Greetings!
Spring is in the air, here in Sonoma County. Trees are blossoming, and the first balmy breezes of the year are gracing us with a taste of the coming season.

First of all, I want to share a YouTube link to a fascinating film clip about a machine that produces enough free, clean energy to run a house indefinitely. I'm sure you are aware that energy production is a big factor in the health of our planet, which of course affects the health of all of us. It is exciting to know that some inventors are following in the footsteps of Tesla, and that we may soon have a "green" solution to meet the rising demand for energy. Here's the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efCelx7qe_M

In my last newsletter I included an article recommending L-arginine. My brother has since reminded me that there are some websites promoting massive doses of L-arginine as Viagra substitutes. As with all supplements, massive doses of any nutrient can upset the delicate balance of blood and/or brain chemistry and that is NOT what the SmartHealth article (nor I) recommend. The idea is to take a lower-dosage on a regular basis to improve overall circulation.

Though single amino acids are often recommended for improving certain ailments, it is always best to eat an abundance of whole foods that include a natural balance of amino acids, as well as other nutrients. Whenever one nutrient is singled out, it is only to be used temporarily to replace a deficiency.

This month we will take a look at a scientific study showing how important it is to eat organically-grown foods whenever possible. We already knew that, but it's nice when studies back us up!

Next, an article outlining a "do-able" exercise schedule, plus use of a clever weighted vest that almost effortlessly builds strength and burns calories without adding time to your workout.

And finally, a few common sense tips for living to a healthy old age.

To Your Health!

Eat Organic! - Pesticides from Food Found in Children
-

I often hear questions about whether eating organically grown foods really makes a difference. The following article provides the answer. Aside from its negative effects on planetary ecosystems, so called "conventional agriculture" leaves measurable traces of pesticides in the bodies of those who consume them.

Organic Consumers Association article:
"The peer-reviewed study found that the urine and saliva of children eating a variety of conventional foods from area groceries contained biological markers of organophosphates, the family of pesticides spawned by the creation of nerve gas agents in World War II.

"When the same children ate organic fruits, vegetables and juices, signs of pesticides were not found.

"The transformation is extremely rapid," said Chensheng Lu, the principal author of the study published online in the current issue of Environmental Health Perspectives.
'Once you switch from conventional food to organic, the pesticides (malathion and chlorpyrifos) that we can measure in the urine disappears. The level returns immediately when you go back to the conventional diets,' said Lu, a professor at Emory University's School of Public Health and a leading authority on pesticides and children.

"Within eight to 36 hours of the children switching to organic food, the pesticides were no longer detected in the testing."

Here are a couple of great tips for staying in shape and/or losing weight from a recent article by Debbie Rocker, former professional athlete, World Record holder in cross-country cycling, and trainer to some of Hollywood's best known celebrities. The weighted vest sounds like a great idea to me. No machines or dumbbells lying around. No trips to the gym. Just walk out your door. That's my kind of exercise. You could even dance in the vest!

Excerpt from Yahoo! article:
* "Nobody wants to exercise more - and we don’t want to train our bodies to need more exercise to stay fit. So exercise efficiently – two short, very intense (relative to your level of fitness) training sessions weekly, like a 15-minute fast run/walk or fast cycling sprint intervals, and two moderately long, moderately intense sessions (30-45 minutes) of strong walking, cycling, or yoga, with one long day (60-90 minutes) of a moderately paced walk/hike. That’s a great five-day/week training schedule."

* "Instead of adding more days to your workout schedule, add a weighted vest to your training. I have said this before, but this is the most efficient way that I know of to build muscle while burning calories. For more information, go to http://www.walkvest.com/."

Reaching 100 is Easier than Suspected

Once again, scientific studies support what we already knew. Stay active, don't smoke, keep your weight under control, and (big surprise) avoid getting diabetes and high blood pressure, and you are likely to live to a healthy old age. In the following CBS article, they don't mention how to avoid diabetes and high blood pressure, but regular exercise and avoiding animal products (meat, eggs, and dairy), and refined foods like sugar and white flour, along with that all-important positive attitude, will give you the upper hand.

CBS article excerpt:
"...while genes are important, scientists don't think they tell the whole story about longevity.

"A [recent] study of men in their 70s found that those who avoided smoking, obesity, inactivity, diabetes and high blood pressure greatly improved their chances of living into their 90s. In fact, they had a 54 percent chance of living that long.

"Their survival decreased with each risk factor, and those with all five had only a 4 percent chance of living into their 90s, according to Harvard University researchers.

"Those who managed to avoid lifestyle-related ailments also increased their chances of functioning well physically and mentally two decades later."

"It's not just luck, it's not just genetics. ... It's lifestyle" that seems to make a big difference, said lead author Dr. Laurel Yates of Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

"'It's get your shoes on, get out there, and do some exercise,' she said. 'These are some things you can do' to increase the chances of a long life.

"Yates said it's never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle, though the findings don't address whether waiting until age 70 to stop smoking, lose weight and exercise will increase longevity."
