Message from Bernadette Wulf

Celebrating summer wellnessGreetings!

I’m hanging onto the last day of August, because I don’t want to let summer go. It has been such a beautiful summer and NO SMOKE so far this year, knock on wood!

It is very sad to hear about the fires in the Arctic and the Amazon and I wish the best for all the animals and indigenous people of those areas.

It is hard to witness, but I also know that things are not as bad a they may seem. The world is changing rapidly for the better on a subtle level. Unfortunately, these changes are also shaking up the old order and pushing a lot of negative events into the spotlight. Dark secrets long hidden are now being revealed and it’s not a pretty picture.

My advice – do whatever you can to help and heal these disturbing situations, and then focus on making your life and your community the best it can possibly be. The more you can tap into appreciation and enthusiasm, the more harmonious the world will become.

For my Celtic Mystery School fans, I have been starting to work on a new course, tentatively called Merlin’s Path: Exploring the Mysteries of Avalon – a subject near and dear to my heart. I’ll let you know more when it is ready to launch.

Meanwhile, enjoy the bounty of information this month: the wonders of garlic, a hidden benefit of organic produce, the best way to build and maintain muscles, what’s great about celery, and finally an excellent little video from Dr. Greger on the truth about Keto & Cancer – you might be surprised!

As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send your requests, suggestions, questions, or any sort of feedback. I do appreciate hearing from my readers. – Please do not hit reply to this email, but use this link Email Bernadette to contact me.

To your health and happiness!

garlic for your heartGreat News About Garlic!

Do you love garlic? If you do you are in luck, because it doesn’t just make food taste fantastic. It is one of the best foods to protect your heart and liver.

Here are some of the benefits of garlic (in addition to increased longevity) according to naturalhealth365:

  • Improved immunity: [ ] kills microbes and helps prevent infections.
  • Lower blood pressure: [ ] reduces blood pressure as well as prescription medicines.
  • Blood clot prevention: [ ] linked to a reduced risk of blood clots.
  • Protects against heart disease [ ]
  • Reduces cholesterol [ ]
  • Boosts liver health: Garlic helps the liver produce essential enzymes needed for detoxification, and it can help remedy nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well.

That’s a lot of benefits from this potent little bulb. Read about how garlic promotes longevity and more – https://www.naturalhealth365.com/eating-garlic-mortality-3095.html

And There’s This… Lemon, Garlic & Blood Pressure

Sounds like combining garlic with lemon can make it even more potent. Again from naturalhealth365:

participants who received garlic and lemon juice saw a significant reduction in total cholesterol.  It also resulted in blood pressure improvements, and a reduced body mass index, additional benefits of the lemon juice and garlic combination.

Dust off your garlic press and lemon squeezer and bypass the pharmaceuticals! Of course, you can’t expect garlic and lemon to counteract a diet overloaded with fats, junk food, and animal products. That would be a miracle!

Apples for healingWhy Choose Organic Apples?

Have you heard claims that organic is not any better than standard agribusiness produce? I have, and I find it laughable. It seems pretty obvious that feeding plants a diet of chemical fertilizers based on only 3 main nutrients, while repeatedly dousing them with toxic sprays would have to yield an inferior product in every way… except maybe appearance.

Turns out that even the bacteria that live on the outside of organic produce are better for us. No surprise, but it’s always nice to have the science to back up what we already know. Right?

From naturalhealth365:

When comparing the organic apples to conventional ones, every area of the organic apple had great bacterial diversity, and the distribution of microbes was more even in the organic apples. The organic apples also were dominated by Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus – which are both known to benefit gut health.

While conventional apples had about the same number of bacterium, the most common type was Buckholderiarles, which can be pathogenic to people. Conventional apples also contained low amounts of Escherichia-Shigella, another human pathogenic kind of bacteria.

Ideally, we would all be eating unwashed organic produce right from our gardens to get the best assortment and quantity of gut-healing bacteria. Even eating fresh-picked organic produce a few times a year can be a great way to repopulate your gut with the good bacteria you need.

build muscle with carbsBuild Muscles with Carbs

Many of us have been brainwashed to believe that we have to load up on protein and cut way back on carbohydrates in order to build muscle. That is the opposite of the truth!

Whether you are intent on building bulging muscles or just trying to maintain the muscle mass you already have as you get older, it is super important to give your body enough whole food carbs.

This article from jackedonplants.co.uk explains it well:

Many low-carb fans argue that carbs make you fat because they spike insulin levels which directs glucose into fat cells.

Yes, carbohydrates cause insulin to spike, but no, insulin itself does not cause fat cells to get bigger (that happens if you’ve got excess calories – composed of any kind of macronutrient – in your system). [And the most concentrated source of food calories is fat. – Ed.]

But you know what insulin itself does cause to get bigger?

Muscle cells.

When insulin binds to receptors in your muscle cells, it signals to their ribosomes to start making more protein [from the amino acids in your diet – Ed.], which is then turned into muscle tissues. In the absence of insulin, this muscle building process doesn’t happen. So if you want BIGGER muscles, you need insulin.

Besides kicking off protein-muscle synthesis, insulin helps inhibit the breakdown of muscle tissue.

[ ]… The [muscle building] industry pushes the protein subject hard but the truth is most whole food plant based carbs contain high quality proteins, and when combined in a balanced carb rich diet you also benefit from a full amino acid profile that is more bioavailable than animal protein.

Too much fat (which is usually combined with protein in whole foods) blocks the cells from properly using insulin to trigger muscle building. This can also lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. That’s why I think the 20% fat recommendation in the article is a little too high. Anthony William recommends around 15%.

Of course, diabetics will have to monitor their insulin levels. However, the likelihood of getting diabetes actually increases on a high protein/high fat diet. Lower fat/plant-based diets have been shown to cure type 2 diabetes and improve type 1 in some cases. So, lowering fats and eating more whole food carbs can be a win win for muscle building and managing diabetes.

benefits of celery juiceWhy Celery Juice is Catching On

Now that celery juice is becoming a big fad, some people are out to tell you there are no studies to prove it offers any benefits. Actually there are, as referenced in this article from naturalhealth365:

Beyond destroying cancer cells, drinking celery juice or eating the vegetable offers many other significant health benefits, including:

  • Fights inflammation [ ]
  • Heals the digestive tract [ ]
  • Offers liver protection: [ ] …studies have found that celery helps to improve liver function and reduce the buildup of fat within the liver.
  • Prevents UTIs [ ]
  • Lowers blood pressure [ ]
  • Fights thirst and dehydration [ ]

It would be great to have more studies, but that may not happen any time soon, because we don’t have big money interests pushing celery and trying to prove it has benefits.

Bottom line, try 16 oz. of pure celery juice on an empty stomach every day for six months and see how you feel. I did and it felt great. I’ve been drinking it sporadically since then, but I want to get back to the daily dose. I don’t remember ever feeling so well hydrated in my life.

The Truth About Ketogenic Diets and Cancer

When it comes to scientific studies, Dr. Greger is my go-to guy for two reasons.

  1. He and his team review every single nutrition study that comes out in the English language and discard the faked ones (and there are many).
  2. He has no financial interest in any organization or company promoting food or nutrition, so he is about as unbiased as possible.

That’s why I always listen up when he shares a new blog post or video. I thought this was one of his best. It describes WHY a ketogenic diet can be dangerous for cancer patients, and the rest of us too.

There must be some really big money behind the Keto craze, because I am constantly bombarded with spam emails pushing it. Good thing I know better than to take their word for it – thanks in part to Dr. Greger! (Sorry for the gross image.)
