Message from Bernadette Wulf
Here in Sonoma County, we are seeing the very first signs of Spring in the bursting of flowering quince blossoms, along with yellow acacia flowers and pussy willows. So sorry that some of you are dealing with extreme freezing temperatures right now. Stay cozy. Your Spring will come soon.
I’ve been reading some disturbing reports over the years about how these bizarre freezes, droughts, and erratic weather patterns are at least partially caused by human activities. Even if you are what is known as a “climate denier,” can you say that there is not a shred of doubt about it in your mind? And if there is even a tiny bit of doubt about humans contributing to climate change, wouldn’t you rather take action – just in case?
There are lots of lists of things you can do to lower your personal carbon footprint, like this one: https://davidsuzuki.org/what-you-can-do/top-10-ways-can-stop-climate-change/
I find it odd that most of these lists do not emphasize what may be the top three most effective (and perhaps easiest) ways you can dramatically reduce your footprint:
- Eliminate meat and dairy from you diet (not only for your own health, but for the health of our planet) – here is one of the more conservative articles on that https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-34899066 – Visit my Plant Based for Life website to learn how to stay healthy on a plant based diet.
- Avoid air travel in particular, and reduce motor vehicle use as much as possible.
- Plant trees and stop using disposable paper products that require cutting trees as much as you can. You can even have people plant trees for you by giving a small monthly donation to https://www.treesisters.org/ – I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful TreeSisters organization! You get so much “bang for your buck,” even with a small donation, and you help indigenous people at the same time.
We have some exciting articles this month on the healing powers of a tiny black seed, a totally non-toxic option that works better than DEET, a fun video on recognizing signs of nutrient deficiencies, how flax seed can help protect us from radiation, and some great pain-relieving foods we can substitute for ibuprofen. All good news!
And one more rather amusing thing I want to share – Celery Juice Is Really Catching ON! Thanks to Anthony William, the Medical Medium, celery juice is taking the health world by storm. The up side is that thousands of people are feeling better and better, including me. The down side is that last month my local store ran out of organic celery! And last week I had to pay over $16 for three bunches!!! It is worth it, though.
Listen up farmers! Celery juice is here to stay, so plant lots more celery. Thousands of people are going through a bunch a day and more people are catching on all the time.
As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send your requests, suggestions, questions, or any sort of feedback. I always appreciate hearing from my readers – Please do not reply to this email, but use this link Email Bernadette to contact me.
To your health and happiness!

Black Seed for Hypothyroid
Readers of the Medical Medium material know that thyroid issues usually go along with EBV virus, so it is a great idea to follow his advice for healing, but here’s another promising article.
According to the greenmedinfo.com article:
A powerful new randomized clinical trial reveals that the ancient healing food known as nigella sativa (aka “black seed”), once known as the “remedy for everything but death,” may provide an ideal treatment for the autoimmune thyroid condition known as Hashimoto’s disease, which is the most common cause of hypothyroidism.

Coconut Extract Better than DEET
DEET, in spite of its toxic ingredients, has long been recommended by government and medical agencies as the best insect repellent, but it turns out that there is a better and safer way to ward off mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches and other biting insects.
From greenmedinfo.com:
Last month, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Research Service posted a bulletin with a surprising headline: Coconut Oil Compounds Repel Insects Better than DEET. This announcement followed the results from a study by USDA researchers published in the journal Scientific Reports, stating that fatty acids derived from coconut oil had long-lasting repellency against certain insects—an even better effect than the most widely-used insect repellent in the world.
Apparently, coconut oil itself is not the repellent, but it is specific fatty acids that were isolated in the oil. The article did not state whether this product is commercially available yet. However, essential oils such as litsea, lemongrass, ylang ylang, catnip, and citronella have been shown to be excellent at keeping mosquitoes at bay, particularly when mixed in a base of coconut oil.

Identifying Nutritional Deficiencies
Here’s an excellent video showing some ways to tell what you are missing in your diet. I don’t agree with all of his follow up videos and solutions, but this video is fascinating. You might discover some new information, or find an answer to something you’ve always wondered about. Check it out!
Flax Seed Protects Against Radiation
Given that we are exposed to radiation on a daily basis, from Fukushima to dental x-rays, it makes sense to eat foods that can help to protect us. It looks like flax is one of those foods.
From greenmedinfo.com:
A study from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that flaxseed may help protect lungs against the damage caused by radiation exposure. The researchers believe that flaxseed might also have a role in protecting other healthy tissues and organs before exposure to radiation and significantly reduces damage even after exposure.
If you have to receive radiation treatments, or even one or more of the various medical imaging tests, you might want to include more flax in your diet.

Ibuprofen Alternatives
Whenever possible, I prefer to avoid using drugs, whether over-the-counter or prescription. They are all toxic to some degree and side effects can often be worse than the problem you are treating. However, there are times when pain becomes almost unbearable and there is no point in suffering when you know there is a quick and easy remedy available. Ibuprofen is one of those remedies, but it comes with a cost.
WebMD lists the following possible side effects: Upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, or drowsiness, raised blood pressure, easy bruising/bleeding, hearing changes (such as ringing in the ears), mental/mood changes, unexplained stiff neck, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), vision changes, symptoms of heart failure (such as swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain), serious (possibly fatal) liver disease (dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes and skin), or allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Before grabbing that pill bottle, you might want to give one or more of these natural remedies a try.
From GreenMedInfo.com, here are a 5 clinically validated, natural alternatives worth considering:
-
Arnica [ ] was as effective as ibuprofen for relieving symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the wrist [ ].
-
Ginger [ ] was effective as ibuprofen for pain symptoms associated with difficult menstrual cycles.
-
Turmeric [ ] extracts were as effective as ibuprofen for relieving symptoms of knee osteoarthritis.
-
Thyme [ ] extract was as effective as ibuprofen in reducing pain and spasm symptoms associated with difficult menstrual cycles.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids [ ] helped neurosurgery patients reduce their need for medications, [ ] indicating palliative effects at least as effective as ibuprofen.
-
Cinnamon [ ] was as effective as ibuprofen for pain associated with difficult menstrual cycles (dysmenorrhea).
Headaches are one of the most common pains people relieve with ibuprofen, but I’ve found that a strong cup of coffee can work just as well without the risk. Find out what works for you and keep natural remedies on hand so you can try them before resorting to more dangerous drugs.
