but it may be be even more toxic than BPA.

From nutritionfacts.org:

As you can see at 1:50 in my video, we’ve known BPA significantly suppresses testosterone production, and, from “the first report describing BPS and BPF adverse effects on physiologic function in humans,” we know those compounds do, too. Well, kind of. The experiments were performed on the testicles of aborted human fetuses. But, the bottom line is that BPS and BPF seem to have “antiandrogenic anti-male hormone effects that are similar to those of BPA.” So when you’re assured you shouldn’t worry because your sales slip is BPA-free, the thermal paper may just contain BPS instead. What’s more, BPS receipts may contain up to 40 percent more BPS than they would have contained BPA. So BPA-free could be even worse. In fact, all BPA-replacement products tested to date released “chemicals having reliably detectable EA,” estrogenic activity.

The best option is avoiding plastics as much as possible by preparing our own meals from whole organic foods. However, that can be time consuming and some people are really challenged by cooking – especially as they adapt to whole plant food cooking. Even though I was a vegetarian cook for retreat centers for 10 years, I still had to go through a big adjustment in learning to cook vegan and Medical Medium compatible meals. After 5 years I’m still learning how to make more foods that omnivores will enjoy.

My advice is to find a few simple recipes that you like that fit your diet requirements. Ethnic foods are usually easily adaptable for home cooking with whole foods. Once you get those down you can add more recipes when you get inspired to try something new.

Keep it simple and save the complicated recipes for when you want to play around in the kitchen… if ever. Get into batch cooking and store prepared dishes in your freezer for when you don’t have the time or inclination to cook. Find a cooking buddy to cook with, or trade off making meals with a friend. You can do this!

Before long, you may find that you rarely use anything in a plastic container.

essential oils for viruses & cancer treatmentEssential Oils, Viruses & Cancer

What do Thyme, Oregano, Lemon Balm, Star Anise, Tea Tree & Eucalyptus have in common? Their essential oils can help prevent or even heal cancer, viruses and other inflammatory diseases. They are safe when used correctly and they even smell good.

Just be careful when using essential oils around cats. Always research the oils you plan to use if you have cats in the house – especially if you plan to diffuse them. Some oils can kill or make cats very sick, because they don’t have the ability to detox from them.

Also, when using essential oils on the skin, always dilute them in a neutral carrier oil like almond or coconut oil (except lavender oil can be used straight). Test for possible reactions on a small spot on your skin before using on large areas.

From naturalhealth365.com:

Essential oils contain a wealth of beneficial compounds, flavonoids and phenols – including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, carvacrol and thymol.  Research has shown that these potent polyphenols have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Dark cherries are high in qurecetinThe Quercetin Question

There has been a lot in the news about quercetin recently. It is claimed to fight viruses, particularly the COVID-19 virus, but is there any truth to those claims? Apparently yes.

Quercetin appears to help the body use zinc to ward off viruses. Since it is a safe and inexpensive plant product, it can’t hurt to add it to your arsenal of anti-viral protocols.

From naturalhealth365.com:

The scientists cited a study in which quercetin protected patients against dying from severe complications associated with H1N1 infection – and referred to cell studies in which quercetin showed an “obvious” inhibitory effect for both the H1N1 and H3N2 viruses.

[ ] Because quercetin is a pigment, it reveals its presence in foods that are (naturally) intensely colored. It is found in particularly good supply in apples, dark cherries, red grapes, cocoa, leafy greens and green tea.

If you don’t like taking supplements, you can always load up on deeply colored fruits and vegetables, though you will probably also have to take a zinc supplement for viral protection. Zinc sulfate is the preferred form (without additives like citric acid). Our soils are now so depleted of zinc that almost everyone is deficient in this important mineral.

I personally noticed a huge improvement in my immune function when I started taking zinc a few years ago. Now I just take a little extra zinc when I feel like I might be coming down with something and I feel good as new within a few hours.

Which fats spike blood sugar most?Inflammation and Blood Sugar Spikes

I find the whole subject of blood sugar and insulin resistance fascinating. Did you know that whole food plant fats have a much different effect on blood sugar spikes than animal fats? And that, according to Dr. Greger, the higher the blood sugars spike, the more free radicals are produced?

Free radicals are associated with human disease [inflamation – Ed.], including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and many others. They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage, according to Christopher Wanjek, the Bad Medicine columnist for Live Science.

From Dr. Greger at NutritionFacts.org, for example:

If you add butter and cheese to white bread, white potatoes, white spaghetti, or white rice, you can sometimes even double the insulin reaction. If you add half an avocado to a meal, however, instead of worsening, the insulin response improves, as it does with the main whole plant food source of fat: nuts.

Strange, isn’t it? Looks like the typical American meat and potatoes diet is a recipe for creating inflammation, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. No wonder close to half the U.S. population is using prescription medications for these and similar diseases.

Of course, minimizing all fats in the diet and eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is the ideal way to control blood sugar. Even plant fats can clog the arteries, decrease oxygen in the blood, and cause insulin resistance in the cells. Starches are best eaten without any fats at all, and several hours after a fatty meal.

I love the Medical Medium advice to stick to fat free mornings so your liver has a chance to keep detoxing as long as possible. The longer you can go each day without eating concentrated fats (avocado, nuts, seeds, oils & animal products) the better your liver will function and the more your body can detox.

You only need 10 to 20% of your calories from fats (omega 3 & 6 specifically) which will feel like very little if you’ve been following most diets. It can take several months to adapt your tastebuds to a low fat diet, but it is well worth the effort.

The easiest way I have found to train your tastebuds to enjoy less fatty foods is to start with fat free mornings. Gradually increase the time you stay off fats each day. Then start cutting back on fats at dinner time. Eventually greasy, high-fat foods will start to taste unpleasant and you’ll know you’ve shifted your tastes in a positive way.

Toxins in herbal supplementsToxins in Your Supplements?

Yikes! I had no idea that 90% of herbal supplements could have toxic heavy metals, mycotoxins or pesticides in them.

From nutritionfacts.org:

There is also inadvertent contamination with potentially hazardous contaminants, such as heavy metals and pesticides in 90 percent of herbal supplements tested, as you can see at 2:09 in my video. Mycotoxins, potentially carcinogenic fungal toxins like aflatoxin, were found in 96 percent of herbal supplements. Milk thistle supplements were the worst, with most having more than a dozen different mycotoxins.

That is one really good reason to use the safe supplements listed on the Medical Medium preferred supplement page.
