Greetings!

I have to admit, I'm having a hard time concentrating as I write this newsletter while listening to Pete Seger's star-studded 90th birthday celebration on the local public television channel. I keep wanting to jump up to see who's singing now! What an amazing life that guy has lived, and he's still going strong.

I've been buzzing around the west coast for the past week - up to Washington state to deliver my little nanny charges and down to Santa Cruz for Mom's 81st birthday.

It is great seeing people in their eighties and nineties celebrating birthdays with friends and loved ones. It gives me hope that more and more people will learn to take better care of themselves so they live to a healthy old age.

It is also the holiday of Lughnasa, or Midsummer, when we celebrate the first harvest and give thanks for the bounty of Earth. I hope you are all enjoying the fruits of summer and the long light and warmth of the season. There is so much to be thankful for!

To Your Health!

Inflammation - Source of Disease and Aging
-
More and more lately, I have been running into studies that point to inflammation as the source of our ills. Inflammation is caused by toxins building up in the body, caused by lack of exercise and poor food choices, not to mention stress and negative feelings.

From NaturalNews, "...many anti-aging experts believe that inflammation is the greatest cause of premature aging, so preventing it is also vital for looking young. Increasing exercise is one key to decreasing systemic inflammation, and the other key is to consume a diet that does not promote inflammation.

"Diet is just as, if not more, important than exercise when working to decrease inflammation. The typical American diet is pro-inflammatory. Sugar, refined flour, and trans fats make up a large percentage of many diets. As a result people are eating foods low in nutrients but high in calories and fat. The result is a chronic state of inflammation. Examples of foods that promote inflammation are refined grains, candy, soda, sugary cereals, processed meats, and high fat meats."

"An anti-inflammatory diet is one that is low in processed foods and high in fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, sprouts, nuts and super foods. Stick to the outside edges of the grocery store where the whole, unprocessed foods tend to be when shopping. Examples of foods that are anti-inflammatory are salmon, olive oil, fruits and vegetables, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds."

Cherries are also known to be anti-inflammatory. That's why I chose them to illustrate this article. Inflammation is more than just arthritis or sore muscles. It can happen anywhere in the body, causing a multitude of problems, such as allergies, sleep disturbances, heart disease, digestive upsets, and even cancer. Again we come back to the same conclusion. Eat lots of fresh, whole foods, relax and enjoy life, and avoid processed foods, and you will be a whole lot healthier!

-
"Blueberries dramatically slow impairments in motor coordination and memory that are the usual accompaniments of aging. What's more, they may help lower blood cholesterol and promote urinary health. Bilberries, a close European cousin of the blueberry, have been shown to promote eye health and protect against glaucoma and cataract progression.
- The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why by Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S."

That is just one of many fascinating quotes about blueberries included in a NaturalNews article titled "Blueberries Lower High Cholesterol and Boost Cardiovascular Health." It seems that blueberries have a lot to offer aside from their delicious flavor. Check out the link below to read more.

Diabetes and Vitamin C

I thought this was really interesting. Recent studies have shown that combining insulin therapy with vitamin C is more effective for most diabetics than using either substance alone. It sounds like a very positive step forward in treating this debilitating disease!

From NaturalNews, "Researchers at the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center in Oklahoma and the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, UK, recruited forty participants into a trial that involved providing vitamin C or insulin therapy, or both, for a range of time periods and assessing the effect of each therapy on endothelial (blood vessel) injury, blood flow and oxidative stress. The patient group included a range of sufferers, from those recently diagnosed with the condition to those who had been controlling the illness for five years or more.

"Results revealed that either therapy was mildly effective for those with a recent diagnosis of Type I diabetes, but that only the combined treatment was completely effective, particularly for longer-suffering participants."

Real Dangers of Genetically Modified Foods
-
Last but by no means least, an article on the dangers of genetically modified organisms in our food. Right from the start I found the whole idea of messing around with the genetic structure of food to be a potential disaster. Now the scientific studies are backing up my original intuition about it. I keep saying it. Buy organic. Eat organic. Feed organic to your kids. Feed organic to your pets. The price you pay for agribusiness products is getting higher and higher every day.

From Health Freedom Alliance, "Worst finding of all—GMOs remain inside of us -[!]

The only published human feeding study revealed what may be the most dangerous problem from GM foods. The gene inserted into GM soy transfers into the DNA of bacteria living inside our intestines and continues to function. This means that long after we stop eating GMOs, we may still have potentially harmful GM proteins produced continuously inside of us. Put more plainly, eating a corn chip produced from Bt corn might transform our intestinal bacteria into living pesticide factories, possibly for the rest of our lives.

"When evidence of gene transfer is reported at medical conferences around the US, doctors often respond by citing the huge increase of gastrointestinal problems among their patients over the last decade. GM foods might be colonizing the gut flora of North Americans."

Yikes! That sounds really creepy. There is a lot more information in the article that will convince you to stay away from GMOs, and the only way to do that is to grow your own food, or buy organic from trustworthy sources. GMOs are creeping into more and more crops, particularly corn and soy which are made into corn syrup, corn starch, processed proteins, and soy oil. Now they have GMO rice and wheat, and they are working on lots of others.

Keep your eyes open!
