sweet cherry blossoms - flower remedyMessage from Bernadette Wulf

Signs of Spring are in the Air!

I’m definitely ready for spring and, lucky for me, the weather is cooperating. I even got out in the garden yesterday and planted some flowers. We often get a little window of Spring here in Sonoma County at this time of year. Then the cold and rains return – if we are lucky. Much as I love the warm weather, we really do need more rain this year. Bring it on!

Seems like so many people around me are getting the flu, or they know someone who has the flu, so I decided to review the very first post I ever wrote for my newsletter. It was all about treating the flu. The idea here is to gather an arsenal of effective remedies before you get sick, so you don’t have to go out when you feel like you are at death’s door. There’s a special article on echinacea, a potent flu fighter, some good news about carrots in the fight against cancer, a short video on treating prostate cancer, and some yummy food suggestions for enhancing your brain.

Jump in and find out how to live a healthier, happier life!

As always, I would love to hear what you want to read about. Feel free to send requests, suggestions, or any sort of feedback. I appreciate hearing from my readers – Email Bernadette

To your health and happiness!

Beat the flu. Prevent colds and fluBeating the Dreaded Flu

When I published my first newsletter back in 2006, it was focused on healing flu symptoms –  http://healitall.com/newslettervol1no1.html. Now it seems we’ve come full circle. Flu is big news again. People have died (including many who had flu shots). Others are flat on their backs for three weeks. It’s a nasty bug this time around.

Here are the recommendations I learned from the Naturopathic course I took back then:

WHAT YOUR HOME MEDICINE CHEST SHOULD ALWAYS INCLUDE
  1. Oscillococcinum (available at most natural food stores)
  2. Thermometer
  3. Aspirin  (Do not give aspirin to children under 13 years of age.)
  4. (Optional) Natural Relief (available at HerbalHealer.com)
  5. Availability of ice
  6. Colloidal Silver 500 ppm (available at HerbalHealer.com)
  7. Olive Leaf Extract – Caps or Liquid (available at HerbalHealer.com)
  8. Sambucol – Elderberry Syrup, Adult and Children (available at HerbalHealer.com)
  9. 4-Herb Tea Liquid Concentrate (also known as Essiac) (available at HerbalHealer.com)
  10. Asparagus Extract packets (available at HerbalHealer.com)
Those are all good things to keep on hand, plus I have discovered a few more excellent additions since then:
  1. Sovereign Silver is a more effective form of Colloidal Silver.
  2. Mega doses of Vitamin C – Ester C or Liposomal C are best options. By mega, I mean 1000 mg. per hour until you feel better.
  3. Avoid foods that feed viruses (eggs, dairy, soy, corn, gluten, pork, canola – and of course sugar, junk food and all artificial ingredients).
  4. If you already have a bug Avoid All Food – drink lots of water, fruit or vegetable juices, herbal teas, and vegetable broth. No solid food until you feel better. Your body wants to focus on getting you better, not digesting meals.
  5. Ionic Zinc
  6. Oregano Tea
  7. Echinacea (see next article)
  8. Don’t forget Raw Garlic
  9. Homeopathic Remedies specific to your symptoms (not the diagnosed disease). What works for one person might not work for another. Frequently used remedies for flu symptoms include: Bryonia, Dulcamara, Allium Cepa, Pulsatilla (usually during cold, wet weather), Eupatorium, Gelsemium, Pyrogen, (in warm weather), Arsenicum (for catarrhal conditions), Aconite, Causticum, Hepar Suophuris, Nux Vomica (in cold, dry, windy weather). You can see that there are many alternatives to consider! If you don’t have a homeopathic doctor, you can try using this Homeopathic Remedy Finder. Just plug in your symptoms and let the program suggest which remedies match your symptoms best. If you get the wrong remedy, it will be harmless, but will have little effect

During the 1918-20 flu epidemic the national mortality rate in America was 30%, “while the Homeopathically treated members of the community showed a death rate of under 1%.” (From Homeopathy in Epidemic Diseases, by Dr. Dorothy Shepherd.)

What to Do for Flu

Repeating from my original newsletter: First and foremost, don’t try to suppress flu symptoms! If you already have the flu, your body is activating certain reactions to help you combat it. Diarrhea is great! It is your body’s way of getting rid of the infection. This is a good reaction, but if you get severe diarrhea make sure you are drinking lots of fluids with added Colloidal Minerals (available at HerbalHealer.com) so you don’t get dehydrated and mineral depleted.

Never allow constipation. Not everyone gets diarrhea. Some types of cold or flu infections cause constipation. Constipation is the number one reason that people stay sick. Get relief with Ayurvedic Triphala, available from Planetary Formulas. Triphala is not a laxative. It heals the bowels and is okay for long-term use.

Fever is also a good reaction. Your body is heating up to combat the invading virus or infection. Keep a thermometer in the house at all times. Get in the habit of taking temperatures. If the temperature is under 100 then let it be. If it starts moving over 100 then you may need to take some aspirin. (Real aspirin, not Tylenol or one of those other pain relievers. NOTE – Do not give Aspirin to children under 13 years of age.) Never let the body temperature get really high. Very high fevers especially in children can cause permanent brain damage.  Monitor temperature every hour. Take a cool bath until the temperature stabilizes under 100.

If you give your body the right tools, it can heal itself.

Echinacea flu prevention and healing8 Benefits of Echinacea

Echinacea is one of the most thoroughly studied herbs in history. Here are some of the amazing things it can do. Excerpted from greenmedinfo.com:

1. Common Cold – Extracts of echinacea are widely used in many countries to prevent or treat the common cold.  In Germany alone, there are more than 200 different echinacea products on the market.  A review of 16 trials by the respected Cochrane Collaboration found that echinacea products can probably help prevent and treat the common cold. [ ]

2. Influenza – [ ] In the trial, 473 patients with early influenza symptoms were given either oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or the echinacea formulation.  Results showed that echinacea was just as effective as the flu drug but had far fewer complications or adverse events.

3. Boosts Immunity – [ ] researchers from the University of California Irvine Medical Center found that extracts of echinacea helped stimulate immune function in cells taken from normal individuals and from patients with either chronic fatigue syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

4. Eye Infections – [ ] Uveitis (inflammation of the middle level of the eye) was resolved in 28 out of 32 patients taking echinacea.  In addition, the echinacea group reduced steroid use by about 70 percent more than the control group.

5. Supports Red Blood Cells – [ ] Blood samples taken during the 28 day trial showed that the echinacea group had up to a 63 percent greater level of erythropoietin (EPO).  EPO is a hormone that promotes the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow.

6.  Reduces Wrinkles – Researchers in Thailand tested topical cream and gel containing echinacea on 10 healthy volunteers, aged 25-40 years. After one month measures of skin hydration increased significantly.  Topical echinacea reduced wrinkles by up to 14.92 percent.

7. Protects Against Radiation Damage – [ ] The researchers concluded that echinacea may be beneficial for the prevention of adverse health effects in workers exposed to radiation.

8. Reduces Chemo Side Effects – [ ] Researchers suggested the echinacea treatment may be effective in reducing chemotherapy-induced leucopenia (low white blood cell count).

Echinacea is available in extracts, tinctures, tablets, capsules, and ointments. It can be found in health food stores and on the internet.

Carrots Fight Cancer - Healthy carbsCarrots Fight Cancer

I haven’t seen too many studies where eating a vegetable can decrease any sort of cancer risk by 47%. That’s pretty amazing – and they only ate a few carrots a week. Here’s what naturalhealth365.com reports:

The most impressive results came from a Lithuanian study, in which roughly 1,100 participants ate between one and six carrots a week. The result was a dramatic 47 percent decrease in the occurrence of stomach cancer. Again, if these results were from a pharmaceutical drug – it would be reported on every mainstream media outlet.

Why haven’t we heard more about this? Follow the money. Carrots are cheap. Not much money to be made there, so why advertise? Fortunately, we have good reporters who track this stuff and share it with us.

Even an 18% drop in prostate cancer risk is pretty impressive:

Prostate cancer, the third leading cause of cancer death in adult male Americans, currently affects over 161,000 men in the United States. In one encouraging meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that eating carrots reduced risk of prostate cancer by 18 percent.

I don’t know about you, but it sure makes me want to eat more carrots. In the study, they used raw carrots. I wonder if cooked carrots would have the same effect. We’ll have to wait for another study to answer that.

Brain Food - Laughter HealsFeed Your Brain

We all want to keep our brains as healthy as possible, especially as we age. Here are 5 foods that will help you do just that. Excerpted from vegetariantimes.com:

  1. Chia Seeds The reason why walnuts are so renowned as a brain food is thanks to their rich omega-3 fatty acid content, which is linked to helping enhance memory as well as protection against cognitive decline. While walnuts are good, chia seeds are even better. [ ] Or to mix things up, you can also use another omega powerhouse, too: hemp seeds!
  2. Goji Berries Considering the number of antioxidants in these remarkable berries, regularly consuming goji’s is, quite literally, a smart habit.
  3. Blueberries High amounts of flavonoid antioxidants are responsible for blueberry’s brain-enhancing fame, which studies have shown enhances memory as well as learning and general cognitive function. [According to Medical Medium, Anthony William, wild Maine Blueberries are best. – Ed.]
  4. Pumpkin Seeds These tasty green seeds are one of nature’s best sources of zinc, a vitamin linked to enhancing memory and thinking skills.
  5. Cranberries One of cranberries many unique rewards is a high concentration of ursolic acid, a compound that has shown promise in protecting brain cells from injury and degeneration, and possibly even reversing damage.

Of course, avoiding toxic pesticides, heavy metals, too much fat/oil, and artificial ingredients will also go a long way toward protecting your brain.
