Healing fruits - Harvest season gratitudeGreetings and Happy Celtic New Year!

It was wonderful to see all the kids and families milling through my neighborhood last night in their Halloween costumes (especially my grandchildren who were the most adorable of all, of course). I feel SO lucky to live where I do – the perfect combination of dark and spooky, but very safe for the kids. I hope you also had a wonderful time.

I sometimes wonder if my readers think I post too many articles about cancer. It seems to come up in just about every newsletter. The reason is because cancer is such a growing threat in our toxic environment and the track record is not so good when it comes to cures. I lost both parents and several friends to cancer, even with the best medical care.

I just watched a friend die of cancer two days ago. In spite of all the heroic treatments the medical system could offer, his body just gave up. It hit me hard. After his diagnosis earlier this year, he had cleaned up his diet, but it was way too late. Don’t wait that long, please.

Give yourself the love and nurturing you need now. Get some exercise. Eat like you have cancer BEFORE you get it and you will improve your odds of never getting it… or if you do, your body will be in better shape to fight it off. Fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, are your very best friends when it comes to fighting cancer. Eat as many as you can every day.

Unlike the other top causes of death (heart disease, strokes, diabetes, kidney disease, respiratory diseases) which are predictably caused by poor diet and lifestyle choices most of the time, cancer is not so easily predictable. We are all exposed to so many toxins every day. Our bodies have a hard time coping. Add the constant assault of viruses and you can see why our immune systems might be overwhelmed.

Anyway, that’s why I post so many articles on cancer, in case you were wondering. This month we also have some great information on why NOT to take calcium supplements, causes of insomnia, healing your gums with tomatoes, and the super powers of sesame seeds.

Happy last harvest of the year and a healthy, abundant Thanksgiving to you!

As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send your requests, suggestions, questions, or any sort of feedback. I always appreciate hearing from my readers – Email Bernadette

To your health and happiness!

Apple seeds contain laetrileWonders of Laetrile

Laetrile or vitamin B-17 has been a very controversial subject in cancer treatment circles. Too much can be toxic, but we have to wonder if it is anywhere near as toxic as most chemotherapy drugs.

I’m including this article from thetruthaboutcancer.com so you can educate yourself and make your own decision about it. Here are some highlights:

  • Amygdalin, or B-17, is a type of purified nitriloside which was developed into a cancer treatment called Laetrile.
  • Laetrile contains 2 units of sugar, one unit of benzaldehyde, and one of cyanide, all tightly bound together.
  • When cyanide is locked chemically into a molecule of Laetrile, it is completely inactive and non-toxic.
  • Beta-glucosidase – which is only found significantly in cancer cells – can unlock the Laetrile molecule.
  • Medical and research professionals found that if Laetrile treatment was started early enough, cancer disappeared and patients recovered.
  • The FDA and other agencies have gone to great lengths to silence proponents of Laetrile, despite their remarkable success.

I hope you never have to make choices about how to proceed after a cancer diagnosis, but if you ever do, the people at thetruthaboutcancer.com have a lot of great information to share. Here’s the link to their article about laetrile – https://thetruthaboutcancer.com/laetrile-part-2

Save your bones - don't take inorganic calciumBones & Calcium

Doctors are constantly promoting calcium supplements, but check out this article from greenmedinfo.com before load up on calcium pills:

…we have discovered an extensive body of research indicating higher than normal bone density greatly increases the risk of malignant breast cancer, further calling into question the present day fixation on increasing bone density at any cost with highly toxic calcium supplements and drugs.

When you add that to the evidence that calcium supplements can cause brain damage and calcium deposits in your arteries, the risks start to look pretty scary. Here’s another greenmedinfo.com article on how calcium supplements can damage the brain –

Taking calcium supplements — even at low doses — linked to brain lesions in the first study of its kind.

Most calcium supplements are just plain bad news. The idea of taking calcium in pill or tablet form to “keep the bones strong” just doesn’t make that much sense given, first, that we are designed to get our calcium from food. Second, our bone is a living tissue, which requires vitamin C, amino acids, magnesium, silica, vitamins D and K, etc., not to mention regular physical activity, just as much as it does calcium.

The good news is that we can get plenty of calcium from our food, especially from leafy greens, beans, grains, nuts, seeds (especially sesame), and seaweeds. Calcium absorption is enhanced by adding acidic foods like lemon or lime juice or tomatoes. melatonin for healthy sleepInsomnia Causes

Sleep can be elusive sometimes, but unless we know what is keeping us awake, it is hard to know how to fix the problem. This article from medicalmedium.com explains a lot:

Between 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. your body does most of its healing. If you are able to sleep during that period, your body is healing at an accelerated rate. Even if you only catch 10 minutes, those 10 minutes will be potent. The restoration your body performs in that snippet of time will power you through on your path to healing. If you’re not able to sleep during this window, even lying down with your eyes closed will allow your body to continue healing.

Causes of insomnia can range from digestive issues to viruses to heavy metals in the brain! Find out more here – https://www.medicalmedium.com/blog/insomnia-sleep-issues

Tomatoes for Gum Disease

This video speaks for itself. Don’t be afraid of tomatoes! (Anthony William, the Medical Medium, also highly recommends tomatoes.)

Amazing sesame seedsOpen Sesame!

You’ve probably heard recommendations to eat ground flax seeds for the lignans and essential omega 3 fatty acids. That’s great advice, but we can also get lots of omega 3 from hemp and chia seeds, and I think they taste better. (Be sure to grind chia so you can digest the nutrients.)

For the lignans, sesame seeds beat flax hands down. More about why you need lignans. Sesame seeds also have other health benefits you should know about.

Here are a few benefits listed in the greenmedinfo.com article:

  • The [soccer] players that consumed sesame saw reduced muscle damage and oxidative stress, while improving aerobic capacity.
  • Two recent studies conducted on pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis confirm that supplementation with sesame seeds may be an effective adjunct therapy.
  • After 2 months of study, researchers found the patients who ate sesame seeds had significantly less pain than the control group.
  • Sesame is a significant source of protein, almost 20% by weight. It is a rich source of plant-based calcium, providing 9% of our U.S. RDA (recommended daily allowance). Sesame’s whole-plant form of calcium provides greater absorption and is far superior to inorganic forms of this nutrient. A 5-ounce serving provides a whopping 53% of the RDA of iron.

Not bad for a tiny seed. Sesame seeds are best consumed raw and ground, as in raw tahini, or you can grind them yourself in a coffee grinder. Tahini makes a great base for a salad dressing made with lemon juice, garlic, and enough water to make it pourable.

And yes, some sesame seeds are black, but I personally don’t like the taste of the black tahini – though it is higher in antioxidants.
