Greetings!
By the time this newsletter goes out, I hope all the fires that are
filling the air around here with (very unhealthy!) smoke are put out -
and in other parts of the country, all the rains (that we could really
use here) stop flooding people out of their homes.
Are we starting to get the picture yet? Nature is not happy. The
elements are making a statement in the only way they can. In the last
few years we have had more "natural disasters" than ever in the history
of insurance records. I don't think it is any coincidence that these
things are happening while we, as a culture, have been getting more and
more cut off from nature.
Call me crazy if you like, but I would suggest that nature is alive
and sentient. She knows exactly how we feel about her, and she isn't
going to idly sit by and let us destroy our planet. We humans,
brilliant as we are, may indeed be a dispensable part of nature. And if
we don't shape up, nature may just continue to burn and flood and quake
and blow until we're "back to the stone age," as our charming president
likes to put it.
Just something to think about.
Meanwhile, life goes on. We still have to cure our skin cancers,
find health care products that don't rip off the planet, other people,
or our bodies, and keep our brains clear of gunk so we don't get
Alzheimer's Disease in our old age - or before. Read on for all the
exciting news on those subjects. Hope springs eternal!

Dr.
Bronner's Goes Orgainc and Fair Trade! -
If you lived through the "Sixties" you probably remember Dr.
Bronner's Peppermint Soap. It was one of the first natural body care
products found in the newly emerging health food stores and co-ops that
every good hippie frequented. Now Dr. Bronner's is even bigger and
better, with a whole new line of excellent products.
Personally, I never knew much about Dr. Bronner himself except that
he must have been a very eccentric fellow, judging from the "All One"
propaganda plastered all over his soap labels. Not that I disagreed
with his basic philosophy, but it just seemed strange to have so much
WRITING on a soap label! Strange as the labels were, the products
inside were some of the best available.
Long after my hippie days, when I was working in a little natural
food store in Weed, California, who should walk in to the store but Dr.
Bronner's son! He was quite an entertaining and humble guy who liked to
stop in at small stores to give out free samples and see how their
products were selling. He told us how their company supported several
children's homes and there happened to be one in our area that he was
visiting. I was impressed.
Here was a guy from a hugely successful business who would not only
give a substantial portion of company profits to charity, but would
actually go and visit the children in the homes supported by his
business! In addition, he has now carried his father's "All One"
philosophy into the practical realm of action by creating a totally
organic, fair trade product line of high-quality body care products.
This is a company that cares about your health, the health of our
planet, and the treatment of each person involved in creating their
products, from the farmers on up. I particularly love their Lavender
Coconut Organic Lotion (and all their lotions for that matter). This is
one of the few truly safe and natural hand and body lotions available.
I know, because I used to work in the Health and Body Care department
of a natural food store chain and I spent a lot of my time reading
labels!

Speaking of truly safe and natural body care products - do you ever
wonder about all those long names on the ingredient lists of your
personal care items? Finally there is an easy way you can find out what
they mean and how safe they are.
The Skin Deep website offers a quick evaluation of name-brand
product lines, individual products, and ingredient listings. Just plug
in the name of a product, ingredient, or even a general category in the
search bar and you'll get a fascinating, and sometimes surprising,
report on just how safe or toxic your favorite body-care products might
be. It doesn't include everything out there, but it will give you a
really good idea about which companies to trust - or not!
Try typing in "toothpaste" for a revealing look at what you are
putting in your mouth twice a day. Have you ever heard of sub-lingual
vitamins? They are designed to be absorbed in the mouth, because the
tissues of the mouth can pass them directly into the bloodstream. The
same thing happens with whatever is in your toothpaste. Something to
think about!
Your skin also absorbs vitamins, minerals, and chemicals, so it is
just as important to watch what you put on your body as what you put in
it. Bookmark this website for evaluating all your body-care products.
Your liver and kidneys will thank you.

Causes
and Cures of Alzheimer's -
Here's a startling quote from the Longevity Medicine Review website -

"In a statement made in 2003, past president of the
Alzheimer’s
Association, Sheldon Goldberg warned, 'We have 10 years, at most, to
prevent disaster. If we miss that chance, Alzheimer's will bankrupt
family, state, and federal budgets as up to 14 million baby boomers
succumb to the disease.' Is Goldberg an unrealistic predictor of
doomsday? The most recent data suggests he may not be far off the mark.
"Statistics in a March 2008 review in Biomedicine &
Pharmacotherapy and in the 2008 report from the Alzheimer's Foundation
indicate:
"* AD currently afflicts 5.2 million or 1 in 8 individuals.
* Every 71 seconds, another American develops AD; by 2050, this rate
will escalate to a new case of AD every 33 seconds."
What can we do to stem the tide of dementia in baby boomers before
it's too late? Read on. The following is a very short quote from a long
and scholarly review of the subject. See link at bottom of this article

"This article will review current research on AD etiology,
progression and available pharmaceutical options, which remain
ineffective in AD prevention or treatment, and will then discuss the
peer-reviewed research on promising nutraceutical agents including

A
Real Cure for Skin Cancer -
That's right, I said "cure," and that is a word the medical
establishment won't let anybody use, especially in the same sentence as
the word "cancer," without a whole lot of scientific evidence to back
it up. Skin cancers and pre-cancerous conditions have been fairly
common in my family. Irish skin and California sun just don't coexist
very well. But fortunately there is now a cure that works 100% of the
time in a twelve week treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers. What's
more, it doesn't even leave a scar!
It's made from eggplant! Imagine that. All this time it seemed like
such a strange vegetable, but all the while it was hiding a cure for
cancer inside its shiny, purple skin. This amazing product is called
Curaderm BEC5, and I've included a few links to sites where you can
order it at the end of this article.
"What is Curaderm BEC5? - Curaderm BEC5 is a topical cream
formulation containing a mixture of solasodine glycosides, active
phytochemicals extracted from eggplant that selectively kill cancer
cells without harming normal cells."
If you have any question about whether you or a friend may have a
skin cancer or pre-cancerous condition, please see a dermatologist and
present him or her with this information. For your own reference I have
included descriptions here of the various kinds of skin cancer you may
encounter.

"Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Primer
"Actinic keratoses (AKs) - those small, crusty, rough, typically
reddened patches—the result of prolonged exposure to
sunlight—are not
cancerous, but are a warning sign of potential skin cancer. In addition
to being unsightly, if untreated, these abnormal skin growths on the
skin’s top layer can invade deeper structures and evolve into
malignant
skin cancers. In the U.S., destruction of AKs is the single most
commonly performed dermatologic procedure in the outpatient setting.
"Basal cell carcinoma - cancer occurring in the basal cells (the
cells that line the deepest layer of the skin’s outermost
layer or
epidermis), is the most common form of cancer. Easy to treat when
caught early, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is very unlikely to
metastasize, although—until the development of Curaderm
BEC5—treatment
often caused scarring and disfigurement. BCC sometimes resembles
psoriasis or eczema, typically appearing as a persistent open sore that
doesn’t heal, a reddish patch, shiny mole-like or pink bump,
or whitish
scar-like area.
"Squamous cell carcinoma - occurs in the cells that compose most of
the epidermis. The second most common form of skin cancer, SCC appears
in over 200,000 individuals in the U.S. annually, causing about 1,900
deaths each year. SCC may look like a wart that crusts and occasionally
bleeds; a persistent, scaly red patch with irregular borders that
sometimes crusts or bleeds; or an open non-healing sore that bleeds and
crusts.
"[The book] 'The Eggplant Cancer Cure' provides photographs that
clearly illustrate each of these different variations in the appearance
of actinic keratoses, basal and squamous cell carcinomas.
"Melanoma - the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is a malignant
tumor that originates in the melanocytes, the cells that produce the
pigment melanin, which colors our skin, hair, and eyes. The majority of
melanomas are black or brown, although some are skin-colored, pink,
red, purple, blue or white. If recognized and treated early, melanoma
is nearly 100% curable, but if not, can metastasize. Asymmetrical moles
that are different shades of brown, tan or black and have uneven
borders should be checked by your physician immediately. Fortunately,
melanomas are much less common than basal or squamous cell carcinomas.
Approximately 60,000 new cases of melanoma are identified annually,
resulting in about 8,000 deaths. Early detection and surgical removal
are the treatment of choice; Curaderm is not an effective treatment for
melanoma."

handle melanomas!
