happy halloween Message from Bernadette Wulf
-
Greetings!

Autumn is here and it's my favorite time of year. The weather comes alive as crisp mornings give way to warm afternoons. The smell of leafy compost adds a rich fragrance to the air. Pumpkins pile up outside of grocery stores. The great fall harvest is underway here in Sonoma County with trucks full of grapes and apples frequenting the roadways. And best of all, we get to dress up in outlandish costumes for Halloween and let out our wild side without being hauled off to the nut house.

By the way, pumpkins and their seeds are very nutritious. Did you know? Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc (helpful for acne and prostate issues) and the flesh is chock full of Beta Carotene and other essential nutrients. Chow down on pumpkin pie, Thai pumpkin curry (totally yummy), and soaked pumpkin seeds tossed in a bit of tamari (dehydrate them if you want to save them for later).

This month we will take a look at the wonders of forbidden rice, food oxidation and body types, magnetic stroke treatments, recipes to make your own healthy shampoos, acne relief, vaccine dangers, and lots more. I'm sure you will find something you didn't know before, and maybe it will even be your key to better health.

To Your Health!

black rice antioidants Black Rice Rivals Blueberries for Antioxidant Power

Have you ever tried "forbidden rice?" It is a very dark blue that looks almost black and it is packed with antioxidants, according to recent studies. It was so coveted in China at one point that only the nobles were allowed to eat it. Fortunately, it is now freely available to us "common folk." It has a nice, nutty flavor and it makes a striking visual addition to any dinner plate.

NaturalNews - "...a spoonful of black rice bran contains more health promoting anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, plus the rice bran has less sugar, more fiber and an abundance of vitamin E."

I haven't seen the rice bran sold separately, but I'm sure it is available out there somewhere. Personally, I prefer eating whole foods whenever possible, so I will just enjoy my black rice like any other rice. It is cooked in the same way as brown rice, so it is easy to substitute it in any meal. Try it sometime.

metabolic types Metabolic Type - How Fast Do You Oxidize Your Food?
-
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to thrive on a high carb/low protein diet, while others thrive on lots of fat and protein without eating many fruits or vegetables? Apparently, it is all about how fast we oxidize our food, which is closely related to our ancestry.

NaturalNews - "According to Wolcott, most people can be classified according to three basic groups:
1. Fast oxidizers
2. Slow oxidizers
3. Balanced oxidizers"

Eskimo's, who tend to be fast oxidizers, can stay healthy on a high fat diet based on fish and meat, while people from tropical or sub-tropical climates (slow oxidizers) tend to need lots of fruits and vegetables to maintain health. Now that people are moving all over the world, it becomes a bit more challenging to know what your ideal diet should be. An Eskimo living in Hawaii would probably still have to eat a lot of protein and fat, but, because of the warmer climate, might have to eat a lot more fruit than an Eskimo living in the arctic.

One result of people moving around a lot is that many people now have mixed ancestry. A person could be half Eskimo and half native Hawaiian. How would that effect their oxidation rate? Would they automatically become a mixed oxidizer, or would they tend to fall at one extreme or the other? These are questions that people will have to answer for themselves by paying attention to how they feel after eating.

How do you feel two hours after eating a high-protein or high-fat meal? Do you feel better or worse after eating a high carbohydrate meal? Pay attention and you will begin to notice how your body handles these different foods. If you know your ancestral heritage, find out what your ancestors ate. You will probably thrive best when you eat a similar diet.

Of course, what we now think of as Chinese food, or English restaurant food, or any other ethnic cuisine, may be far different from the way most people ate in their native cultures. The common people often ate lots of fresh, wild herbs and raw fruits in season. Rather than white rice, most Chinese ate millet or brown rice. Some people, as in large parts of India, ate dairy products, but no other animal products. Other populations, as in Africa, ate little or no dairy and their descendants do not have the ability to digest dairy.

Think in terms of what would have been available to the common farmers and village people. Most peasants ate very little meat or dairy, because they could not afford to feed large animals. Some ate no eggs, but lots of fish if they happened to live near water. Some cultures ate huge amounts of coconut and fruit, along with fish and vegetables.

I have not heard of any totally vegan populations, though it is possible that there were pockets of vegans that survived for long periods. I have heard of a few totally raw food cultures, but most people seem to have eaten at least some cooked food.

The one factor that prevailed throughout the diets of the world was whole foods. No matter what people ate, they almost always used the whole, unrefined food right from the source. So, no matter what your metabolic type, you will always do well to avoid refined and processed foods.

magnetic stroke treatment Magnetic Stimulation Helps Stroke Victims
-
Having watched my grandmother live with the devastating results of a stroke, I am always interested in new therapies to treat this incapacitating condition. This NaturalNews article on magnetic stimulation of the brain really caught my eye.

NaturalNews - "One group of 20 participants received repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in 5-Hz doses on the side of the brain affected by the stroke, the second group received rTMS in 1-Hz doses on the unaffected side of the brain, and the third group received placebo treatments. All groups underwent the same physical therapy regimen.

"At the completion of the study, the first two groups experienced significant improvement in motor skills while the control group experienced no improvement."

This sounds promising. Perhaps in combination with music, tai chi, and working in front of a mirror as discussed in previous articles, the damage of strokes may become much less debilitating.

Shampoo is generally one of the most toxic products we put on our skin, and skin absorbs these toxins right into the bloodstream! Here's something you can do to protect yourself.

I've always been something of a do-it-yourselfer, and I like to try making things from scratch (I guess that's where my kids got the trait), especially when similar commercial products are so often toxic. Why not try making your own totally pure and natural shampoo? It is simple and easy. The only drawback is that you have to shake well before using, because the soap and oils will separate, but that's a small price to pay for avoiding toxins.

NaturalNews offers some great recipes for basic shampoo, oily hair, dry hair, and itchy scalp, as well as for enhancing blond or dark hair. I bet there are good herbs you could add to enhance red hair, too.

NaturalNews - "Basic Shampoo Recipe
Ingredients:
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner's)
1/2 teaspoon sunflower or other light vegetable oil
Directions:
Mix the ingredients, store in a bottle and use as shampoo."

natural acne treatment Natural Treatments to Heal Acne

Here's an article I wish I could have read when I was a teenager. Acne plagues 95% of teens to some degree, but modern medical treatments often cause more harm than good - like inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn’s disease. Not a good trade off!

Rather than using antibiotic drugs or hormone treatments that can throw off the natural hormone regulation of the body, why not try healing from within? From Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman's blog - "Pay attention to zinc, which has cell-regenerating, healing properties in treating acne. Avoid foods—chocolate, cocoa, wheat germ, yeast, regular tea (in bags), coffee, soy, and some seeds and nuts—that increase your levels of copper, which is an antagonist to zinc."

Other foods that can trigger acne outbreaks are "...high-glycemic carbs, dairy, and certain fats (especially those found in processed snacks, pork, and fried foods)."

Of course, sugar is a big no no, because it tends to strip minerals from the body and encourage the growth of bacteria that can live on the skin.

winter heart attack risk Heart Attack Risk May Increase In Winter
-
According to Dr. Mercola's newsletter - "Cold weather may increase your risk of a heart attack, according to new research from the UK. Each 1.8 degree Fahrenheit reduction in temperature on a single day was linked to about 200 additional heart attacks."

Don't become one of these statistics. If you have heart issues, or even if you don't, you may want to pay more attention to taking care of your heart during the winter season. Make sure you keep your Vitamin D3 levels in the high-normal range, keep your magnesium at optimal levels, bundle up to keep your body warm if you go outdoors, and avoid adding stress from unusual exertion (like shoveling snow when you have been a couch potato all summer).

12 false medical beliefs 12 False Medical Beliefs Most Doctors Promote
-
Here are the twelve false beliefs that many doctors promote - from Dr. Mercola's newsletter. (Dr. Mercola calls them "myths," but I personally believe that myths are actually truths in story form. so I won't use that word.) Dr. Mercola offers his opinions after each point listed. You can read them by clicking on the link below. I have added my own comments here in a couple of cases where I don't totally agree.

1: False - Cardio is One of the Best Types of Exercise
2: False - Vaccines are Safe and Effective and Prevent Disease
3: False - Fluoride in Your Water Lowers Your Risk of Cavities
4: False - GMOs Crops are Safe, Well Tested and Economically Beneficial
5: False - Sun Causes Skin Cancer
My comment - partly false. Apparently, it is the action of the sun on toxins in the skin when there is not enough Vitamin A, D, and E to provide protection.
6: False - Saturated Fat Causes Heart Disease
7: False - Artificial Sweeteners are Safe, Well Tested and Help Promote Weight Loss
8: False - Soy is a Health Food
My comment - fermented soy in small amounts has a good rep.
9: False - Whole Grains are Good for Everyone
My comment - note the word "everyone."
10: False - All Plant Based Supplements are as Good as Animal Supplements
My comment - when you use the word "all" there is always room for argument. There are always plant-based alternatives for any animal-based supplement. Contrary to what Dr. Mercola says here, EPA and DHA are available from marine algae like chlorella (and some sources say spirulina) and that is where the fish get it. So vegans don't have to change their diet in order to say healthy. They just have to be more informed and vigilant about how they eat.
11: False - Milk Does Your Body Good
My comment - Dr. Mercola argues that raw milk is actually good, even though pasturized milk is not. This may be true for some people, but many people do not digest any kind of milk very well and I would not recommend consuming large amounts of even the best type of milk, even for those who can digest it.
12: False - Low-Fat Diets are Healthy

Other than the two comments I added, I totally agree with Dr. Mercola's recommendations here and I encourage you to read the article to find out more.

The title of this article pretty much says it all. If you are considering vaccinations for yourself, your children, or your pets, please read Dr. Mercola's excellent article on the subject. All vaccines are NOT safe. Many are experimental. Do you want to be a human guinea pig?

Be informed and don't let government or medical institutions bully you into conforming with their sometimes outdated ideas about your health. You have the right to know and the right to choose.
