vegan gluten free ginger cookiesGreetings and Happy Holidays!

No matter which holidays you celebrate, this can be an intense time of year. Sometimes that makes it hard to stick to a healthy diet. All the rich foods at parties and family gatherings can really test your resolve.

If you have trouble controlling yourself around food, try eating something wholesome and satisfying before the party or family gathering. Then you can choose mostly healthier foods like salads and vegetable dishes when you get there.

Bring your own healthy snacks and a main dish to share so you know you can eat something that fits your dietary needs. Learn how to make your favorite holiday foods with whole food ingredients.

I’ve been learning how to make delicious gluten free vegan cookies and breads through YumUniverse Gluten-Free Baking Academy. I highly recommend it, but you will have to wait until next year to join the classes. They are mostly whole food recipes for occasional treats. (If you are still breaking an addiction to baked goods, better to wait until your tastes have adapted to prefer vegetables and fruits.)

Articles this Month

Liver Rescue, the latest Medical Medium book, finally came out last month and I was NOT disappointed. In fact, out of dozens of health and diet books I’ve read, this one just might be the best of all. I can’t even begin to list all the answers I found in it – to questions I didn’t even know to ask. Read it! You will be glad you did.

There’s some good news about chocolate this month, especially raw cacao. Science has now discovered a connection between RA and cancer, that anyone who read the first Medical Medium book could have predicted. Then there is a really fascinating article about how different foods affect different organs, and even different parts of the organs – a good reminder to eat a wide variety of whole plant foods.

Finally, we have a long, but really interesting video of 4 top nutrition experts discussing the best possible diet. I know, I’m a real nerd when it comes to this stuff. I thought I’d share one of my nerdy favorites with you. Enjoy!

As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send your requests, suggestions, questions, or any sort of feedback. I always appreciate hearing from my readers – Email Bernadette

To your health and happiness!

Liver Rescue Book ReviewLiver Rescue – Best Health Book Ever (Maybe) Book Review

I just finished reading the new Liver Rescue book by Anthony William. What an amazing eye opener!

One important thing I learned is that you can really help your liver by avoiding all fats in the morning.

Your liver starts detoxing at around 2 or 3 am and keeps detoxing until you eat fat, so the longer you can go each day without eating fat, the more chance your liver will have to clear toxins out of your body.

That means avoiding nuts, seeds, avocado, plant milks, oils, and of course all animal products until lunch, or even later in the day. I was actually surprised at how often I was eating fatty foods in the morning when I started paying attention. Now that I am aware, I am changing that habit for sure.

There is lots more useful wisdom like that in this information packed book. Do yourself a favor and read it. Get it from the library if you can’t afford your own copy. It could save your life!

healthy chocolate may prevent fluGood News About Chocolate!

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Not only does it taste delicious, it can actually help you fight off flu according to this greenmedinfo.com article:

When choosing chocolate instead of a flu shot, make sure your chocolate is:

1. At Least 70% Dark.  The darker the chocolate the less sugar is added.  And sugar can be the difference between healthy chocolate and junk food.

2. Raw. The more cacao is processed, the more polyphenols and flavanols are destroyed.  So the best source of chocolate antioxidants comes from raw unprocessed dark chocolate. In fact, raw cacao has the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food.

2Organic.  Non-organic cocoa may contain residues of the dangerous herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), and other pesticides used in conventional farming.

3. Free Trade. Cacao crops are often unfairly traded, and have even been linked to child enslavement.

Another greenmedinfo.com article goes on to say:

In our new book, Chocolate: Superfood of the Gods, we reveal at least nine more important and surprising benefits of dark chocolate, including benefits for pregnant women, athletes and people who love to work out and exercise, and people who enjoy being out in the sun.

Of course they are not talking about your typical milk chocolate Hershey’s bar. The healthiest chocolate is raw cacao that does not include dairy or sugar. Use raw honey or maple syrup to sweeten. Yum!

Nutrition and arthritisThe Rheumatoid Arthritis & Cancer Connection

If you’ve been reading the Medical Medium books, especially the first one, you will immediately see the connection between RA and cancer. According to Anthony William, both diseases are caused by a virus. In the case of cancer, it is the combination of the virus with toxins in the system.

So here is an article from thetruthaboutcancer.com that points to the same idea, though they haven’t quite made the connection yet:

Article Summary

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a painful and often serious autoimmune disease that affects an estimated 1.5 million adults in the U.S.
  • The good news is that both Rheumatoid Arthritis and cancer are chronic conditions that can respond extremely well to dietary changes, lifestyle tweaks, and natural healing modalities which work with the body’s natural repair and healing mechanisms.
  • Women are more likely to be afflicted by Rheumatoid Arthritis than men. Most women begin to feel the effects of RA at a median age of 45, while men tend to get it later in life.
  • The cause of RA is epigenetic − meaning it is mostly caused by factors in a person’s environment. Toxic exposure, bad dietary choices, emotional wounding, chronic stress, and poor intestinal health are all contributors to heightened inflammatory responses that can lead to autoimmune disease.
  • Research has shown that people with RA are at a higher risk of both non-Hodgkin’s and Hodgkin’s disease as well as myeloma (a rare form of cancer that affects the white blood cells). Perhaps the biggest cancer risk for those with RA, however, are the medications that are typically prescribed to treat it: NSAIDS, DMARDs, Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) meds, and corticosteroid injections.

Healing fruits - Harvest season gratitudeWhy We Need Variety

Fascinating article! Did you know that different fruits and vegetables are good for different parts of the body, and even different parts of the same organ. From nutritionfacts.org:

Why does dietary diversity matter? As I discuss in my video Specific Receptors for Specific Fruits and Vegetables, different foods may affect different problems. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts are associated with lower risk of colon cancer in the middle and right side of our body, whereas risk of colon cancer further down on the left side of our body appears to be better lowered by carrots, pumpkins, and apples. So, “different F/V [fruits and vegetables] may confer different risks for cancer” of different parts of even the same organ.

Science & Diet – The Real Scoop

Excellent discussion of nutrition and health from four top experts in the field. If you are on the fence about plant-based nutrition (or have friends who are) take the time to watch this. It is long and it may make you feel like a health nerd, but I’m sure you will learn something valuable. I learned a few things myself.
