Message from Bernadette Wulf

Happy Halloween!Greetings!

Happy Halloween/Samhain!

It has been quite a month since I last posted. Massive fires ravaged several local neighborhoods here in Sonoma County, keeping us all on edge for a couple of weeks. We are all breathing a sigh of relief now that the fires are contained and smoke no longer fills the air, thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters who came from all over the world to help. Thank you wherever you are!

I know several people who lost their homes and all their possessions. Some have lost jobs, because their place of business burned. Putting their lives back together will be a long and arduous process. If you want to help out, here are a couple of organizations I donated to, because I know they are trustworthy and they do good work in the community – Redwood Empire Food Bank and UndocuFund (for undocumented residents who are not covered by FEMA).

A New Beginning

In the old Celtic calendar, Samhain (meaning summer’s end) is the end of the old year. All the hearth fires were extinguished and new fires were started from the bonfires of the new year celebrations. This is a time to let go of everything we don’t want to take with us into the new year and to remember what we really value and treasure in our lives.

It is also the time of the last harvest and giving thanks for the bounty in our lives. As we approach Thanksgiving here in America, I feel that I have a lot to be thankful for – a comfortable home, wonderful family and friends, abundance of organic food, creative pursuits that fill my life with purpose, and so much more. I hope everyone on the planet can find something to be grateful for in this season of harvest and thanksgiving.

I also want to give a special acknowledgement to all of our ancestors at this time of thinning veils between the worlds – ancestors of blood, ancestors of the lands we live on, and ancestors of our spiritual and cultural traditions. We are the product of the love of countless generations of ancestors.

Welcome November! I hope you will find something new and helpful in this newsletter.

Epstein-Barr and cancer - jumping supports lymphatic flowEpstein-Barr Virus & Cancer

Concerned about cancer? Looks like it’s not caused by your DNA! That is good news, because it means there are things we can do to protect ourselves.

According to Anthony William, the Medical Medium, almost all cancers are caused by a combination of viruses and environmental toxins. Unfortunately, thanks to the Industrial Revolution and the chemical industry, all of us are now inundated with toxins on a daily basis. From the air we breathe, to the plastic containers we eat and drink from, to the components of vaccines and prescription drugs, it has now become impossible to avoid contamination from heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

But these toxins apparently do not cause cancer on their own. Viruses, particularly Epstein-Barr, thrive on the toxins in our bodies and can eventually mutate into cancer cells, he says. Some of us were born with viruses passed down from our parents, or we may have picked them up from other people in our youth. Often, they have been mutating in our bodies for decades.

From Medical Medium article in Goop.com:

Ninety-eight percent of the time, cancer is caused by a virus and at least one type of toxin. There are many viruses that can be involved with cancer; the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of them. Ever heard of mononucleosis, also called glandular fever or “the kissing disease?” That’s an early stage of EBV, and it’s rampant, though the symptoms are often so mild that they aren’t diagnosed as mono. In a later stage, years after any mono symptoms have disappeared, and in combination with toxins, EBV is the virus responsible for thyroid cancer. (EBV is also responsible for breast cancer, liver cancer, almost all lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, women’s reproductive cancers, leukemia, and many more.)

So what can we do to stop this destructive cycle? Anthony William also provides the answers to this question. In his Medical Medium book, he outlines his anti-viral diet and his heavy metal detox protocol, which I have covered in a previous post.

My Plant-Based for Life! website is based on his dietary advice (along with that of Dr. Michael Greger), so click on over there if you are looking for the best anti-cancer diet. In a nutshell, Anthony William recommends:

  • lots of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • low fat
  • gluten free
  • vegan – or vegan plus up to one serving per day of grass fed, pasture raised, or wild, organic meat (not pork), including poultry or fish – that’s a standard serving, meaning 3 to 4 ounces (about the size of a deck of cards), not Texas barbecue sized portions.

The foods Anthony William says will feed viruses are eggs, dairy, pork, gluten, soy, corn, canola oil, beet sugar, MSG (including nutritional yeast and all “natural flavors”), citric acid, and of course all preservatives, food colorings, and other chemicals added to foods.

I would also highly recommend the Medical Medium 28 day (or longer) raw fruit and vegetable cleanse. I felt great after I did it, and I need to do it again soon.

Meat and Cancer Prevention

While we are on the subject of meat, Dr. Michael Greger has published quite a few scientific studies about the links between meat consumption and cancer. This video is particularly disturbing, showing how cancer-causing viruses can actually come from the meat itself, even if well cooked! Click on the Transcript button if you’d rather read it. Here’s another video (and transcript) on treating prostate cancer with a plant-based diet – https://nutritionfacts.org/video/treating-advanced-prostate-cancer-with-diet-part-1/

Healing fruits - Harvest season gratitude13 Fabulous Healing Fruits

For the past several years, many “health gurus” have been bashing fruit. They treat it like a dangerous food, because it contains CARBS – a big no no on the Keto and Paleo diets. (For more on those diets, visit my page about countering objections to a vegan diet.) That is really unfortunate, because fruits are some of the most healing foods on the planet. Furthermore, we NEED carbs for optimal health and brain function.

Sadly, I got caught up in the “dangerous fruit” hype for awhile and tried to limit my intake. Now I realize that fruits were never the problem. Refined and processed foods and high fat diets are much more dangerous. The combination of high sugar and high fat may be the worst of all. So yes, if you are on a high-fat diet, you might want to limit your fruit intake. But why would you choose a high-fat diet?

Fruits Are Nutrient Dense

Review the nutrient levels and healing properties of fruits compared to those in fats or oils and you can easily see how insane it is to load up on fats rather than fruits. Fats offer little more than calories, while fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that can be found in no other foods. Furthermore, fruits have unique healing properties.

Take a look at this list from greenmedinfo.com:

  1. Grapefruit – Infection
  2. Pineapple – Cancer
  3. Watermelon – Hypertension
  4. Cherry – Inflammation/Pain
  5. Lemon – Kidney Stones
  6. Papaya – Skin Ulcers
  7. Pomegranate – Hormones
  8. Kiwifruit – Cholesterol
  9. Cranberries – Cranberry
  10. Elderberry – Flu
  11. Coconut – Gastric Ulcers
  12. Plantain – Diarrhea
  13. Strawberries – Heart Disease

Of course we do need some fats for their Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. Ideally these would come from raw foods, because fats and oils are damaged by heat. The best sources are whole plant foods. There is even a fruit that is a good source of fat – the versatile avocado! Nuts and seeds are also high in healthy fats, along with minerals and vitamins. See my Good Fats – Bad Fats page for more information.

So include a little healthy fat in your diet and don’t be afraid to load up of fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s almost impossible to eat too many. Try the Medical Medium raw fruit and vegetable cleanse to really give your health a boost.

spirulina superfood Spirulina Superfood

There are not too many foods I would call super-foods, but spirulina is definitely in the running. Spirulina takes some getting used to. It is very dark green, with a bit of a slippery texture. You may have a green tongue and lips after eating it… at least for a little while. Anything you add it to will also turn green, but the flavor is mild, nutty, and not overpowering. It’s a good addition to a fruit smoothie, but I like to chew up the tablets with a handful of nuts.

I almost crave it if I miss a day. Not surprising, considering its amazing health benefits!

From liveinthenow.com:

Often referred to as a “sea vegetable” spirulina is a protein rich blue-green algae that contains health boosting omega fats, as well as powerful antioxidants. It is best known for its ability to detox the body, support liver health and deliver an antioxidant that can’t be found in any other food. Spirulina contains:

Phycocyanin, a unique antioxidant that provides powerful immune and healthy aging benefits

Chlorophyll, which supports cellular detoxification and body alkalinity

Carotenoids, including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, which protect the skin and eyes

Essential amino acids in a highly-digestible, easy-to-absorb form

Essential fatty acids, including hard-to-get gamma linoleic acid (GLA)

Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins that support brain and heart health

Trace minerals, including magnesium, selenium, zinc, calcium and others

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an important antioxidant enzyme

I don’t know all the science behind it, but I do know that eating two teaspoons of Hawaiian Spirulina every day has definitely made my fingernails grow so much stronger and faster! I would assume that also applies to my bones and hair, but it’s hard to tell.

Hawaiian Spirulina is one of the five foods in Anthony William’s heavy metal detox protocol (along with barley grass juice powder, cilantro, dulse, and wild Maine blueberries). I only drink a detox smoothie with all those ingredients now and then, but I rarely miss a day taking spirulina. Make sure it is Hawaiian, because other types may not have been thoroughly tested for toxins.

Mushrooms for cancer preventionMushrooms to the Rescue

The Paleo folks are constantly bashing lectins, so I found this quote very interesting. From foodrevolution.org:

But what mushrooms are best known for and researched is their apparent cancer-fighting powers. Mushrooms contain a class of proteins called lectins, which are able to bind to abnormal cells and cancer cells and label the cells for destruction by our immune system. According to a 2016 article published in Molecules:

“Numerous studies have shown that mushrooms help fight breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, uterine cervix cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, and acute leukemia. In addition, antitumor compounds have been identified in various mushrooms species.”

The reason I found this so interesting is that plant-based diets in general have been found to fight cancer. I wonder if it is the lectins found in all plant foods that are responsible. The article doesn’t address that question, but it does have lots of great information about mushrooms, including this:

Mushrooms are packed with nutritional value — they’re low in calories, are great sources of fiber and protein (good for plant-based diets).

They also provide many important nutrients, including B vitamins, selenium, potassium, copper, and (particularly when exposed to the sun) vitamin D.

And even though they’re commonly white, they’re packed with as many antioxidants as more colorful fruits and vegetables.

On top of all that, they are delicious. Eat up!

Splenda - Glyphosate/RoundUp dangersSplenda Dangers

I’m sure my readers already know better than to eat Splenda or other artificial sweeteners, but you might have friends or family who need this information. Pass it on to anyone who still doesn’t know how destructive these chemical concoctions are.

Here are the top five reasons to avoid consuming it.

From greenmedinfo.com:

1. It’s toxic and carcinogenic

2. Increases risks of diabetes and obesity

3. Harms the GI tract

4. Contaminates breast milk

5. Suppresses Thyroid Function, Disrupts Hormones
